scissor & thread ramp up the heat with the debut release by virginias deep house don, dj aakmael. known for his infectious grooves and deep and intricate instrumentation for more than two decades, this four track ep is in no short supply of teased out, peak time, classic deep house. the titular track wastes no time on the a-side with its hard hitting kick and springy bass holding court, while a hypnotic serpentine synth snakes along. the a2, what iz deep house, is a lesson for those who dont know what true deep house is. woozy, edgy chords take the spotlight as a dissociated voice slurs, what is deep house? a relentlessly thick kick, along with sharp as razors hi-hats and snaps, throttle the track into peak time territory. on the flip, sands is an aquatic affair, with its reverb laden pads and piano chord stabs submerging the floor in pelagic atmosphere. the persistent, euphoric bassline bump effortlessly slides its hooks into the listeners ears before a celestial piano melody pierces through the depths. frank & tony take things even deeper with their late night breakaway dub, applying their signature bass line touch and hi-hat shuffle in what may be their best remix to date.

having made his label introduction with his remix of label newcomer villete’s “rillia-, darand land gets to spread out and show off his unique brand of euphoric and uplifting deep house on his debut ep for the label, ‘discover you’. the title track is classic darand land, with bright piano chords, buzzing organs and a thick chicago house bass line. siren-like pads fade in and out from the periphery, as electrifying percussion elements come into play. frank & tony take a turn and apply their signature style onto the former track, adding a chunkier kick with bright as day claps and hi-hats to propel the track through the opalescent haze draped over the melodic elements. on the flip, “marcela’s sense” is a blissed out, head down late night affair. cosmic pads swirl around glistening keys and repressed organ chords, as toms bounce among the steady hi-hat ride, lulling the listener into a state of euphoria. the ep closes out with the atmospheric, peak time detroit house cut, “souls awash-. a serpentine bass line runs the show amidst swelling pads and in-your-face kicks and percussion. as with all of his productions, the track shines in the smaller details that float in and out of focus throughout, lending the track’s weightier elements an even greater sense of gravitas.

vinyl exclusive tracks on their third release of 2016, frank & tony streak back onto the scene with one of their most refined efforts yet, ‘harmonia. toms and effervescent drum patterning gets things started nicely on ep opener, seranade. swirling pads, alongside a driving two-note bass, lay the groundwork before siren-like synths call out as an incorporeal voice beckons, bring me all of your dreams, you dreamers. hardrian takes the tempo down, but ramps up the filth, conjuring dark, basement rave vibes with its propelling bass line and cavernous pads. shuffling hi-hats and billowing synths flitter in and out of focus making this one of the duos most hypnotic and psychedelic affairs to date.

fresh off the heels of the success of their ‘waiting ground’ ep, the boys in black, frank & tony, are skating back onto the scene with another four track summer stomper, ‘under the jaguar sun’. the a-side starts things off with the titular track, a rollicking deep house number primed for sunset raves. a bouncing and lush bass line is the back bone of the track, as crisp hi-hats, distant, yearning pads, and shimmering bells propel dancers forward into eyes closed euphoria. things ramp up quickly into peak-time ecstasy on the breakaway edit of solo andata’s “a ballet of hands.” a whirling dervish of delicate music boxes, bowed guitars, delicate music boxes, and distant horns swirl around and weave in and out between a skipping drum pattern, pushing and pulling alongside a gruff and stuttering bass, perfect for those late night rooftop ventures.

the boys are gliding back onto the scene with scissor and threads first release of 2016, waiting ground. the handsome twosome of frankie skates and tony b. real deliver us four prime cuts aimed squarely at the dance floor. the vinyl-exclusive, ebreo, sees the duo flex their afro-rhythmic muscle, placing silky smooth bass over a bed of soft swirling percussion highlighted by a pitched down steel drum. next, an edit first heard on frank & tonys acclaimed resident advisor podcast comes to light. deftly cutting the hushed ambient tones of donato whartons absentia into perfect portions, frank & tony loop brittle bits over a chunky kick and shuffling hi-hat to hypnotic effect. the ep’s title track evokes the sun-kissed euphoria of early hour raves with its lush atmospherics and playfully subdued piano line buoyed by a thick kick and airy pads. finally pavane takes the previous tracks laid back attitude and flips it, adding a thick in-your-face kick and propulsive pads for a foot-stomping, hands in the affair dj weapon.

2015 will prove a benchmark year for scissor and thread with the rising momentum of frank & tony and desert sound colony and now with the introduction after many months of work of their new enigmatic artist, rosas nievas, with a sublime debut ep, every inch of you. like a tip of the hat to herbert, the title track entices with easy piano licks, a cooing vocal and a lush atmospheric enveloping the floor in a warm embrace. flipping the switch, the bounce of opinions propels dancers into hands-up, chicago-style elation, while the rollicking, looping closer, hear me rain, entrances with its early morning psychedelia. completing the package is a breakaway edit from label heads, frank & tony, who transform every inch of you into a sun-drenched, euphoric deep house stormer, in a way only they can do.

following the release of their debut lp, keep up appearances on their new label modelmaker, dan berkson and james what draft in frank & tony, dana ruh, dorisburg and alan doe for remixes. berkson & what have chalked up many releases on poker flat and crosstown rebels over the years whilst most recently turning heads outside of their own modelmaker imprint via singles for dogmatik and seth troxler s play it say it. the duo s lp, released in january, marked a new chapter in their production history and has seen support from josh wink, mr g and skream over the past few months. keep up appearances - remixes opens with anthony collins and francis harris superb frank & tony alias taking on seraphim which results in a tense but understated piece of layered, classic sounding house music while dana ruh, fresh from her excellent debut lp on underground quality last year, drops an eerie recreation of worship that draws on spacey synths and unsettling ambience. dorisburg, known for outstanding material on sweden s aniara amongst others, continues a sterling run of form with a rendition of feel free which employs soaring chords to fashion a luscious and elevating take on the original. rounding off the package is berlin producer alan doe, an artist who debuted on rue de plaisance in 2014. doe s worship remix is squarely dancefloor-aimed with punchy kicks, smokey effects and teasing keys
