After the enthusiastic feedback to his last album, Static Phase, lotech/hijack, is back with us again for another album's worth of sublime dub techno. Winter Constellations is Greyscale's 36th full length in total. The Canadian artist says that he is very fond of star gazing and has always been excited by the vastness of space. In Canada, winter is the best time of the year for viewing the night skies. The impact of that hobby is felt within his music like 'Celestial Rotation' which also gives us a similar excitement. There are spacey sounds that shoot around the track giving us visuals of a very active star constellation. The title track has a unique chord makeup that ebb and flow around a pristine and angelic background. Many of these tracks will distract you with how fantastic the sounds and movements are that you will lose focus on how good the rhythms and grooves are. The powerful builder 'Let's Forget Who We Are', is an unforgettable ride through interstellar space. Speaking of space, how about the depth and anticipation in 'Auriga'?! It sounds as if electrostatic pulses are escaping a black hole. There are some frequencies here that we didn't think our speakers could replicate. We especially like the bass grooves in over the very light airy atmosphere in 'Night Sky Dreaming' and 'Horologium'. Winter Constellations is full of shimmering reverberances that ride the ideal balance between enjoyable and deep listening. Often times, you feel that objects are constantly in motion and events are evolving in the cosmos. The feeling of movement and the vastness of space is perfectly captured here to the extent that you feel as though this is a soundtrack and not just an album.
