7 inch singles were instrumental to the development of the jamaican music industry, more affordable than full lengths for the consumer, they also allowed the labels to turnaround what was being recorded into music played from their booming sound systems as quickly as possible. in that spirit, get on down will be reissuing some of the most crucial jamaican sides on 45, staring with the maytals “monkey man.” recorded in 1969, the cut was a smash hit in jamaica and hit number 47 when released in the uk in early 1970. “monkey man” went on to be highly influential on the british two-tone movement of the later 70s with the specials offering up a ripping version of the cut on their 1979 debut. the b side, “night and day”, though not a chart-burner, is certainly one of the most solid rock-steady cuts you’ll ever encounter rife with bubbly keys, tight snares and toots hibbert’s incredibly soulful vocals.

the album was recorded at sunset with the blue mountains providing the stunning backdrop. the gorgeous, sun-kissed acoustic session depicts a soulful and intimate side to revered classics like “funky kingston”, “pressure drop” and “54-46”. the loose rhythms and toots trademark vocal make “unplugged on strawberry hill” the perfect soundtrack for summer.

1969 hatten the maytals mit -monkey man- einen großen reggae-hit. das dazugehörige album ist seit jahrzehnten vergriffen und wird als teure rarität gehandelt. nun - remastered von den originalen analog-masterbändern - wird das werk auf 180g heavyweight vinyl endlich neu aufgelegt. heute kennt man sie vor allem unter dem namen toots and the maytals, aber ursprünglich nannte sich die gesangs-gruppe um frederick -toots- hibbert einfach the maytals. sie begannen ihre musikalische karriere in den 60er jahren und waren prägend für die entwicklung von ska und rock steady. ihre zusammenarbeit mit dem chinesisch-jamaikanischen produzenten leslie kong ende der 60er jahre brachte den internationalen erfolg und in der folge einen plattenvertrag mit island records. einer ihrer größten hits sollte -54 46 that s my number- werden, ein song, in dem frederick -toots- hibbert (der gerne auch als otis redding jamaikas bezeichnet wurde) seine zeit im gefängnis thematisiert. welchen einfluss ihre musik auch jenseits der reggae-kultur genießt, belegt beispielsweise die coverversion von -pressure drop- durch the clash.

toots & the maytals long and storied musical career spans all the way back to the dawn of ska. the group are not only key figures in the development reggae, they were among the first to utilize the word in a song title which lead to the popularization of the very term reggae. among the numerous musical accomplishments of frederick toots hibbert and his group was the song pressure drop , which was released initially in 1970, but received widespread acclaim for its appearance in the soundtrack to the film harder they come. it has since been covered by the clash, the specials, the selecter, robert palmer, and numerous others, has been rated by rolling stone as one of the 500 greatest songs of all time, and is credited with helping introduce reggae music to the world.

hot shots of reggae is an recording on which a bunch of popular reggae songs are brought together. the album was originally released in the autumn of 1970 and compiled by the legendary chinese-jamaican producer leslie kong. he had enjoyed many hits in in europe and selected some of the true pearls from the reggae music to shine on the album. the album includes the maytals hit monkey man, the sparkling so much love by joe white and the fine rythms of ken boothe’s freedom street. the influential producer leslie kong once discovered jimmy cliff and recorded him on his own record label beverley’s. in 1962 he recorded bob marley’s first single and through the 60’s het became known as the producer of many big artists, like desmond dekker and joe higgs. he died of a heart attack, at the age of 38, in august 1971.
