“we are what you think we are” is the tenth dispatch from the crew here at lost soul enterprises, new york city, usa. this compilation features a whopping 15 artists who together represent all corners of the label’s extended family, with frequent local collaborators paired with past guests of our various parties. it is served with love from us to you on 3 slabs of vinyl released in 3 installments.
each installment charts a different component of our sound: 10.1 highlights the influences of synthwave and postpunk electronics, 10.2 is comprised of razor-sharp acid and overdriven electro, and 10.3 delves into darker shades of industrial techno. together, all of these elements loosely sketch our little corner of the sonic universe. with this humble offering we tried to capture and share with you a little sliver of what we’ve found together in hazy rooms full of flashing lights and strange sounds.

this release captures kicks, rhythms, and snares—only to drag them kicking and screaming into a metallic underworld. in j. tijn’s echo-sphere, there are only allusions to the status quo of sound and beats, and never a full-fledged embrace of the conventional. on side a’s “kanon v.i.p.” a grizzly digital war is left to play out between both kick and snare, with grainy battle lines drawn around upbeat and downbeat. survivors of the conflict are rewarded with a groove reminiscent of grime, if only the genre had been reborn in a dystopian future. side b opens with a roughneck beat on “mor” before turning its hand into a fist and effectively destroying its own image. the groove lives through this barrage of sound, but as a heavy and dark undercurrent just strong enough to remind you where j.tijn’s roots are. “shy” lures you in with a rounded electro kick, before glutting the rhythm and ushering in a wall of sound. a snowstorm of screaming drum samples proceed to surround you: you may have been here before, but you are somewhere rhythmically unseen. embedded in all of these tracks are perhaps a sign of the times: the things that used to be seen as normal have now changed and mutated.

“we are what you think we are” is a 3 part compilation celebrating 10 releases from new york-based label and promoters lost soul enterprises. the groupings of artists on each 12” represent slightly different sonic territory, from darkwave and synthpop, to acid and electro, to industrial techno, all of which together have come to define the identity of the label and the community surrounding its legendary parties.

the 7th installment on the brothers label sees a whole new batch of collaborators join the family, along with one previous member from bros003.
