for his second release on the label this year, culprit welcome jozif and his standard rising ep. sharing the formers anticipation and buzz, standard rising is the middle installment in the la-based imprints anthemic summer trilogy. exuberant and profoundly catchy the ep is bursting with fresh ideas that are uniquely jozif and perfectly matched to culprits forward moving sound.

with their 22nd release, culprit unleash their most narratively and sonically rich ep, courtesy ofone of the genres unique young voices, jozif. his lady b ep is a work of intricate conception that goes well beyond typical dance music themes, instead serving up a personally vivid and cohesive story. with these five immaculate tracks, culprit appears closest to fulfilling their mission statement of delivering music cinematic in its scope, true to their los angeles roots.

2010 has been a massive year for jozif, emerging as one of the most talked about artists in house music. the follow-on from the first sell-out edition, “beats in space”, “brick jane” goes further to cement his place as one of the vanguard of the london music scene, and propel fist or finger to the status of a buy-on-sight label. jozif’s title track – the dancefloor focused ‘fist’ of the package – goes in deep, the momentum continuously building as the track twists and turns through a landscape of deep slabs of bass assured deployment of subtle guitar plucks and piano chords, and dreamy xylophones. finally releasing into an epic crescendo, jozif only allows the moment to last just long enough, before all the elements are stripped right back as the journey starts all over again. brick jane draws out a journey, continuing to morph and subtly affix new elements throughout its 7 minutes. the arrangement is simple yet the progression is deft, subtle and effective, creating a vibe that can be employed at any given time of the night, offering a truly different context. craig’s ‘finger’ re-interpretation picks up the thread where his “beats in space” remix left off. crackling static laced with woozy atmospheres and paranoid utterings flip the vibe of the original completely on its head. richards displays a completely unique ability to stretch the original track far beyond its character into a completely different dimension, building a warped soundscape that feels as though it was recorded in a chasm deep deep underground. a mind-bending journey from a truly multi talented artist, in the truest sense of the word

the mole has been burrowing tunnels in electronic music circles for many years. based in montreal, he became known through releases on matthew jonsons wagon repair, collaborations with the label head and a consequential solo album for them. he performs with 5 turntables no less and appeals as much to the lovers of disco as to lo-fi electronica all the way to straight edged house heads and non-conformist jazz lovers.

after a break of 3 years, fear of flying resurrect their limited label to give an airing to a track that has been getting some serious attention at londons uber club fabric, having been a staple in the sets of supa resident craig richards for some months now. tiger tiger is all about the tension as the 3 minute intro builds and builds with the an arpeggiated synth, deep bass and a spanish female vocal hook before dropping, no doubt, to dance floor pandemonium as the kick is introduced. its anthemic qualities are brought to the fore later on with a string breakdown and more lashings of the ultra catchy spanish female vocal. ekkohaus provides two excellent mixes on the flip – the main remix shimmers along in fine dance floor fashion. super slick percussion and snippets of the main vocal keep pushing the tracks along, occasionally dropping into the full vocal hook to get hands in the air and smiles on faces.
