Love Rehab’ spoils us with its trademark Chaim elements and some “Imagination” influence: tricky percussion, multi-layered atmospherics treading the fine line between tension and melodic release, a funk-injected organ riff. ‘Love Rehab’ won’t let itself be reduced to typical floor-filling functionality. Its casually extended song structure and vaguely lascivious vocals from soulful House and Pop singer Meital de Razon take us on a nocturnal journey through the world of clubs, bars, neon signs and back seats of taxis - sometimes right up close, and sometimes observed dreamily through the patterns of fogged up windows.
‘New Years Eve’ makes a more lively start, getting straight down to business with funky percussion and slap-bass samples and leading us down the path to total lunacy. The hook, appearing almost out of nowhere, surely uses the most unlikely chord progression ever to be heard in a club track. Whilst the beat continues straight ahead, the strings and brass could have been lifted straight out of an ultra-cool seventies blaxploitation gangster movie. Slick action, fat cigars - Mr. Shaft sends his regards.
The film really gets going with ‘Locations’: a percussive pattern with a thumping kick, then the syncopated drums roll in - this is worlds away from your average off-beat hi-hat. Spookily disorienting vocal effects, accompanied by a looped mantra with a nursery rhyme feel - Fear and Loathing in Tel Aviv? Is that the carpet I can feel creeping up my leg?
Don’t panic, it was just a dream! The ‘Love Rehab’ dub mix, available on the digital release, makes sure we come down gently. Dub is not meant in the strictest of terms here - it takes a straight house beat for a stroll. The wonderful atmospheric elements and dub-delayed vocal fragments make this track into a gentle relaxation exercise for an early-morning dancefloor.
