From underground stardom, Pete Philly garnered wide acclaim as the vocal half of Pete Philly & Perquisite. With the duo’s debut Mindstate (2005) and sophomore album Mystery Repeats (2007), Pete Philly & Perquisite rose to the top of the European hip-hop scene. Both albums are statements of a growing European hip-hop scene which set itself apart from the lyrical machismo and musical clichés of the dominant forces in US hip-hop. Pete Philly & Perquisite’s genre-crossing approach led to both commercial success and critical acclaim: Mystery Repeats is to date the highest charting hip-hop album in their home country, and was the first ever hip-hop album to claim the highest position in the critics’ poll of acclaimed German music magazine Visions. The band shared stages with Kanye West and the late James Brown, and performed at the main European music festivals.
Pete and his producing partner Perquisite decided to not rest on their laurels and ended their collaboration on the peak of their career in 2009: a final show in their home town Amsterdam which sold out weeks in advance. Perquisite pursued a career writing movie scores and working on new recordings, while Pete explored the route of acting, singing, writing and perfecting his own producing skills. Pete launched an outlet for his musical inspiration last year named Open Loops: a digital mixtape using the latest in design- and social media features. Open Loops has been nominated for the international Webby Awards and the European Design Awards.
Now, nearly two years after the glorious end of Pete Philly & Perquisite, Pete translated his ambitions to a new creative high on his solo debut One. The album was recorded in Pete’s own studio in Amsterdam, allowing only his lifetime friend and musical partner DJ PCM to join in his tour de force:
“On this album, all the questions I wanted to ask at this moment are coming together”, Pete explains. ’One’ is me composing and producing on my own. I am finishing things I hadn’t dealt with yet, and push the boundaries of what I can do lyrically and vocally. ”
Pete and his new band will take to the road for a selection of dates in October and November. The One tour will bring them to venues in cities such as Hamburg, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Vienna and Zurich.
