after more than ten years on the techno scene, hosting vienna’s infamous meat market parties, playing dj gigs in some of the best clubs around the globe and releasing four solo eps on his very own label meat recordings, it is time to take his profile as a producer to the next level. and this is exactly what snacks will do for gerald. besides delivering some of his typical techno bangers (push, waste of good cereal, winning streak, every me) and a breaky roller in the legacy of his hit otto wagner green (fever), he has taken some considerable risk by showing a completely new side of his production in the studio: wash me and sail away are coops with viennese singers, that could quite plausibly be described as pop songs. gay dad offers some rammsteiny vibes along with some provocative, yet sexy lyrics. snacks also features two amazing remixes by christoph faust and projekt gestalten. the double 12” vinyl comes in a precious gatefold cover with a breathtaking 3d rendered artwork by jesus florez (bogota, colombia), which is, in effect, a work of art for itself.

hercules & love affair return to the fray with “controller”, a pulsing, propulsive new song that signals the first salvo from their long-awaited new album. featuring the horrors’ faris badwan on vocals, it takes the hercules’ disco-house heritage and fuses it with starker post-punk stylings. a taster both sonically and aesthetically of the new album, controller connects new wave, post-punk and 80s electro within the clubland realm of hercules & love affair. also featured is tuff city kids italo-disco inspired remix, and mike simonetto homage to early 90’s west coast break-beat house, and then there is the superb dub of the original….what a package! hearing the the horrors’ live version of frankie knuckles & jamie principle’s ‘your love’, andy realised he’d found a rock artist willing to engage with dance culture s history. with its underbelly of seamy ‘80s electro-pop yet recalling early house records by the likes of lil louis and bam bam, “controller”’s sub-dom, master-and-servant roleplay in the lyrics work perfectly with faris vocals delivery creating something truly quiet special
