deluxe colour-in-colour (red & yellow) 180 gram double vinyl in gatefold sleeve, 18x24als die grunge-explosion der frühen 90er jahre seattles flanellbekleidete außenseiter aus den schäbigen clubs der innenstadt in den mainstream beförderte, füllte eine neue generation rastloser künstler die lücke, die in der underground-musikszene des pazifischen nordwestens entstanden war. viele der unter 21-jährigen, die im gefolge von -nevermind- musik machten, schienen noch weniger von den aalglatten produktionswerten, den anspielungen auf den klassischen rock und der testosterongeschwängerten mosh-kultur begeistert zu sein, die mit dem zeitgeist einhergingen. sie bevorzugten ihre eigene art von revolution summer, weg von den populären klängen der Ära und hin zu einem emotional nuancierteren, melodischeren und inklusiveren punk stil. das trio lync aus puget sound in washington hat den geist dieser Ära perfekt eingefangen, indem es das leidenschaftliche chaos der szenen in dc und san diego mit der rauen diy-pop-sensibilität der blühenden indie-community in olympia zu einem einheitlichen sound verschmolz. obwohl sie nur zwei jahre lang eine band waren, trugen sie dazu bei, die nächste Ära des nordwest undergrounds zu definieren, inspirierten zahllose andere künstler und gaben so den anstoß für die entstehung beliebter platten aus jener region. nachdem die einzige lp der band, -these are not fall colors-, über ein jahrzehnt lang vergriffen war, wurde sie nun neu gemastert und zu einer 2xlp erweitert, die um -can t tie yet- - einen compilation-track aus der aufnahmesession des albums - ergänzt wurde. ursprünglich wurde -these are not fall colors- im sommer 94 auf k records veröffentlicht, nur wenige monate bevor die band aufhörte, und ist eine ungestüme sammlung von krawalligen hymnen, die auf zusammengeklebten geräten gespielt werden. angeführt von den schrägen melodien des verstorbenen sängers und gitarristen sam jayne und angetrieben vom treibenden bass von james bertram und dem schlagzeug von david schneider, kanalisieren die elf songs des albums diesen undefinierbaren sound der frühen 90er jahre, bevor deskriptoren wie -post-hardcore- und -emo- zu pejorativen begriffen wurden. sicher, bei songs wie -b- und -silverspoon glasses- bekommt man ein gefühl für den anspruchsvolleren mid-tempo-punk-ansatz, und bei -pennies to save- und -cue cards- kann man vielleicht einen hauch von wehmütigem songwriting erhaschen, aber lync scheinen ihre ideen aus allen möglichen inspirationen, die sie in der grauen düsternis und geografischen abgeschiedenheit des westlichen washingtons finden konnten, aufzusaugen und zu einem ganz eigenen stil zusammenzufügen. trotz des kurzen bestehens von lync, ihrer bescheidenen ambitionen und ihres diy-ansatzes, hatte ihre arbeit eine große wirkung. jayne machte fortan musik unter dem namen love as laughter. doug martsch von built to spill war von dem album so begeistert, dass er bertram und schneider als rhythmusgruppe für die -there s nothing wrong with love--tour engagierte. phil ek, der tontechniker von these are not fall colors, war später an den aufnahmen und produktionen von fleet foxes, band of horses und the shins beteiligt. der frühere bassist isaac brock und -these are not fall colors--artwork gestalter jeremiah green gründeten später modest mouse. bertram und green gründeten später auch die angesehene indie-rock-gruppe red stars theory. manchmal hat man das gefühl, dass man jede beliebige indie-rock-gruppe aus dem nordwesten der 90er und 00er jahre auswählen und ihre dna bis zu lync zurückverfolgen könnte. die deluxe-edition von these are not fall colors wird auf 180g color-in-color vinyl gepresst und in einem gatefold-cover mit bedruckten innenhüllen und erweitertem artwork von jesse ledoux verpackt. die 2xlp enthält außerdem ein 18x24 poster mit ausführlichen liner notes von brian cook. poster included.
