Manchesters Mindset Records celebrates its tenth release, giving a debut 12 inch to rising young producer Stickman to continue a strong tradition of breaking new talent to the world. With a well respected and much loved back catalogue providing a solid foundation to build upon, Mindset again eschew the more conventional option of relying upon big names to sell records. Debut releases on the label for xxxy, Narcossist (now Kowton), Hatti Vatti and label owner Indigo himself have all propelled each artist to their respective standings today and Mindset 010 looks set to do the same for Stickman.
Hailing from rural surroundings between Manchester and Sheffield, Stickman’s productions have steadily been gaining support for some time, culminating in a recent digital release for his track Pressure on Hospital’s sister label Med School Music.
Three tracks for Mindset showcase a producer brimming with innovation and brazen confidence and with a sonic palette unbridled by genre limitations, in true Mindset fashion. The Verge is a frenetic mashup of bass music and techno influences, put together with Stickman’s unmistakable precision and technical dexterity. If You Stay is a 4x4 mover, fusing teutonic stabs with rising subs to a seriously potent end whilst closer Known is more contemplative, with an off kilter beat and ethereal reverbs hauntingly falling away from clipped, cryptic vocal samples.
With his productions seeing support from Indigo, dBridge, Troy Gunner, EHL (Pushing Red), Synkro, Ruckspin and with further releases lined up for 2012, Stickman’s sound is one which looks certain to resonate well beyond Manchester this year.
