the story of the qualitons began in 2007 when dj/producer kanada kaosz decided to put together a funk/soul/afrobeat band. he went to dozens of concerts to hand-pick musicians for this project. this is the way the qualitons were born. the band were named after the living memory of the former hungarian recording company qualiton - a record label which existed from the late 50s up to the 70s.

take a professional dj, vinyl digger and label owner, tobias kirmayer, add a latin/jazz producer, jerker kluge. have them run together a monthly club-night in munich, shake-a-leg. after a few years, ask them to manifest the concept of the party on a compilation. enrich the worldwide funk, soul and jazz community with their research work. does this sound like a formula? yes it does.
after the great success of the first shake-a-leg club-night compilation, the two vinyl addicts come up with an even more exciting selection on this second volume. like on its predecessor, the musical spectrum is quite colorful: from hip hop (mighty mocambos feat. afrika bambaataa) to afro beat (fanga), soul-jazz (willis jackson) to funk (tommy dark), hip hop/jazz hybrids (jacknife lee) to dancefloor jazz (deep jazz). the album showcases an exciting mixture of sounds which represents best the personal taste of the two compilers.

the funk on this compilation is contemporary but the message of funk is as old as humanity itself. funk as tramp records sees it is a vibrant and viable music that was born from a transformative period in american history - the sound of the growing pains of a young country. contemporary funk gathers inspired bands from today whose hearts still beat for funks timeless truth, and connects them with this rich legacy of american music. contemporary funk assembles bands whose hearts beat for the original, raw soul sound they want to keep alive in its original form. the sugarman 3, whose former musicians are now members of the famous dap kings (of sharon jones fame) are included alongside will holland (quantic soul orchestra) and finlands no.1 funk band, the soul investigators (of nicole willis fame) are all to be found here. however, the main focus of the album is on new bands on the scene such as derobert & the half truths, the funk revolution and the ben martin trio. original funk music lives on in the 21rst century and contemporary funk is a great proof of that.
