lisbon’s parai&#769,so is back, bringing us their first artist ep - and it couldn’t come from a realer luminary of the portuguese underground. dj senior vasquez, mostly known as photonz, has been doing the rounds for over a decade, continually championing the early sound of lisbon rave while helping craft some heavily innovative dancefloor ammunition.

heads up! an early 2018 gift from stephan bodzins herzblut as the enigmatic luna semara returns to the label with more of her trademark striking sagas. two tracks rippling with tension and drama, its an earnest statement of evocative intent from both the label and luna alike.

call it future-step. call it deep-step. call it autonomic. call it whatever you wish, but one thing is for sure - hidden element hailing straight from kiev, ukraine fail to make their music disappoint. with a fresh take on electronic sounds ranging from breathtaking beat-less layers to +/- 170 bpm heavy hitters, these two have been making waves in the industry for some time already, releasing on 22:22, alphacut, med school, pinecone moonshine, and translation - to name a few. but it is absys records that is the home for their full-length album entitled “together”.

anton pieete is known for his classic, textured take on house & techno. the dutchman has spent recent years exploring the reaches of his analogue set up, releasing a string of hugely popular eps for joris voorns rejected imprint. now he turns over his latest wares to ovum, with another impressive offering in the shape of themenu. while it may be our starter, first dish peven is definitely more of a main course. heady and intoxicating with itspercussive, funky drums and undulating keys, its carries us on its woozy wave of rich analogue bass. our appetite is further satisfied by the deeper sophisticated tones of lite green. its malleable, swinging groove is governed by its pulsating bassline and dense kick-drum as lazer synths sweep and claps fire on thisclassy cosmic jam. bn300s dramatic and ghostly strings are at odds with its frenetic bouncing bass melody and yet together theywork in complete harmony to create our final musical indulgence from the menu.

debut release on the new kaleidoscope jazz chair reissues label. first release contains some beautiful and well crafted dubbed out techno by kit clayton with his 1998 deadlock tune originally released as the b2 on the 4-track unreliable networks ep (on silent servant s label cytrax ), it slipped under many a record buyer s radar. nearly 20 years later, now that electronic musical tastes have matured and expanded, the time seemed right to re-present, this lush, atmospheric, percussive work out to the heads, deservedly pressed on a full side of 12- vinyl. pussy clap was originally released on the remote label, set up by charles webster, and featured house music predominantly written by charles and neil tolliday, better known as nail. jorge felucca was the alias that neil used when creating the more dubbed out, techy tracks for the label. sounding somewhat like a deep house take on maurizio, pussy clap was also released in 98, but had since fallen into obscurity, and the time had come for it to be rejuvenated and polished with an amazing remaster by pole for the modern ear that is a dramatic improvement on the original

!! new koze !! seeing aliens unquestionably is a banger, its bass riff snaking around your body like a python, its high-drama strings, pianos and outbursts of noise designed for maximum crowd pressure release. but, again, it sounds like nothing else, and its dynamics and twists unfold over eight and a half minutes in ways that will mess with your head every time no matter how many times you hear it. the exclusive b-side track, nein könig nein (no king no!), meanwhile, is slightly gentler on the face of it: it’s less about sonic pressure, more about hip-shaking syncopation. but it too tells strange fairytales in its peculiar and brain-tweaking accumulation of detail, and though you’ll hear archetypal sounds from the heart of house and disco in it, every last one of them becomes new and otherworldly.

kevin de vries delivers big room drama on his ‘aratak’ ep for afterlife recordings.
spirited synth lines, drum rolls, gripping moments of silence and weighty kick drums make the title track of de vries’ afterlife debut formidable club gear. ‘sciamachy’ is more subtle, centred around a euphoric arpeggio which spirals to its apex. konstantin sibold contributes a fine remix, toning down certain elements of ‘sciamachy’ to let others shine. it completes an ep that brims with energy and dancefloor dynamism, a hugely exciting first full record for de vries on afterlife.

* sheffield-based subaltern resident taiko returns to the imprint with a stunning selection of four distinctively grimy pieces of sub-bass science, proving once again his original take on the 140 bass realm. a. trenches introducing his unique style once again with a fresh twist, taiko delivers relentless earth-shattering bass waves in ‘trenches’, which graces the a side of the release. bells, strings and dark synths set the mood for a precisely executed wall of bass, complimented by subtle vocal work. b1. raid dramatic orchestral strings and horns set the stage for the grim reaper that is ‘raid’ - leading into a dark and roaring synth that accentuates the laid back bass-line. sure to shake every system it is unleashed on, the track keeps evolving and luring the listener ever deeper into a maze of darkness. you can run but you can’t hide… b2. mana pool ‘mana pool’ adds a more psychedelic and subtle edge to the release. synth loaded parts play in exchange with carefully laid out harmonic synth lines complementing the tasteful bass-lines, while remaining the raw edge of the release.

a new adepth audio record featuring canadian rennie foster, including a remix of nomadico (dj dex/underground resistance). the title track witch hazel is a 9 minute long track with no breakdown and a minimal approach to arrangement, with organic elements cycling in and out subtly rather than obviously beginning and ending. a rolling half time, tribal groove drives the power of the track with a haunting vocal sample and layers of percussion creating a heady, polyrhythmic hypnosis on the dance floor. not since rennie s well known devil s water has he presented such an overtly occult offering as this extremely finely crafted ep, and this song represents the initial seduction of the record to the listener very effectively. the second track, navigator, is a drum machine driven workout, again with a polyrhythmic and tribal vibe, this time drenched in a rich, holographic pad that morphs and moves in unexpected ways. minimalistic in presentation, this track is bass heavy and functional for the dj, yet artistic and emotional. the nomadico remix by dj dex of underground resistance takes the elements of witch hazel and re-constructs them in a futuristic style with a more driving kick and molten detroit attitude. a heavier techno approach to the piece, but still intact is the melancholic atmosphere of the original and siren song of the vocal sample. this mix includes a dramatic breakdown and unique arrangement familiar to fans of nomadico s awesome yaxteq label. the last track on the ep is called crossing the boundary is possibly the only track in this style to sample distorted vocals usually associated with black metal, making this a very unique, perhaps polarizing, experiment in sound. evocative of the desolation of deep space and suggestive of sonic dark matter. this track combines rennie s singular approach to dub techno with ambient and drone music and the result is like nothing else currently in existence.

archeo recordings chart a course for the balearics with this laid back delight of overlooked italian island grooves. tony esposito is a long-serving singer-songwriter, and two tracks from his 2004 cd viaggio tribale get a vinyl cut here. dove ce luce gets a special, 90s tinged remix from lucaeffesunset. antonio nicola brunos storia della terra mia is the first of three unreleased tracks from this little known lucan artist, striking a curious note with folk undertones and a sunny disposition. ther s a more dramatic tone to danza e ridanza, which takes on an almost talking heads-esque quality for the b version that closes this high quality 12inch from the ever reliable archeo camp.

the shadows is the new album from leeds-based six-piece tomorrow we sail. building on their debut release for those who caught the sun in flight (gizeh, 2014) over the course of three years, this new work combines perfectly the soaring atmospherics, gorgeously intertwined vocal harmonies and dramatic shifts in tone and dynamics that have come to characterise tomorrow we sail’s sound. yet, there is a new sense of urgency here. very much an album of its time, the shadows draws upon the same sense of connection to both past and present that defined its precursor but features storytelling that’s even more defiant and deeply personal.

the ebm-indebted techno funk of james welshs thread reemerges from the industrial fog, evolved into two outstanding remixes by a trio of established, emerging and somewhat unexpected artists. ozel ab delivers his debut remix, reimagining thread to encompass a widescreen vision of depth and drama. unfolding slowly and ethereally, with military kicks holding down a seemingly weightless, extended breakdown, his taste in dreamlike rave euphoria contains the same magic touch as it has done on previous, acclaimed releases for workshop and lobster theremin. on his garten remix, radio slave takes a percussive approach to the relatively raw electronics of the original track, adding a deceptively simple but immediately effective layer of drums to the production, before unleashing a more filtered and fucked-up interpretation of the riff to winning effect.

slam city jams are back with their first compilation. a 4-tracker packed up with five amazing artists from all over the globe. and lets face it: its a breaky affair! starting off with our munich homeboys from coeo. known for their funked up house tunes on toy tonics, they start into complete new realms this time. ‚never going home‘ is the perfect example of a dope broken beat electro tune, that with its weird synth line & smooth breakdown never failed on a gig in the last months. on a2 the man doppelate from london (lets go swimming rec.) exactly hits the spot with mezmerizing synths, tight drum programming and a crunchy acid bassline on ‚four feet up the stairs‘. the flip side starts off with label head honchos rhode & brown, who teamed up with their buddy leo woelfel from austria, both known for releases on toy tonics, public possession or lets play house. here the name ‚more drama (less hysteria) says it all: pure drama on this breaky acid tune! to round up this great package weve got marco lazovic from moscow on b2. he digs deep ‚in the jungle with rolling 707 drums, dreamy synths and this tropical atmosphere we cant get enough of.

casino times continue on their crusade into the speakers of earth s hottest dancing spots with the fourth edition of the casino edits series. for the a-side, the duo encapsulate the energy that has made the previous records in the series so memorable this time by taking the cosmic sounds of a space disco favourite and reconstructing it into a punchy, euphoric, electronic symphony. the b-side sees the bpm s drop and the concepts become more left-of-centre. the b1, a cut-up uk grunge head nodder, features gritty guitars, a sludgy bassline and a pulsating synth lead. whilst on the b2, a well-loved italo essential is reincarnated as a dramatic piece of sequenced bliss.

the second ep of samuel rohrer’s range of regularity album presents two more striking reinterprations. these new remixes provide an intriguing parallax view of the original tracks, using the percussive eclecticism of the parent lp as a starting point from which to journey into sonically vibrant, feature-rich territories. the production specialists on hand for this project include burnt friedman and ricardo villalobos. villalobos, has already formed a strong working relationship with rohrer’s ambiq trio, lends his talents to both of the eps. (ror remixes i - amel-ep716). nonplace label boss friedman, as well, has carved out a unique space for himself within the electronic world, logging several decades’ worth of releases that with dub-wise production sensibility, skewed humor, and riots of tone color. though each individual remix has its own character, they are all united in their ability to provide a quick cure for fatigue with the common “loop”: though not improvised, they are strung together from fleeting phrases that evolve as if they are taking on a life independent of their creators. burnt friedman’s own dramatic interpretation of “microcosmoism” pairs up his consciousness of deep bass and analog inventiveness with rohrer’s continually transforming sound objects, making for a flowing and wordless narrative that simply dares listeners to stop paying attention. feeling more like a collaboration in “real time” than a remix proper, friedman brings his characteristic ‘mad scientist’ wit to the proceedings and delivers an energetic piece that simply glows in the dark. this is complemented nicely by villalobos’ remix of “microcosmoism”. it carries the energy level of the 1st ep over to a new disk, while heavily experimenting with feelings of emotional ambiguity. at some points aggressive and at other points merely curious, this mischievous collage of attitudes feels as inspired by the questing jazz of sun ra as it is by continental techno. contemplative keyboard runs, enthusiastic spring-like percussion and malfunctioning machine chatter all coalesce to make this a most fascinating piece of multi-purpose electronic music.

“sawtooth novel” is a killer track, a special weapon intended for the dancefloor. the rest of the ep turns around powerful techno to more deeper and mysterious atmospheres. after his brilliant works on token and cocoon records, johannes volk continues to impress us!
some johannes’ words about his work for artcub records: “the title track “sawtooth novel” is my little hommage to the old sägezahn sound. there was a sägezahn renaissance in the rhein main area end of the 90’s, which was a huge influence for me when i went to clubs during this time. “counterbalance” has a rather subtle approach, the track lives from its effects and filtering. for the others tracks i want to express the more darker and dramatic side of techno, which is also well-equipped for the more excessive dancefloor hours.”

following the excellent single-sided heater from sharif laffrey, discos capablanca is back in action once again with odopt, previously only spotted on excellent swedish label born free. the record opens up with the ominous, dramatic tones of -belgrade-, all searing synth swells and bloated drums working towards some cinematic apocalypse scenario. on the b-side, -croque trans croque- has a cooler head but instead aims to unsettle with its off-key metal chimes atop a steady-ticking disco rhythm, and then -rex ingram- finishes the ep off with yet more surreal beatdowns that will send the party in a very interesting direction indeed.

hippie priest returns to argot to release his second album, see it through. having made great strides at dialing in his production and strengthening his songwriting since the release of gaia variants in 2016, the young champaign-based producer focuses his sophomore longplayer around a narrative approach. see it through is a day in the life of a lioness, says hippie priest, beginning with the soft ambience of waking up in the morning, leading up to an intense hunt in the middle, and into evening revelry and eventual slumber. the albums 11 tracks cover a large stretch of sonic ground to tell this story. its glowing opener, umbrella keeper gives way to widescreen stompers thorn and quicksand that clear the way for more contemplative moments like crystal or cherry blossom. one cant help but imagine a dramatic hunt while listening to are you okay? or carnivorous displays on desire. even tender scenes are possible with closers tanuki and tired lioness, gorgeous movements in which hippie priests melodic profficiencies shine brightest. second album from the up-and-coming young producer from central illinois.

ed davenport continues his full-spectrum techno experiments as inland with an elegant new ep on counterchange entitled coriolis. the title track coriolis is a moody 10 minute voyage with a morphing synth array at its core - bright, detuned stabs are layered upon tough rhythmic foundations. the jagged metallic lead builds, unearthing harmonic bleep accents and syncopated fx swells, before folding in on itself leaving the effective tribal drum section to ride on. d10d3 plows forward with an urgent staccato sequence, segueing into italo-horror filter sweeps and noise-laden moments of drama. finally tsereteli is a more reduced modern dub study, continuing ed s long running fascination with tranced-out time stretching and after-hours vibes. the 9th release on the label, the record features cover art by uk artist guy archard and is pressed on 180g vinyl.

kid drama’s debut metalheadz release is one that is set to shake up this 4-year-old alias as he heads in a direction that’s slightly more focussed on the dancefloor, whilst managing to subtly retain some of the elements that have seen him become so loved in the deeper and more experimental side of drum and bass. the ‘trife ep’ proves how much of a talent kid drama is, from the savage bassline in ‘brutal d’ to the late 90s techstep vibes of ‘articulation’ all the way to ‘payback’, which is a track that could have easily come out under his and boddika’s instra:mental moniker. this is an extremely well-rounded project and one we’re delighted to be releasing on metalheadz.

various is a good word to describe this escales vol.2 from croisière musique crew, the second various e.p. from the label, which seems so diverse that it almost could seem inconsistent to someone not familiar with the label. at the same time this e.p. summarizes perfectly a collection of different styles and aspects of croisière musique, from some heavy dancefloor-friendly house and techno to more abstract acid grooves, going through breaky minimalism. a1 – the e.p. starts with battle of wits from sebastian eduardo which is a direct uncompromising floor-oriented piece of house, setting a filtered atmosphere, bouncy bassline and a filtered synth which reminds us of a dubby atmosphere. a thick and compact atmospheric part progressively takes on the middle of the track and suddenly fades to let the main dancing pattern return. a2 – lowlifequalitys is a spatious acid piece which contains elements that are close to the aesthetic of video games. all synths coming together give a sense of confusion yet ordered by the repetitiveness of the loop. the sensation of something nerd and muddle rise from this experience, a expression of weirdness by the member of les points.b1 – programming behavior sets a step back in the ep, evolving around an hypnothic vocal piece which is extracted from an old interview of george clinton, heavily chopped and processed. on top of the simple breaky drum pattern which recenters the experience, gets added an arpeggio and a modular synth sounding sequence which progressively dramatizes the track. rx delivers here a mysterious piece of minimalism, bitter yet swingy. b2 – the e.p. ends with catan, the first appearance from françois, who co-founded croisière musique with rx. starting with an ambiant and breaky atmosphere, catan quickly evolves to a drivy four step techno piece. on top of the leading synth comes different glitchy elements, aerial pads and a disturbing shamanistic glitch in the middle of the track that announces a break which confuses the listener. the track follows-up on this contradiction between the hypnotic grooves and the solid drivy techno.

it all started with a book, as these things often do: an english anthology of metaphysical poetry from the 17th century, to be exact. which may not sound like the sexiest option on the shelves, but hear us out. the gentleman plowing through those weathered pages happened to be micha&#322,,,,, jacaszek, the polish composer who’s spun dramatic shades of darkness and light into gold for more than a decade now. an absolute master of melancholy, from the trickle-down electronics of treny to the vapor-trailed verses of its looming spiritual cousin kwiaty.

futureboogie open their 2017 account with a new release from lizards, the newcastle based duo otherwise known as lee forster and james hadfield. after appearances on labels like leng records, join our club and not an animal records, lizards strut their stuff across two original tracks, whilst man of the moment lord of the isles weighs in with a superb remix. the percussion driven house of “tzatziki” kicks of the release, wrapped in warm and inviting pads and piano riffs. shades of old school chicago house meet sun-kissed balearic vibes on this early morning riser, as the heavyweight bass sounds curl around the raw drum programming and illuminating keys sprinkle over the production. on “aloof”, the tempo is taken down somewhat, as a bass line wanders over a steady kick and otherworldly ambient sounds and hushed vocal clips lazily glide over the 4/4 arrangement. as the track unfurls, more melodic and percussive elements come into play, blossoming into a something quite epic and unique. with a slew of releases for quality imprints like permanent vacation, firecracker, mule musiq and esp institute, neil mcdonald, aka lord of the isles, serves up a deliciously chugging version of aloof. gurgling bass and marching handclaps are dowsed in dramatic synth sweeps and glacial tones, as the good lord takes us on a monumental ride.

a year after his last outing on the label, metamethod is back with a second ep for nightime drama. the man born simon haynes is a veteran of the scene who has worked under many different aliases and is now back at the techno frontline, creating the same sort of powerful grooves that made him so essential back in the 90s. ‘exoshift’ opens things up with a lurching, low sung beat that rocks back and forth as frazzled synths and rusty frequencies skate about up top. it’s body music that really makes a mark while ‘autofac’ then slips into more of a forward moving groove with prickly percussion and woodpecker hits all driving along a bleak techno landscape. last of all, ‘superlifter’ marries bulky, broken sounding drums with celestial pads that glow white amongst the murk and greyness of the rest for he track. it is atmospheric, grainy techno for serious heads only.

kdms, the duo made up of london singer/songwriter kathy diamond and silesian producer max skiba, return with a brilliant sophomore album of club anthems and torch songs, synthetic beats and live instruments. the new old normal, out 9th december, follows their debut album kinky dramas & magic stories on gomma.

based on the irvine welsh novel of the same name, the film version of ‘trainspotting’ directed by danny boyle became a cult sensation. focused on the heroin subculture of edinburgh in the 1980s, the film is occupied with surrealism, black comedy and features a great soundtrack. this album includes tracks from iggy pop, new order, blur, underworld and many more. to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the iconic drama, the original soundtrack is being reissued on cd and vinyl. having been out of print for a long time, the 180g vinyl features replica original artwork that includes special silver spot finishes throughout - front, back, booklet and picture labels, as well as bright pantones.

beat street’s impact was felt internationally as well as throughout the united states. in germany, for example, beat street is credited with introducing the hip hop movement to the country.

australian label nightime drama, run by peter fincher (aka vibrio) and shaun franklin (aka trebek) now serves up its second standout release of 2016. this four track affair comes hot on the heels of the last by yoshihiro arikawa, and is a second release on the label by aussie live act, dj and producer trinity, with steven tang and italian based andee on the remix. trinity has also released on ooc, coincidence and android muziq and regularly performs all round europe. his sound deep and cosmic, heady and hypnotic, as the fresh tracks here prove. cascade drive is seven minutes of direct and elastic house with spacey pads and driving drums carrying you through the cosmos. from the earthmothern label and one half of rk s, andee strips it back to a slick rubber kick drum then layers in a forceful acid line and icy hi hats to really get you under its spell. the longform groove is physical and cerebral in equal measure. the next original is expansion, and again finds trinity serving up a hi tech and soul infused deep techno sound that is lithe and liquid, smeared with great pads and truly timeless. emphasis boss steven tang is the perfect man to remix given his style, and his version flips the cut into a more heavyweight and banging techno effort, but one that is just as littered with sci fi sounds, spaceship trails and intergalactic energies.

benedikt frey s arresting out of here was the second entry of our blanc series. originally a vinyl-only limited release, now the track gets a fresh new treatment in the hands of two mainstays of european techno: roman flugel and simon haydo. flugel s cosmic disco drama rework lives up to its name, maintaining the noir disco spirit of the original track but infusing it with tension-building sequences and strings that give it an extra mischievous twist. our favorite frankfurter also straightens the rhythmic skeleton and adds shuffling shakers to make it a relentless dancefloor weapon. haydo s remix delves into a more dismal terrain, transforming the vocals into haunted echoes, adding esoteric synths and topping it all with razor-sharp percussion in what sounds like a storm of ice asteroids falling into a lake of steel. the 12inch comes in a beautiful sleeve featuring an exclusive illustration by barcelona-based artist pau lopez and design by arnau pi.
