san francisco in the late 1960. the hotbed of psychedelic and rock culture. the dead, joplin, jefferson airplane and a host of others all gaining mainstream acceptance for their acid tinged work. but the city and the surrounding bay area had so much more going for them. a liberal political outlook and a large african american and latino population, meant that musical and cultural reference points were wider and more easily assimilated there than (almost) anywhere else in the united states. two of the biggest groups to emerge from this scene were santana and sly and the family stone, with their melting pots of sound that took in jazz, soul, rock and latin influence. for a while they were two of the biggest acts in the united states and scores of local bands tried to follow in their footsteps. they were hard acts to follow and very few got to the stage of making a 45, never mind a whole lp. one of the best to do just that were leon’s creation, whose debut lp “this is the beginning” acid jazz are reissuing here. a native of san francisco leon patillo led the group, whose multi racial line-up echoed that of his heroes on the local scene. self contained and gigging locally they made their debut album at the tiny studio 10 who also custom pressed the album in extremely limited numbers the music is a perfect blend of acid soul, mixed with hippie sentiments that will get you dancing on the uptempo numbers such as the title track, ‘back roads’ – with its glorious harmonies and the soaring ‘power’. more thoughtful numbers such as ‘until you were gone’ or ‘love’ will touch your soul. so impressed was carlos santana that he eventually asked leon to join his band.

2018 will see the ever-influential acid jazz records celebrate thirty years at the forefront of the uk soul jazz scene. with co- founder eddie piller still at the helm the label continues to stride forwards both with new artists whilst also uncovering old classics. following the recent and definitive career spanning compilation anthology: 1972 -1984, acid jazz are pleased to announce details of two further leroy hutson albums, the reputation enhancing hutson and hutson ii will be available for the first time in over twenty years on vinyl.

college friends and early collaborator with donny hathaway then hand-picked as curtis mayfield’s replacement in the impressions, his solo career resulted in 7 albums for mayfield’s curtom label. they are considered some of the greatest of the era and the very best music from them is collected here.
licensed from mr hutson himself, this represents his first approved anthology, and comes in a beautiful package with an essay by soul expert and mojo award winning writer tony rounce and memorabilia and photos from mr. hutson’s own personal archive.
the first single lifted to preview the album – the previously unreleased positive forces has been championed at 6 music by gilles peterson who described it as one of the most important discoveries of the past ten years.

first out of the traps is a double sided limited edition 45 containing two previously unreleased hutson gems. the a-side is a previously unreleased 1977 recording, which is making its debut on this single. it is coupled with the unreleased full length instrumental of ‘all because of you’.

having recently completed a christmas special of the it crowd (channel 4), his own series toast of london (channel 4) matt berry currently features in vic reeves and bob mortimers new series house of fools (bbc) – which has seen matt described as *probably – the funniest person on television right now.* by the guardian. far from being content with just acting, matt released two critically-acclaimed records of idiosyncratic folklore pop 2011s witchazel and 2013s kill the wolf (an ablum descibed as *equal parts serious, beautiful, english & charming* by josh homme) it is of little surprise that matts forever fertile mind has been affecting his sleep. about a year ago, found himself suffering from insomnia... but he turned the deprivation into a new expressive outlet: music for insomniacs part iv. every note was recorded in solitary during the nights at his flat. cover art by matt berry.

amidst the exaggerated swagger of lad-rock and the self-conscious brit-pop excesses of the mid-nineteen nineties, the nme readers best live act awards, placed an acid jazz combo, corduroy, amongst its top five - not bad for a band of whos stage set largely consisted of instrumentals. formed in december 1991, and signed to acid jazz records in january 1992, the south-london four-pieces live performance was energetic and infectious, rubber-band bass runs, buzz-saw guitar lines, creative funky drumming and a relentless soundscape of hammond organ and melodic electric piano, combined into an adrenaline rush that was exciting, filmic and cartoonish. the fabric four became an instant hit on the international live circuit, their shows a frenetic celebration of grooviness and fun. the recordings featured on this disc are highlights from two informal home-town shows (by invitation only) for friends, musicians, and record label in-crowd. capturing the adrenaline and audacity of a band clearly enjoying the party, these tracks are a memorial to the giddy acid jazz years (bum notes and all), and the place where it all started - london england. you are invited!

tony christie is fast approaching his 50th anniversary in the music industry and to celebrate, new label acid jazz put him back in the studio to make an album that takes him back to his roots.
