this is what happened when keimpe koldijk (one half of bebe fang) and wouter venema (musician and visual artist) locked themselves up during the summer 2011 in a 14th century church in the village of blessum. this frisian village, in the northern part of holland, consists of less then 100 inhabitants. in this tranquil and withdrawn environment the musicians recorded their improvisations on the church organ (which is the second oldest in europe)... accompanied with subtle electronics and a few other instruments... the result is a stunning experience of free spirited music ... meditative soundscapes, lo-fi ambient music and drones including accidental recorded sounds of the surroundings during the sessions... all of this has a charming lo-tech and -live- feeling which only enhances the listening experience... turn off the lights, light a candle (or a few), lie down and let go.

as part of the widely respected bbe j jazz masterclass series, koichi matsukaze’s incredibly rare and much sought after album earth mother sees a deluxe repress on bbe music. this is the third highly anticipated release in the series.

absence seizure marks its tenth release this september, a split package comprising one original from co-founder abe duque and two from label-founder matuss. since its launch back in 2015 the new york city based absence seizure imprint, launched by abe duque and matuss has been a platform for the latters original material and across the past nine releases and picked up support from the likes of young male, sage caswell, dorian paic and eduardo de la calle amongst others. here though we see co-founder abe duque join the part to mark the labels tenth vinyl release alongside label regular julia matuss. matuss steps up with crashing hard a murky, stripped-back number fuelled by choppy bass stabs, minimal percussive bleeps and airy atmospherics . next on the package is abe duques 11-27-2016, a typically raw affair from the new york techno veteran fuelled by squelching 303 lines, robust analogue drums and dreamy arpeggios. the b side features matuss sisabuc fresh closes out the package, stripping things back even further to minute, shuffled percussion, stuttering ethereal chords and permeating sub hits which all flow in unison across its ten minute duration.

young cody currie makes his debut on classic with this sparkling star-strung 4-part 12 ep, ode to eddy. following covetable releases on razor-n-tape, pulse records and better listen, the budding london dj and producer demonstrates his deep and jazzy style in this release, expanding on his usual creative use of sampling by introducing his own vocals and live keys. the title track has echoes of fellow classic artist folamour, blissed-out synths and syncopated drum work creating an irresistible lilting beat. i dont feel has hints of acidity, never alone loops the vocal over a shuffling melodic groove and tale of tales (memoirs of a super freak) is the uplifting finisher. ode to eddy is a supremely promising introduction to an intuitive and gifted new artist.

so gerd and philipp were due to play xoyo one saturday night and the club is 6 minutes from my studio so i suggested we go there first to make tunes for a few hours. we made 2 songs that night and one of them is ‘reach out’. gerd did the drums on my 808, philipp wrote the beautiful lead part on my obxa and i did the bass in my cs80. i added the words a couple of weeks later, they are inspired by leonard cohen’s letter to his muse marianne ihlen on her deathbed. (joe goddard) including fantastic remixes by erol alkan and osborne.

mythologen, aka alexander palmestal follows last year’s debut album mythologen with the 12” ep “church music”. this ep is a love declaration to londons club scenes and some of the titles are named after parts of districts in south east london. the tracks on this record are free and loose in its melodies and you hear that palmestal has worked on pure intuition in the song making process, inspired by the surrounding smells, sounds and people. as explosively impressing as the album was, is also “church music” and the airy, uplifting sound that has become part of mythologens trademark, is developed with a sacral touch. alexander palmestal have since the days of pistol disco in the early 2000’s been one step ahead of most acts in leftfield and house music and have created an own musical space to exist in - something most artist never achieve! “church music” consolidates mythologen’s position as both a guardian and an innovator of modern dance music

this album is a collaboration between labels kontra-musik and kess kill. what would have become of d.a.f. if they had been signed to trojan instead of mute back in the day add a good pinch of absurdism and social realism in the vein of prized film director roy andersson and vanligt folk might just be the answer. the gothenburg groups name can be translated to common people and they make use of primitive electronics, drums and skewed vocals - ranging from harsh social commentary to the purely nonsensical - to create their own take on body music. hambo is the name of a traditional swedish folk dance that was highly popular among the common people at the turn of the last century. with this album, vanligt folk juxtaposes the working class dance phenomena of hambo with modern day rave culture. this is done in the most blasphemous manner thinkable, as is the way of vanligt folk. concepts like nationalism, race and tradition are all treated with the same merry lack of reverence. the only thing that needs to be respected is the dance and those who take part in it, whether accompanied by accordions or drum machines. or both.

!!! 2018 repress !!! of nu guinea’s outstanding ‘world’ ep – the neapolitan duo is set to release new material on tartelet later in the year as part of the labels 10 th anniversary. the beautifully dislocated bougainvilles live lays out some warm analogue textures across a live percussion base, while the vocal edit of title track nu world ploughs a similar furrow to obscure 80’s afro-disco, with rich musical synth work over a pacey afro groove and undeniable jazz-funk flair. the flute mix passes over the vocal refrain from mix one and just gets down and wigs-out on those solos - an absolute killer! exotica dance club sounds like herbie visited the salsoul studios with his banks of analogue gear and jammed out into the small hours, as we head home on the beatless outro, all synth washes and lavish ear candy.

after relocating from california at 7 years old, nasser grew up in a musical environment in new jersey. surrounded by gifted artists from an early age, nasser was fed a diet of authentic 70 s soul, 80 s pop and 90 s hip hop and r&b, which all influenced the spirit of his music and his trademark big production. at only 24 years old nasser displays real musical maturity and a subterranean fearlessness in his productions. mentored by house music master dennis ferrer, nasser has released three ep s and on the indispensible objektivity label, as well as remixing dennis iconic son of raw in 2017. his gramercy ep on suara revealed nasser s more techier side, exposing his wider abilities. his most recent release on objektivity, the just like that ep , dropped in summer 2017, in tune with his first ibiza season. (as a part of dennis ferrer s misfits society crew, a residency he continues in 2018…) here nasser debuts on circus recordings with his first full, self penned, and part sung, vocal single, combined with a intergalactic techno b side that is absolutely not to be skipped over. say something was instantly snapped up by yousef after an early demo was sent to the label owner earlier this year. big, nasty & pin sharp drums carry the original vocal throughout the track, as a playful narrative parties & dances throughout. vocal hook after vocal hook interchange as the slamming 909 drums persist. as yousef said, there is simply nothing else quite like it right now, and as pete tong said it s the best vocal record he has heard in many years, confirmed an essential new tune on the spot… this years bigger than prince..?

you may not have heard the name jackson almond before, but you will have likely heard some of his music. having released on wotnot back in 2013 under the name real, with a flurry of eps, remixes and bootlegs under this name and as part of duo boean (on bbe, warner, xvi & slowfoot among others), jackson has been delighting ears for a while now, with a particular knack for balancing hooks and earworms with original ideas and creative production. this ep began life as a series of headphone jams written when jackson was living outside of the city in self-imposed exile, tuning into the goings on in dance music from an external position. it was then polished into dancefloor gems at the wotnot studio at the total refreshment centre. the music reflects this, with the sonic palette reflecting lo-fi and outsider house, but with a warmth, depth and musicality specific to his own personal situation.

mika visited the moog sound-lab in april 2015. he made one his last known solo studio recordings in the form of two vinyl sized side long pieces. entitled “lydspor” - danish for ‘soundtrack’. mika worked almost exclusively with the lab’s moog modular system 55.
this uk sound -lab instrument is the sole protoype model (containing several golden filters) of moog’s recent sold out reverse-engineered edition (55 units only) recreating the 1970’s classic.
on completion of his sessions mika announced ‘i could work with this machine for the rest of my life….i would need nothing else”.
a second moog session was planned but tragically mika died in an accident in april 2017, shortly after he had approved the vinyl mastering.

2nd ep from david kitts new jackson yous lp released in march this year a mini lp of sorts featuring 5 new tracks! according to david: like lightning was written after a late night/early morning adventure with friends in galway city a good few years ago now. i always find it hard to choose singles but this seemed to be lot of people s favourite album track. i ve availed of every last second of space on the 10 inch to turn this release into a mini-album of sorts with three quite different instrumentals one part folk, one part modular electronic and one recorded using two buddah boxes in the glasgow underground. there are also two unreleased songs that have knocking around the hard drive for a while but fit nicely on this release.

new yorker electronic producer dj spider is back on itay’s out-er with a muggy, abstract techno release “human erosion field ep”, similarly to its debut “v ep”, released in september 2017 and produced in featuring with his longtime friend phil moffa.
italian label out-er presents its twenty-sixth release continuing to explore the diverse musical path between house, techno and experimental electronic - which appears in most cases on out-er’s sub-label pregnant void. “human erosion field ep” otherworldly showcases both a radiant take on electronic as well as gloomy and wild-eyed pieces, an aesthetic approach for which dj spider has been most known in the scene. overlooking to the style of the tracks, the release does contain a sinister mood and a dense, solid sense of groove overall, a typical recurring feature of the producer’s previous outputs.

vox populi field works vol.ii is the second part of a broader project entitled ‘field works’, in which the label travels to different locations in the world in order to collect sounds, eventually creating an archive of some of the finest and humblest musical traditions. inspired by academic methods proper to ethnomusicology and ethnography, this project’s aim is to showcase the diversity of our human cultural heritage, which is threatened by accelerated globalization and homogenization of the worldwide musical spectrum.
this record is the result of a twenty-day trip to japan. led by anthropologist and label founder fred scharf and his vox populi records crew, this is the second instalment on the ‘field works’ series. this 12’’ vinyl release is a collection of field recordings, jam sessions, studio recordings, street soundscapes, religious rituals, fighting championships and wedding ceremonies, all of which were remixed and reinterpreted by japan blues, tim karbon, hiroaki oba & shizka (aka inoue shirabe), delivering tracks whose core represents a wide array of traditional japanese sounds.

ultimate block party breaks volume 6 continues the tradition that began in the bronx in the 1970’s, where “break djs” would take that one part of the record that dancers would go absolutely crazy for. that part where all the music breaks down to nothing but the essence: drums and percussion. these are all truly timeless beats that sound as fresh today as they did when the founding fathers like kool herc, bam, flash and hollywood were catching them for the frst time in community centers throughout the city. we’ve edited and extended these breaks for maximum effect on the dancefloor - so you don’t have to. enjoy!

the third and final instalment in frits two bar house music & chord stuff sees him continue to showcase his distinct style of lo-fi, wonky house - both quirky & unconventional, yet instantly endearing in the same breath. served up first in frits melting pot, theme 09 kicks things off with a shuffling, ukg esque rhythm and rnb flexed vocal snippets, alongside floaty arps and that chord stuff that swells and stabs in the mix. throw in a weighty bass and frits trademark analogue wonkiness and you ve got a prime example of a wentink wobbler. next up, theme 10 hits you with an organ melody reminiscent of a warped crystal waters, before twisting and turning into an edgy off-kilter house track. a glitchy synth line, bouncing bass and dreamy pads will hook you till the end. flip it and theme 11 offers up a chuggier affair where glistening arps are interspersed with squelchy and sustained synths. elements and effects are combined throughout, mesmerising you with a glimpse into the wonky world of the frits. closing it out wentink leaves you with a quirky club stomper, coupling a gritty bassline, saturated loops and off kilter, lo-fi stabs all tied together with a driving kick. across this 3-part series frits has left the fancy titles at the door, letting the music do the talking and demonstrating his penchant for making interesting, engaging and distinctive house music, not your average two bar house music and chord stuff.

the man, the myth, the legend, back in the 80s jesse rae, along with roger troutman and bernie worrell, was part of the p-funk movement that was hugely influential to detroit’s early electronic experiments. lesser known is that the enigmatic scot-funk warrior later produced underground electronic tracks in the 90s. the inaugural release on glasgow label southside shufflers presents two of jesses shufflers on vinyl for the first time on the global 95 ep- a sampler from his pioneering 1995 album compression. ever the innovator, jesse recorded the album collaboratively using live isdn technology spanning three continents, with the resultant tracks fusing african, us electro-funk and old scots influences. 23 years later, jesse’s under the radar shufflers sound more relevant than ever. southside shufflers are a record label and sports collective based in glasgow with outposts in london and amsterdam. sss aint no half steppin!

in 1989, an italo-house act sueño latino released a self titled track, which went on to become one of the most revered electronic music records of all time. louis botella is now set to release a sensational remake on emerald city this september. the track itself samples part of manuel göttsching’s influential e2-e4, an album known for its role in the development of house and techno. fast forward to 2018 and the record is again set to be revived thanks to louis botella, and with the blessing and support of göttsching and expanded music. on his interpretation of the track, louis has stayed true to the original, replaying each part and adding an extra dimension to the tracks through a sparkling piano topline, a new vocal hook and dreamy arpeggiations. louis’ passion for the art of djing was sparked from a young age. at sixteen he got his first gig at a club in luxemburg and released his first record in 1998. since then, he’s released on respected labels such as classic music company, ovum records and poker flat recordings.

ellen allien prepares to release her first ever solo ep outside of her bpitch control imprint and has chosen a label she avidly admires, boddika s nonplus. as a dj, producer, bpitch control label founder and organiser of the regular we are not alone parties in the city and elsewhere, ellen allien was not only there when the techno sound of berlin was moulded in the basements of squats all over the capital but continues to be a tireless advocate of all aspects of this culture more than ever, as indicated also by her international vinylism event series. take a stand , her debut release for boddika s nonplus records, is as much informed by all those experiences as it is by the relentless hope and passion that have driven ellen allien ever since she stepped up to the decks of the infamous fischlabor in the early 90s. take a stand is a three-part statement about (and for) the here and now...
