this is volume 2 out of 2 of hip hop gone wrong from john daly’s west 2 west project.
following up last years well received the smoke clears, john daly returns to the label under another alias - west 2 west which was debuted on jheri tracks vol 1. equally as atmospheric as the ethereal smoke clears, this project is the result of his ongoing hip hop obsession. mpc workouts inspired by current listening, the result isn’t quite hip hop, but sits nicely in the all city beat discography. there’s an after hours headphone feel to the set - spanning twenty four tracks split evenly over two 12 inches - volume 2.

the first record in the “nbn” series comes from fitz ambro$e – a tokyo based producer originally from cape breton island in remote eastern canada. with a slew of self-released cult classic albums and mix cds he steps up to make his vinyl debut with doe quarterz, a 14 track mini lp rooted in fitz’s love of 80’s soul and funk mixed with 90’s hip hop and r&b. stripped down intricate hip hop beats heavily layered with vocals, obscure samples and unpredictable drum progressions, doe quarterz sees fitz come with a uniquely modern sound respectful to its roots – melodic head nodding grooves busting with his original flavor.

10 yrs have passed since this one first hit stores. hud mo and mike slott were right in the middle of lively and formative beats scene that linked glasgow to dublin to london to l.a. to tokyo to vienna to sydney to. the myspace era. still a big tip on this one! 2007 press release: great new record by mike slott and hudson mohawke aka heralds of change. six productions with killer drums, fresh programming and clever vocal chops, going from banging boombap sort of tracks like work that, serious head-nodders like winery or asswank and deeper excursions like future or amuse. tip!

chopped and bemused electronics from italian beat randomiser, herva on his second time out on all city. another 6 track mini lp of organised confusion running the spectrum from sample boogie, broken funk to soundscape techno. according to the florentian producer: the main idea behind this release was to simulate a band - well, a one man band! a lot of the tracks were recorded sampling real instruments and free-running circuits and crafted together with hardware/software sequencing-

following on from his recent well-received 12 on cin cin and previous releases on respected labels such as hivern and permanent vacation. we are excited to present this three track 12inch anya s piano the first taste of the forthcoming debut lp from new jackson from night to night. the title track is a slow building double bass led boogie house groover with saxophonist terry edwards pj harvey/gallon drunk adding more depth to its layered, rich melodic texture. the flipside features two non lp tracks - the ghostly rave sound of in my room with the new jackson signature sound of dusty boogie synths and vocoder of leave me making closing out the 12 inch. beautiful cover photo by richard gilligan, all put together as ever by practice and theory.

second outing on the label from las gb (gifted & blessed), this time on 12 inch. following on from his recent provider 12 this is another great showcase of his ever-developing sound styles. 2 tracks here with >7 in 24< a dense 808 led up-tempo workout with a hypnotic groove while on the flip >dogon< is a techno-electro hybrid with a nod to the pre-millennium motor city sound.
the rest of it is all city standard - full one off colour art – this time from brightons roid (msk).

weighty 2 track 12inch from this ruthless producer! all city hook it up, yet again! ruckazoid is one of the most innovative and forward-looking artists in the global hip hop and beats world of the last decade. happy to exist outside of the mainstream - or indeed any scene – his career has been a forward march of jaw droppingly incredible releases. this here is a two track ep of incredible analogue sounds and melodies.

eleventh and conclusive ten inch of the la series comes from two thirds of the sa-ra creative partners shafiq husayn and om mas keith. working solo on each side shafiq is first with seven minutes of funk split into three parts. >dna splice mix< is an intense mix of hip hop and funk beats, chopped vocals, jazz and soul combining to form an infectious for-the-heads downtown la sound. flipping over om mas goes uptown and gives us a more polished sound with a leftfield r n b - hip hop vocal track >girls a player<. instrumental plus accapella included for potential remixers.

2nd ep from david kitts new jackson yous lp released in march this year a mini lp of sorts featuring 5 new tracks! according to david: like lightning was written after a late night/early morning adventure with friends in galway city a good few years ago now. i always find it hard to choose singles but this seemed to be lot of people s favourite album track. i ve availed of every last second of space on the 10 inch to turn this release into a mini-album of sorts with three quite different instrumentals one part folk, one part modular electronic and one recorded using two buddah boxes in the glasgow underground. there are also two unreleased songs that have knocking around the hard drive for a while but fit nicely on this release.

few artforms are as apt to describing the fervour and tumult of human emotions as music is. songs transport us to real and imaginary places, living someone else s experiences as our own, connecting with thoughts and feelings through melodies, rhythm and words. as a producer working primarily with the tools of traditional hip-hop – samplers, records, synthesizers onra has distinguished himself over the past decade as one of the best of his generation, capable of creating vivid music that sparks the mind of the listener and brings them along to uniquely detailed spaces, both real and imagined

closing out the year with a 4 track ep from producer colm k. inspired by a variety of styles and musical sources with one common thread throughout: samples. 2 tracks for the dancefloor and 2 dusty reprises, most of the music found here is a collage of sounds that zig zags from the soulful thump of seeing to the laid back strain of summary

another slice of hardcore funky eccentricity from the mind and machines of lars stowe aka anno stamm, this one is a sequel of sorts to his fragmentsa release with us from few years back. another well crafted 3 track 12 inch building off his recent to gravit & symmet we rhyth lp running the gamut of the house-techno spectrum. kicking it off with the slow build of the soundscape groover la viande, leading into the flipside mainroom thump of do yoused to go and closing the 12 with the shimmering synth workout of pyramid peach.

second 12 off the -from night to night- lp features the charming slow jam - put the love in it. a finely crafted pop pysche tune that sounds like it could have come straight off a ppu reissue rounded off with sax and woodwinds from ben castle. reaching into his bag of unreleased bits, the tempo gets upped on the vocoder boogie bounce sound of -let the freak come out at night- and peaking lights aaron coyes is on hand for remix duties to complete the 12 adding his brand of cosmic west coast dub-kraut-groove to really space the title track out.

almost 10 years have passed since onra arrived with the charmingly eccentric chinoiseries lp. 32 hip-hop beats formed the sample-based project - dusty chinese vinyl hissing and crackling throughout – resulting in an intriguing and spontaneous mix of the producers interest in exploring a newly-discovered style of music with his love for classic hip-hop production.
using the style of analogue mpc production combined with the somewhat restrictive record sampling of strictly chinese music records, he has been able to be creative over three volumes, an amount of 100 instrumentals, despite the challenge of finding more obviously standout samples in chinese music.
the chinoiseries projects are the type of albums that invites the listener to play it from beginning to end, in order to really enjoy the trip and appreciate the variety of rhythms and textures spread over those 32 short instrumentals. in that way, “pt.3” is no different to its predecessors, but the originality of the samples, the curious harmonies and the odd-drum patterns still makes the album sounds as fresh as the first one.
onra finishes this epic trilogy with class as a result of extended record digging across the far east and the producer s own development over the preceding 10 years.
as a producer who has released records inspired by 80’s funk, 90’s hip-hop and r’n’b, electronic and even a spiritual jazz project, “pt. 3” brings this stylised set to a close.

there arent many artists that can lay claim to having put out records on labels as divergent as rough trade and john talabot’s hivern discs. perhaps this is because few artists express such genuine diversity in their musical tastes and creative explorations as david kitt. since the turn of the decade as new jackson he has mined a seam of driving, ghostly house to run parallel with his solo strand of ambient folk electronica. his debut release in 2011 the night mail on pogo channeled early record collection heroes aphex twin and orbital through to drexciya and projekt pm but had one foot firmly in the 21st century beaming in like some futuristic cyberballad. on the flip side hussle free had that mix of house and boogie sensibilities with dark and dusty synths and vocoder that would become a signature. this was followed by acclaimed releases on hivern, permanent vacation, major problems, apartment and most recently cin cin. his debut album set for release on all city in may was recorded in kitt’s bedroom studio overlooking dublin bay, its nocturnal hues very much a product of the nightshift often working on headphones with the rest of his housemates fast asleep. it takes full advantage of the scope of the lp format, ebbing and flowing between deep house club ready gems and more restrained and meditative beatless moments for the morning after. the recording process yielded many eureka moments with kitt finally nailing sounds that had hitherto proved elusive. a key moment was getting a bank loan to buy an sp 1200 sampler

los angeles meets chicago on this infectious, energetic 12. 6 tracks from a mysterious producer going by the name of druguse inspired by juke and footwork sounds. mini lp. a more drugged out cali sun drenched hazier version of the chicago sound, but theres barely time to catch your breath for that bong hit as this 12 baits along with the same frenetic pace and energy of its the mid west inspirations. all anchored by vocal hooks, theres a strong hip hop feel to this quirky and original 12inch.

l.a via philadelphia, beatmaker knxwledge returns to all city with a couple of records this autumn. this one, kauliflowr, a mini lp of beats - a much anticipated follow up to his 2010 klouds ep (repress coming soon by the way). familiar to many for his frequent digital beat dumps, but in true all city style we took ages on this one, on some slum village style emailing ish - forth and back, forth and back back back.. til he gave us 18 tracks - brand new, no second hand, all crafted in his own unique style.

3 track 12 from new but not new artist anno stamm. an alias of berlin producer lars stöwe aka anstam who has been one of our favourite producers around all city towers these last few years. original with a capital o, anno stamm is allowing him to fiddle about in the undergrowth even further. raw and twisted, dark with a dash of colour and heavy with the drums. 3 tracks in all, and those of a certain vintage should be able to spot the sample on lead track * i still have the photographs*. as always for those to whom such things matters - theres the usual full colour shrink-wrapped artwork with a download code.

same same but different, the familiar phrase heard throughout south east asia, is a perfect description to characterize onras latest project, a follow up to his 2007 lp chinoiseries. so almost five years later, here we go back on the trail of another asian beat journey with 32 hip hop instrumentals inspired by chinese and vietnamese music. a lot has happened since then, not least the widespread acclaim for 2010 s boogie-tinged album long distance, while along the way he s revisited south east asia on a few occasions, adding to his asian record stack each time. the exotic, mysterious pop and folk chinese records of the 60s and 70s may not seem the easiest source material, with their epic operatic and orchestral feel, untouched by the western counter culture rumblings of the time, and alive with vintage vinyl hiss and crackle, but after hermetically sealing himself in his paris beat cave, onra has emerged with a more than worthy return for all the time and money spent in the vinyl basements and backrooms of the far east.

southern california meets saturn in the first of a small series of sun ra interpretations. straight out of poobah records in pasadena, ras_g sets the bar high for this with a breathtaking version of the 1971 track >nidhamu< over a year in the making and his longest work to date its suitably fitting counter to sun ras futuristic synth revelations. bespoke cover art for each record of the series comes from stephen serrato.

boundaryless ep fromnew producer, tessela, the first vinyl release for the west country (uk) producer. making some noise in the virtual world, this foray into vinyl is a mix of styles with the heavy emphasis on bass made all the more interesting by the pitched down vocals and synths. ravey but dubby, dark but fun, 3 tracks in all give a proper introduction to his developing sound.

as tight and as punchy as you expect - this are two addictive slabs of fast paced house with a distinctly 90s us influence with a shout to minister farrakhan on vocal duties....
