roberto bosco has selected in recent months kinys music, to better prepare his first 12 inch, consisting of four tracks, named *damaged memory*. the track *unknown* (a1) leads off the dance of the release on last drop records imprint. it is a proper exploration in an unknown sonic territory to most of the people, and also a difficult element to make out for those who are novice to the visionary component in the musical poetic of kiny. the track starts with rounds of recurring sirens, almost deafening, framed by dark and ghostly noises. something not easily identifiable, ambiguous and unknown, as the title itself says, is perceptible in its sound. all this helps to shape a bad presage that fades away into the mystery.

well known on the dnb and dubstep scene for his fiendishly twisted artwork, uk creative genius monsta is also a beast of a producer. in this, his third release for subtrakt he teams up with >mr key< to bring us >space raiders<, a vocal dubstep demon of truly gargantuan proportions, so huge, in fact that it threatens to bring down mankind itself. or maybe its just a packet of crisps? dean rodell bravely attempts to contain the threat on his remix, but an army of space raiders march up out of their packet and flatten the whole city using a supernatural arsenal of sonic weapons that pull down skyscrapers with rasping bass and fry a million brains with shrieking sirens that can be heard in even the far corners of the galaxy. on the second remix dnb hero >raiden< stands up, and the guerilla war begins. taking his inspiration from the paranoid b-movies of the cold war era he morphs the original lead sounds into something so spooky and bizarre the space raiders have no choice but to pack their flying saucers and piss off back to zetareticuli. phew, that was close. supported by maryanne hobbs (bbc radio1)

time to express sp-x joins rekids special projects with four punishing techno cuts this september. little is known about mysterious producer sp-x. after a string of quality releases on komisch, time to express, and projekts, the brussels-based artist has garnered a strong following for his rolling techno sound. the enigmatic producer now joins matt edwards rekids special projects roster, following on from releases by dj spider, jon hester, dj deep, fbkand dustin zahn among others. an amalgamation of metallic hits, powerful drums and plucky arpeggios commence the package in dystopian lotus before the fast paced breaths of separation offers a rumbling low-end, frenzied atmospherics and cosmic chords. the orbiter delivers distorted top lines and a thundering kick on the flip, backed by mysterious sirens and resonant synth blips until the package rounds off with desire of invisibility, a high-octane finish with sharp, organic percussion and a vacillating sub alongside stereo delayed stabs.

the ep opens up with -plastic motion,- a techno track that is full of layers of subsonic pulsations, monolithically consuming the entire a-side. the sounds of the sirens are balanced against heavily stylized basslines moving in and out of the framework while bursts of white noise appear through the fog, creating a telekinetic hallucination. the b-side starts with the title track -confess.- a ruthless song that crushes together bass-heavy broken beat rhythms with straight-ahead kicks and snares. it s about to burst out of its seams any minute as psychedelic synths and buried vocals command it all to stay together.

slow glass is not only the debut release by le frère it is also a very personal diary of the last two years of his life. all four tracks are based on recordings, samples and ideas he collected while travelling the world. with the concept of slow glass in mind le frere tried to catch moments of his life without stripping them of their dynamic and evanescence. the ep starts with lots of positive energy and light but already reveals glimpses of the shadows that slowly emerge throughout the following tracks. nice is a lightly humming version of an (almost) innocent summer morning. it s a collage of field-recordings, synth-pads and manipulated guitar sounds. candid is a light and open dialog between a simple guitar theme and a playful synth-arpeggio. v1b1n creates the dense atmosphere of a rainy caribbean afternoon dominated by field recordings and everyday noises. nttt8-sets a counter point to the previous three tracks as the energy of le frere s travels cumulates in nttt8, making it a more dance-floor oriented piece carried by a dark and heavy bass-line and almost rave-sirens.

since his last appearance on hemlock (2015 s double ep hek025) hodge has produced a seemingly effortless sequence of celebrated eps and collaborations for livity sound, berceuse heroique and no corner. equally comfortable squaring up with heavyweights such as randomer and peder mannerfelt as he is maintaining a prolific solo production output, hodge has cemented himself as a leading voice in uk dance music and a champion of the elusive sweet spot where functional techno resonates with soundsystem culture. a quick listen through his recent ra mix is a great way to keep up to speed with his recent output. one for the hemlock fans who have been patiently tolerating this year s more experimental cuts. swing for the fences is straight down to business getting the kicks in below one of those ear-wormer percussive atonal toplines hodge does so well… the drop is one of the heaviest we ve heard this year and tipped to raise some fingers, open mouths and spill drinks across dancefloors and tv studios worldwide. less pool cue more pool party aomame is a breezy melodic (patio) heater powered by tough drums and intricate percussive work. arranged for both the dancers and the heads it freely refreshes and translates the main theme with a precision and playfulness that few producers can match. medway will warm up or cool out the dance with big room sirens and some rude detuned drum work. still no messing about on the b2: it s a hodge thing all the way.

advanced deep driving techno from amsterdam! jp enfant s let recordings continues to slowly but surely build a fine reputation, and in fact his last ep on the label featured a track, sirens , which got used to great effect by daniel avery on his acclaimed dj kicks mix. now a fourth interesting ep on let recordings comes from shoal, who makes his first out on vinyl after a digital release on planet rhythm in october. utrecht based shoal aims to balance his techno sounds somewhere between rhythmic hypnosis and detailed soundscaping. he urges listeners to twitch out of their comfort zone and to really engage with his music. that is made all the more easy given that it is such inventive stuff. a powerful ep from this emerging new artist.

beneaths early productions first surfaced on the wifey show on deja vu fm. releases followed through his own no symbols label, dj pinch s tectonic and blackdowns keysound. he is widely acclaimed for his originality, in synthesising the dread soundscapes of 2004-2006 dubstep with the rolling tempo of uk funky and echoes of the bleep n bass subgenre of uk house and techno. this debut for niche n bump (orchestrated by a member of the wifey crew) showcases his most uncompromising work, mixing wild, off-kilter bass with mutating, otherworldly tones. swing ting are a manchester dj and production duo behind the city s energetic club nights of the same name. known for injecting up-to-the-minute uk music with bashment-inspired energy, here their remix ably advances that mission. armed with breaking glass, dub sirens and enhanced bass pressure it blasts bellz into a sleek shape for peak-time dancefloors, resembling their 2011 overhall of mosca s tilt shift for fat city.

next up to close out a hefty year of dj-kicks releases is one daniel avery, bringing with him two exclusive new tracks and a host of techno heavy goods. the double vinyl release includes the mix-cd.

limited edition vinyl features white scratch-off ink and a 25 cent piece cased in a plastic outer sleeve. each copy will be unique, as the quarter will move around the plastic sleeve in transit creating its own pattern. this is intentional, so any scratches that appear on the front cover when the vinyl arrives is a result of this. sirens is the highly anticipated second full-length lp from nicholas jaar, the chilean-born electronic music producer, mixing engineer and dj, which comes out on october 14, 2016 via other people/kobalt. a prolific artist with a wide palette of talents, jaar spent his teenage years in dance music circles in new york city, where he now resides. in 2011, he released his debut album, the critically-acclaimed space is only noise. in 2012, he was contributed to bbc radio 1’s prestigious ‘essential mix’ series, winning ‘essential mix of the year’. in 2013, matador released the debut album from darkside, jaar’s project with his friend dave harrington. the band toured the record with a giant, rotating circular mirror, with key performances at primavera sound and coachella. other notable projects by jaar include from scratch, a live concept first developed for moma ps1, pomegranates, an ambient record and alternate soundtrack to the armenian film the colour of pomegranates, and the original soundtrack for dheepan, a thriller by the french filmmaker jacque audiard about a family of sri lankan refugees living in the suburbs of paris. dheepan won the palme d’or at cannes in 2015. jaar is the founder of the new york based imprint other people, releasing music and spoken word by a diverse group of artists ranging from lydia lunch to ezekiel honig

black country overlord justin k broadrick (jesu, godflesh) blesses regis’ downwards fiefdom with two tracks and a tightly sprung rework by surgeon. downwards have really picked the foulest iterations of a grim set for vinyl release, inscribing the industrial-strength torque of nothing is free - which sounds like early kode 9 battered by shapednoise - at 45rpm across the front face, and branding the knuckling 808 snares and distended electro bass blow out of kontorted on its backside. surgeon’s remix of the title tune ranks among his best in many years. trace elements of the original are extruded thru modular kit and remodelled on a bouncing, swerving techno chassis recalling bmb and cub classics, but streaked with sirens and vamped by a marching brass refrain that’s just spoiling for war. the release marks a long overdue overlap between downwards’ and broadrick’s interrelated industrial, noise and techno circles. broadrick was the original drummer for napalm death on their scum (1987) album, before forming the legendary godflesh, and carving out an oeuvre as one of the most feared and respected musicians to emerge from birmingham and the uk ever since.

watch your step and follow up closely: jascha hagen is ahead to take us back on the railroad tracks to a different time. from beam to beam and foot by foot this soundtrack of long gone adventures paints vivid memories in modern colors. jascha knows his craft and how to combine past and present like few others. the result is a lovely luettje two-track ep with a distinct atmosphere driven by lush beats.

throw is the 1st track here, which manages to loop a refrain and bass that candy staton anthem, all the while sounding like a forgotten moodymann mpc jam. vocals, skipping snares, a bouncing tambourine & one of the finest bassline ever written (by someone else) compell you to dance. need your love is a heads down sample house jam. it’s looping vocal, super tight drums, woozy chord stabs and sirens make it feel like the result of a studio session between a 90’s dubbed out louie vega & man-like switch (before he went feral).

black friday secret studio ft. kink recorded in san francisco, the impromptu incarnation of analog sounds and human voices with kink and friends in studio. alarm call secret studio building at pace, a fury of crashing hats and sirens sound out against the empty backdrop of space.

the second outing from yaleesa hall in this two-piece ep series on will & ink. the 13th release on the label packs a visceral punch across four fresh tracks that are perfect for dance floor deployment. first track daisy wright kicks off with minimal but impactful drum rhythms that eventually get cut up with tumbling sirens, hammering hits and blasts of dirty noise. it s hugely physical stuff, while follow up barbara adams is more stripped back and mysterious. icy hi hats tick, howling synths sound bring a sadness and the depth of stern field as sounds play out above, below and all around you is truly standout. harriet brown then sinks into a deeper electro groove with spangled bass, before a vip mix then slows things down to a dread fuelled dub wise swagger that eventually breaks out into oscillating, stuttering rave madness. it makes for one hell of a thrilling ride and kicks off a promising year for both yaleesa hall and the will & ink label.

fresh from his lets roll ep on radio slaves rekids, hopeworks curator lo shea further cements his status as a true innovator of the uk underground with the iterations ep on duskys 17 steps. leading the charge, iterations is 8 dark twisted minutes of tripped-out melodic techno that will sweat the walls of warehouses from london to tokyo drawing a lineage from the omen, atomic jam and the orbit through to berghain, de school and hopeworks itself. on the remix, stockholm’s peder mannerfelt takes it down an industrial rabbit hole of terror-core synths, rave sirens and sonic paranoia. across rest of ep, lo shea flexes his sonic diversity with ornithurae offering an intruiging mix of bruising bass, twitchy layer loaded percussion and sinister soundscapes - somewhere between d&b don dillinja circa 96, early claude von stroke, radioactive man and fellow sheffield legend oris jay. dark, soulful and ravey, higher closes things off with a uniquely uk hybrid that traces lines through militant tresor-heyday techno, vintage strictly rhythm diva house and hardcore vibes.

marco resmann returns to watergate after a productive stint at the red bull music studios in cape town with two stellar cuts featuring local heroes deep aztec and black soda. tack on a remix from the one and only oliver huntemann and another revision from resmann himself and you have the ‘babylon side ep. teaming up to kick things off, resmann, black soda and deep aztec embrace the cultural sounds of africas organic percussion and vocal prowess to create a tour de force tune perfectly balance between flashing club lights and vast open skies. following suit, ‘abadala sees marco again with deep aztec for a lush ride into deep emotional spaces by applying mesmerizing syncopated rhythms and spellbinding vocals ideal for deeper or more sentimental dance floor moments. up next is techno legend oliver huntemann who, playing after resmann earlier this year at the 15 years of watergate event at warung beach club in brazil enjoyed his set and the two hit it off, so logically he was asked to lend his trademark sound for a revision of ‘babylon side and he twists the original into a heavy techno belter complete with sinister sonics and fever inducing sirens. wrapping things up is marco resmann himself with his own take on ‘babylon sides and delivers a wild and twisted version of gargantuan low end and psychedelic shimmers of the original vocal resulting in a killer tune with a ton of attitude.

dubfire and miss kittin have scored another big hit in the form of their second collaboration ride, the follow-up to the much-loved anthem exit. now, many destroyed dancefloors later and they’re unleashing a big pack of remixes to sit alongside their two original versions. solomun may best known for big melodies and hooks, but his remix boldly displays his affinity for heads down techno. a beast of a track, it centers around ticking percussion and pulsating synth delays with a throbbing low end. minimal in approach, maximal in aesthetic, it’s a no-nonsense groove. matthew dear dons his audion guise to remind us how instrumental he was in formulating that oddball techno sound a decade ago, making good use of the vocals in the heady breakdowns and matching them with unsettlingly wavering synth sirens and an almost tribal bass stomp. it’s full of atmospheric touches and pulls off a big room feel without resorting to cliches. depeche mode, erasure and yazoo legend vince clarke is a personal hero of dubfire’s, making his appearance on this package all the more of a special, rare treat. his chunky house groove is decked out with rolling congas, electro arpeggios and a yearning, bluesy guitar lick. french star djedjotronic has himself remixed depeche mode, and his version rounds off the package with throbbing low end, harrowing synths, techy percussion and brooding reese bass swells. with four very different mixes to choose from, this is an immense package that is set to cause havoc on dancefloors worldwide for some time to come.

the second release on tb arthurs (312) label finds the mysterious artist revealing a collaborative project with magda as blotter trax. the pair first encountered each other at the famous motor city record store record time, when detroit artist bmg introduced his then co-workers magda and derek plaslaiko to arthur, who was visiting the shop from chicago. sometime after that meeting, magda and arthur went into the studio and jammed together for a week, the session was recorded live on analog 1/4 tape and then three tracks were selected for release. 1a is six and a half minutes of modulated synth sounds that are psyched out and sci-fi, spooky and truly atmospheric. full of cerebral cinematism, acid lines and ghoulish textures all add up to a truly standout track. 2a then marries dark wave pops and clicks, unsettling alien lifeforms and menacing, slo motion industrial drums into a physical and imposing groover riddled with paranoid sirens and drones. last of all, 2b snakes and slithers its way through undulating drums, cosmic freakiness and gloopy synth sounds that are all seductive and subversive in equal measure. this, then, is a truly fascinating pairing.

after releasing with chris moss acid on shipwreck in 2014, drvg cvltvre is now back with a full ep of his own on dutch label cos_mos. since 2009, vincent koreman a.k.a. drvg cvltvre has been churning out his own acid, no wave and experimental house on labels like viewlexx and permanent vacation and now kicks off the new year in style with three more inventive offerings. new earth army is a slow, heavyweight and coarse track with rattling chords, angry percussion and elastic drums that manages to be physical and tough yet groovy and playful at the same time. we have become the filth of the universe is a big, fat, heavy wedge of slow motion techno with monstrous drums and wild acid lines all spraying about wildly for the duration. it’s a warehouse sized track that will reduce the ‘floor to a writhing mess and finally possessed is a sci-fi riddled track with lots of spacey synths, filtered analogue lines and paranoid sirens all making for a turbulent brew of dark and otherworldly energy. once again here drvg cvltvre proves he has a raw sound all his own.
