love makes the world go around. “two”, the second album by the soul session, is full of love. ralph kiefer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and producer from south germany embarks on a stylistically diverse journey into soul, jazz, funk and world music. being a highly respected session musician in the jazz as well as the crossover scene, kiefer made a serious impact in 2011 with “one”, the first soul session album. “one” was built on a solid backbeat of soul, hip hop and funk, while “two” now takes a step further into a spiritual and eclectic dimension. “quantraversa” featuring the voice of las vegas based neo-soul queen georgia anne muldrow is the mind- blowing opener of this album, a truly deep and intense rhythmic statement. quantraversa is a word which you will not find in any dictionary, but that is not the point, says ralph kiefer. “this album is a journey to the inner self. the recording process was like meditation. i often started with a loop, or an idea for a melody. it evolved from there and i simply let it happen. when i involved the lyricists and vocalists, my drafts sometimes took a completely different paths and ended in something unexpected and beautifully new.” the double vinyl is housed in a gatefold sleeve with download code included.

kingswood drive and accidental return were an early teaser of this new set. displaying their signature analogue sounds and arpeggios, alongside broken beats and soul, you wouldn t be alone in hearing the influences of dam funk, herbie hancock or bugz in the attic coming through on these two. elsewhere more jittery, playful rhythms underpin croydon rooftop café culture. as well as in the calming and ethereal prints on the heath, a subtle tribute to mutual hero prince, who passed away on the unusually prolific day this and two other, currently unreleased, tracks were written and recorded. throughout the ep the duo nod at their london home from the -heath- to kingswood drive and more obviously croydon itself. the sound of south london is threaded throughout this record with pride. even down to the mechanical sunset sound of ep finale thorns, capturing some of the essence of the studio view over london from their high point on the hill in thornton heath. the first ep from albert s favourites co-founders and synth-production duo modified man focused on throwing out heavy editing, recording music with as few processes as possible and grabbing performances as single takes. blending warped cassette recordings that touched upon early jazz-funk/brit-funk influences with the energy of broken beat and experimental electronica, won them support from patrick forge, osunlade, thris tian, yam who? and titeknots to name a few. since that release they premiered new track thorns live on boiler room, going on to deliver a full, three-hour live performance and dj set for the infamous global community. they also provided remixes for dele sosimi, amp fiddler, makadem & behr and hector plimmer, meanwhile, busily preparing a series of four, six-track vinyl eps which will be released over the next 18 months.

following on from releases by urulu and yaki incipient, south street return with their third release of sublime house cuts by flabaire. as part of the highly respected d.ko records crew and an integral part of paris house scene, flabaire s reputation has been steadily growing in the past few years. with a string of releases on popcorn records, organic-music, his own d.ko records and now south street, the frenchman is definitely one to watch!

initial programs is a new project by respected ambient producer mick chillage. it is also micks first ever vinyl release and sees the irish artist focus on deep, acid-tinged techno and melodic electro. the background to the release is a simple one, first cut boss richard be was a long admirer of mick’s music and discovered an electro project he did as the shape. over the course of emails, pints and coffees, the music for initial programs first record came together. the resulting three tracks are melancholic, late night jams, the soundtrack to high speed cruises on the streets of south dublin.

it’s happening again… after showcasing the up and coming arcarsenal from bass cadet records on their first opus, the london via berlin based record label has found another young, talented and as-yet unknown producer – repo man – for his debut release, repo man has found a perfect home at tinh - deep balearic to weird stripped down techno to floor-filler summer jams, the tinh “anything goes” ethos is fully satisfied on this ep. to top it all off, the record comes armed with the great anaxander on remix duties, transforming “open green” into an upbeat, g-funk house scorcher - those crazy synths will get you throwing that bottle of hennessey high in the air!

for those who know the story of the bridge wars, there is some irony found in the fact that scott la rock, representing the south bronx, was born in queens, though he did relocate to the south bronx at a very young age. after graduating high school la rock spent four years in vermont at castleton college where he earned varsity letters in basketball, but more importantly for the world of hip hop he became more and more enamored with music. on graduation he returned to new york and began working as a dj and as a social worker at the franklin armory mens shelter in the bronx. it was at the shelter that scott met kris parker and the duo formed boogie down productions. the rest, as they say, is history. roughly a year after the tragic shooting death of boogie down productions founder, dj and producer scott la rock b boy records and krs-one issued this special remix album, a man and his music (remixes from around the world). billed as a limited edition collectors classic the project was released in a limited run – briefly available in the 90s – and now after years of being unavailable reappears as a tribute to one of the genres early pioneers.

the debut palace brothers album was released in 1993 when much american music was going through a particularly bombastic period. in contrast >there is no one what will take care of you< sounded like a field recording, as though a tape of back porch confessionals recorded by alan lomax as an example of high southern gothic style, had been newly discovered and released.

in 2009 the flamingo records crew compilation captured the white isle s club-juice in ibiza and 12 months later set their sights on the big apple for a new york chapter. now, with the city s musical mercury at sky-high levels, they ve returned flamingo nights to their home streets for the amsterdam edition. this year flamingo honchos funkerman and fedde le grand have ceded the mix controls to label lieutenants nicky romero and deniz koyu - two of central europe s fastest on-the-rise spin-masters.
