after shining a light on the garage’n’breaks of persian and the bump’n’house of brian bristol, the mysticisms’ crew return with another reissue, to a source of love and inspiration, the epicenter of the 90s nyc club music’s explosion and development, with an ep from the music production partnership of lee rodriguez and steven john craden.
better known as the team behind must-have the african dream double-header on eightball records, they were a feature, under numerous pseudonyms, on the early 90s nyc scene with appearances on a who’s who of labels including movin’, strictly rhythm, tribal and with elements of life, on oxygen music works.

la awanto 3 and meditation tunnel appear on the latest blitz, dj tennis’ ongoing, limited, vinyl-only series. these colourful records sometimes pop-up around life and death showcases, often featuring non-standard cuts + off-kilter attitudes. dekmantel affiliate, awanto 3 offers-up an infectious after-party gem, with “the phone we call it.” slow-burning cosmic keyboards pair with elements of detroit techno and a subtle wink to rdj’s masterstroke, xtal. the flip contains a killer from meditation tunnel, the newly-birthed dance project from the rapture’s luke jenner. la la la is a blitz future-classic. syncopated bass guitar, crusty synthetic strings and the purest of vocal performances - blitz #2 is one to remember.

vega records puts together a vinyl package with one of the hottest records in the catalog. now a classic in the uk into my life is getting a whole new treatment and will be released as a double pack vinyl. a brand new version unreleased, the original studio recording of the song before it was remixed in the house format is already being played by gilles peterson on worldwidefm.net then there are the main version, instrumental, and two original dubs, which are all remastered by vegas mastering engineer walter coelho.

alongside farfa and roby j, miki the dolphin kicked italy s tuscan techno movement into high-gear during the 1990 s. earning his first residency 38 years ago, the captivating sounds purveyed by miki and his compatriots would go on to influence the entire italian peninsula for the greater part of a decade. miki can still be found fusing elements of his avant-garde past with future-leaning house and techno in his dj sets today, having assembled a cult-following thanks to his sought-after mixtapes, highly-collectable releases and research into the 432hz phenomena.

saturne is the new project from asc & sam kdc. it came to life a few years back, as a non-specific genre approach to writing music. the first outing from the pair under this guise focuses on grey area compatible deep hypnotic techno cuts. trace elements shows the pairs intent to deliver intricate, atmospheric, genre-fusing tracks of a standard that has come to be expected for their output over the years.

the late 1960s / early 70s brought about a change in sound for many gospel groups. producers and label heads at abc peacock recognized that the traditional sound of gospel needed to be updated to appeal to the younger market. the groups started to incorporate elements of soul and funk with arrangements influenced by the r&b records of the time. this compilation presents 13 striking examples of this seismic shift in black music by some of the greatest groups in gospel music’s rich heritage.

after rebolledo’s successful debut album super vato (cÓmeme cd lp 01) from two thousand eleven, his highly praised mix cd momento drive (kompakt cd 117) from two thousand fourteen, and all-around mayhem during his adventures as one half of the pachanga boys, xalapa s finest returns with his second solo album mondo alterado: a recollection of moments and experiences from recent years, colorful mnemonics encompassing the brightest and the darkest. the result is a kind of soundtrack for a movie that doesn t exist, a sonic journey designed like a mixtape that faithfully reflects rebolledo s background as dj and producer. nine tracks connect for one overarching narrative, sharing elements, motives, details, as they blend together. the artist s signature can be found all over the place, roaming between straight, rock-drenched drumming, sinister atmospheres, raw synth textures, exciting peaks and foggy bottoms - but always following the kinetic flow and relentless drive which are such a big part of rebolledo s compelling charme.

the first compilation on the dresden based label shtum unites three label regulars and one newbie with four tracks suitable for rampant basements. -motorcity racers- has been on rotation for quite some time amongst the label heads and is the first sign from poland s chino on shtum. it floats somewhere between dirty detroit and the rough corners of the netherlands. leibniz delivers the -real life-, a relatively straight follow-up to his latest ep, while jaures hit their drum machines like there is no tomorrow. perm s cut is all loopy and succeeds in creating an irresistible atmosphere with just a few elements. the artwork comes courtesy of carl-johannes schulze.

favorite recordings proudly presents this new official album reissue of music life by crystal: a killer lp produced in 1983 by georges debs (gd productions), and mixing elements of zouk and tropical influences from the french west-indies, with heavy disco and funk flavors.

heard on “melancholia” are interpretations of honzo’s subconscious visions of life. the intense compositions are made up of drones, noises and distorted beats moving in and out of the frame. on opener “orientalism” said elements blend with hi-hat brushes, brassy synth pads, sci-fi noises and distant human voices evoking islam’s “adhan” (call to prayer). the theme contemplates over alienation caused by western accounts of “orientalism”, soaked in “hüzün” (the turkish term for melancholia). on a2 a rework of “moral masochism” is provided by the mysterious shadows outfit, starting with a distorted guitar over a slow and gritty rhythmic backbone which gradually turns into a chaotic high-intensity acid jam on the ep’s most dance floor suitable cut. on the flipside, “lovesickness” presents a broken kick rhythm periodically flipped by toms and accompanied by a disorienting hi-hat rhythm, ghostly strings and sporadic human moans – all resulting in a tribal mood, recalling a ceremony, perhaps a quest for a saviour from the blue temper? b2 presents the “moral masochism” original. again a distorted guitar plays over a slow rhythm, but compared to the remix, the original’s intensity is introverted, contemplating over melancholia’s effect of deriving gratification from self-inflicted moral humiliation. ambient closer “emptiness” explores a cold state with such an encapsulating airiness that it feels like a close account of another person’s mood down to the impression of their breath. arpeggiated synth noises appear from a distance representing increasing pressure from the outside world without ever suppressing the state of mind. as a result, “emptiness” sums up the state of melancholia experienced as a mood rather than the effect of a cause.

introducing damien zala... the next promising young frenchman to release on hold youth. although relatively unknown, his first album *lonely happiness* received strong support from theo parrish, norm talley and luke hess amongst others. combining analogue synths and drum-machines with acoustic elements and samples from old records, the trained sound engineer is a rigorous technician aiming to create sophisticated deep house atmospheres. hold youth provide a breeding ground for open-minded and innovative music, and zalas second life ep ticks all the right boxes. exploring sounds from a broad spectrum, *ms blue* is the moody opener that creates a melange of raw minimal jazz, while the b side continues in this vein with more of an obvious off-key german micro house influence. *considered done* references the late herbie hancock, sampling his voice over a flowing piano melody and punchy bass line, while *tribute to willy simon* goes all out funky, full of brass, with a classic hip hop swagger.

one of detroits true talents today, amp fiddler joins forces with grammy winner louie vega hitting you with some funk deep house on vega records. amp fiddler is the quintessential singer / musician who has played in the seminal band parliament with george clinton, and has had his own band for years now. louie has always wanted to work with amp since first meeting him at the montreaux jazz festival when amp and his band and elements of life were on the same bill on the worldwide stage. finally coming together, amp reaches out to louie for a remix and the result is a beautiful soulful song written and produced by amp fiddler. the remixes by louie vega combining deep house sounds with the funk synths played by axel tosca. there’s one version where amp did more lead vocal overdubs and adlibs, as well a funktified synth solo version which gets immediate response when played. the four versions on 12” vinyl lend itself to different moods and are sure to bring you a dancefloor or house party on fire!
