maps is a project by a london-based lithuanian drummer and producer, marijus aleksa. this labour of love is the culmination of many hours spent touring and in-session with some of the greats of londons bubbling contemporary jazz scene, resulting in marijuss first solo project to date. the ep combines elements of jazz, afrobeat and electronic music through free-form jamming and remixing, with movement and the dance floor firmly in mind.

sugardaddy are a uk electronic music duo formed in 2006 and is the musical brainchild of tom findlay (one half of groove armada) and singer song writer tim hutton (hybrid, groove armada, way out west) �hypnotise- has an altogether late 80 s heavy, low slung, boogie vibe, caressed with beautifully haunting yet soulful vocals. greg wilson remixes an extended rework, holding the vibe of the original and effortlessly extending certain aspects of the groove, creating a 9 minute dancefloor monster! situation are next up with a late night, deep house dub interpretation which builds to a discoesque guitar licked, infectious, yet hypnotic bombshell bittersuite finish the release with a chunky funk fuelled version, full of slap bass and a bucketful of soaring, atmospheric synths, cleverly weaving those wonderful vocals and building to an electro jazz funk masterpiece.

2016 fand in santiago de cuba das manana festival statt. es führte zu einem intensiven dialog zwischen vertretern regional-karibischer musiktraditionen und internationalen independent-künstlern aus dem spannungsfeld von dance, avantgarde und jazz. mit der gründung des labels manana wurden vor ort geknüpfte fäden aufgenommen und weitergesponnen. daraus resultierten bereits zwei außergewöhnliche tonträger. -soundspecies & ache meyi- ist der dritte dieser reihe, er fusioniert auf aufsehenerregende weise folk aus kuba mit britischer elektronik. hinter soundspecies verbergen sich zwei als djs und produzenten aktive brüder aus dem englischen dorset. in ihrer musik loten sie die verbindungen zwischen den klängen und formen elektronischer tanzmusik einerseits und den repetitiven mustern von traditionellem folk andererseits aus. die formation ache meyi hat sich hingegen afro-haitianischen rhythmen und stilen wie bembe, vodu, gaga und merengue verschrieben. und das auf eine ziemlich dynamische weise, was angesichts des bandnamens wenig überrascht. die yoruba-begriffe -ache- und -meyi- bedeuten so viel doppelte power.

since so many european labels have been reissuing lost and obscure 1980s japanese ambient albums of late, it was probably inevitable that at least one label would put together a compilation paying tribute to the sound. it turns out that jazzy couscous has won the race with kumo no moko, a superb double album that does a terrific job in putting japan s 80s ambient scene in context. as you d expect, the majority of the tracks feature either dreamy electronic sounds or a mixture of acoustic and electronic instrumentation, with nods to jazz coming thick and fast. there are naturally a couple of fairly well-known names on show, but for the most part the compilers have done a terrific job in highlight lesser-known tracks from unsung heroes.

the albums one of ra s greatest from the 70s recorded in italy in 1978, and featuring some incredibly otherworldly keyboards that are some of his most enigmatic on record! original tracks from the album include disco 3000, an incredible workout on synthesizer, with a tiny bit of drum machine, a little space is the place breakdown, and all of the wild sound you d expect from a sun ra album plus more long tracks the sweetly soulful friendly galaxy, a great soul jazz number, and dance of the cosmo aliens, which has spooky organ, frenetic bass, and somber percussion. check!

official repress on 12inch of these sought after charly kingson tunes. the label says: charly kingson, (ps. for charlie kingue soppo) is a legend of afro-funk who managed to shake the entire continent up with his infamous 1978 lp, born in africa. often forgotten when conversations turn to afro-dance, and the likes of tony allen or fela kuti, he has been an incredible source of inspiration to many musicians exploring the funkier side of jazz-dance, and this album itself goes way beyond any traditional notion of tropical discotheque. -born in african- itself is a funky groover for the dancefloor and here is the original 1982 remix, made by dutch legendary percussionist eddie conard available again, featuring nimele bolo on the flip-side. released in 1982 on ariola/fleet, but also pressed on the original fleet label. the latter (remarkably with identical catalog-number) never saw daylight. but, we got them all! all in all, this hard to find 12 inch (at discogs copies on the ariola/fleet label go for around 250 euro) was recently re-discovered, and now you can finally enjoy it again

4th tilly jam with four deep disco / house slammer
folks, here is tilly jam number four, served by till von sein with a striking can�t stop, won�t stop attitude. as if the first three fourtrackers were just heating things up, he�s firing out another ensemble of four to bring serious exercise to the floor. �say say say�, the opening title track of this ep checks many trademarks its originator is known and praised for. an explicitly soulful affair, even flexing some g-funk muscles here and there. crackling vinyl noise in the background, warm and thick bass footing, a bassline doing the filterhouse-routine and a sample heavy arrangement that even gets a boost-up after half of its running time. then there is �shadrach�. go do some exegesis if interested where that name stems from. we can assure you, this jazz-infused build-up including nervous hi-hat patterns, a boldly bass groove, a frenzy drum-solo, inciting chants and a horn section scaling things up, stems directly from peaktime heaven. and on b1, �impala� is taking up the thread of this rather outgoing vibe, tvs is going for with this set of tunes. find an energetic beat providing the ground work for filtered adlibs that kinda nail what comes to mind when this track gets mixed in. �whoo-hoo-hoo� � that�s right. just add some subtle percussive lining and let a saxophone take over and you�ll have another trigger for floor-ecstasy at hand. cooling things off a little bit it�s �baden powell dr� as closing cut. tilly is winding up the melancholy-meter on this one, reversing elements and by adding pianochords and synth-pads, infusing an overall mood of wind-whistling summertime-sadness

a love project from the heart and mind of uk broken beat stalwart and iconic keyboard maestro kaidi tatham, alongside an outstanding group of danish musicians led by percussionist peter stenbæk. 12 senses debuts with the movement ep, a record drawing on jazz-funk, broken beat and disco, laced with the distinctive melodic progressions and boogie touches kaidi tatham is known for. recorded over an intensely productive three-day session, which produced 20 plus songs, this ep is a first taste of whats to come from this creative gathering.

for russian electronic music, mikhail chekalin is not only a major character, who has affected the scene�s establishment and development, but also a kind of symbolic figure. his music has been praised by many in the west - from journalists and critics of all kinds to frank zappa and karlheinz stockhausen, while in moscow chekalin�s name was excluded from the official cultural agenda for a long time: he was accused of propaganda of foreign pro-western aesthetics and up until the end of the 80�s wasn�t allowed to release his works or travel abroad. this, however, didn�t interfere with him recording dozens of innovative electronic compositions and contributing greatly to the development of unofficial soviet art in general - for example, providing sound design for the famous exhibitions of twenty moscow artists on malaya gruzinskaya or arranging the first audiovisual performances on a specially constructed light organ.
however, just like all great artists, mikhail himself prefers to focus not on personal achievements, but on creativity. i don�t have a biography - only a discography - this quote of the author may become an entry point of sorts into the compilation presented. this archival collection of works recorded within the period from 1978 to 1987 are chekalin�s multigenre experiments ranging from spatial music (in essence, ambient�s precursor) to more contemporary synthesizer and post-symphonic compositions.

mulatu astatke is widely considered to be the >godfather of ethiopian jazz<

a true japanese jazz holy grail album, this 1975 album was made solely as a business card for an influential businessman and only a few hundred were known to be pressed. the quartet comprises a group of students who never shared a stage with each other and only formed for this one album yet the album sounds as if they ve been playing together for decades. deep modal jazz, frenetic, fizzy and energetic, these five tracks are some of the most coveted and sought after songs from the japanese jazz golden age

currently the rediscovery of long forgotten japanese electronic, jazz and new age music is at a peak like never before. but although many re-issues already flood the record stores around the world: the large, diverse musical culture of japan still got some gems in store that are really missing.

estonian archival label frotees 6th release suvi ei jaa by heidy tamme is available again as 7inch single with new b-side for the balearic heads. while suvi ei jaa is a cover version of roberta flacks song what a woman really means, it was given new estonian lyrics which eloquently describe the summer season and its brevity (title translates as summer doesnt stay). its sung by popular estonian singer heidy tamme, recorded in 1982, and arranged by tiit paulus, one of the best estonian jazz guitarists. after original release of 7 in 2015, frotee has discovered another version of the title track. tiit paulus had played guitar over instrumental version of suvi ei jaa and this version is now essential for our balearic summers.

the 4th edition in the acclaimed sterns edits series sees curator ben gomori open up the sterns music catalogue to other keen re-editors with brownswood / worldwide genius smbd (aka simbad) the first to step up to the plate. nigeria s segun adewale is sometimes referred to as the crown prince of jùjú music, but in the 1980s he developed a sound all of his own, which he called yo-pop. a mixture of jùjú, funk, reggae, afrobeat and jazz, its vibrant melange can be heard on his 1986 record ojo je , where both these originals are taken from. smbd delivers too superb flips of the title track a gritty funk-fuelled disco version with live bass, and a deliciously deep dub-house version. gomori, meanwhile, takes the haunting atewo-lara ka tepa mo se for an extended hypnotic, tribal trip. the stunning artwork comes from kofi ankobra, the son of radical white south africans who grew up in ghana and studied art at oshogbo, nigeria the place adewale himself was born. sterns edits is an official collaboration between african music stalwarts sterns music and londons ben gomori.

the a-side features a set from the miles davis sextet with john coltrane and julian cannonball adderly, recorded live at newport jazz festival in 1958. thelonious monk quartet and pee wee russell�s set recorded live at newport jazz festival in 1963. pressing on 180 gram vinyl.

as well as all the jazz and funk, best italy are also dab hands at digging out italo disco gems that pretty much qualify as proto house jams for their heavy spinning by the seminal chicago djs like ron hardy. this essential transmission from amnesie is a fine case in point, a one hit wonder originally released in 1983 appropriately enough on proto records. now turas makes a welcome return, sounding resplendent in both vocal and instrumental versions, but the real treat for the dedicated diggers is the previously unreleased dub version mixed by legendary dj tony carrasco. thats the jam that will have eclectic spinners getting in a lather.

dan stielow mortazavi has an outer edged family background and a long testament in music starting in his teens with his first recorded project the product that was self released to cassette back in 1983. three decades later it saw a vinyl release on the dark entries label. the debut spite cathedral lp is made with his long-time musical partner karsten svendsen (to feed on others, hinsidan, ate23) and is released with a free bonus 7� on bodies on july 2nd. ultra minimalism streaming from the darkest of places still with a presence of a cold, cold love. with sparse elements they create dramatic scenery. industrial beats backed with something that sounds like hostage jazz and rock drummers fused with the loneliest of themes, epic at times and oh so broken at others. touching topics of man�s inhumanity, paranoid misinterpretations, the fragility of the mind, sex and broken homes without mouthing a single word.

one of detroits true talents today, amp fiddler joins forces with grammy winner louie vega hitting you with some funk deep house on vega records. amp fiddler is the quintessential singer / musician who has played in the seminal band parliament with george clinton, and has had his own band for years now. louie has always wanted to work with amp since first meeting him at the montreaux jazz festival when amp and his band and elements of life were on the same bill on the worldwide stage. finally coming together, amp reaches out to louie for a remix and the result is a beautiful soulful song written and produced by amp fiddler. the remixes by louie vega combining deep house sounds with the funk synths played by axel tosca. there�s one version where amp did more lead vocal overdubs and adlibs, as well a funktified synth solo version which gets immediate response when played. the four versions on 12� vinyl lend itself to different moods and are sure to bring you a dancefloor or house party on fire!

following on from angophora s beautiful long player, ken oath is back with another full length lp from low flung. friends of the label will note that this is his third release for ken oath, and it s a fittingly mature and expansive statement for a debut lp. perhaps mature is the wrong word here, as all his brilliant ideas are backed up by a sense of whimsy that betrays his playful side. the music strikes a balance between styles and spaces that could perfectly soundtrack moments at home, in the club, and in the liminal spaces between. danny s efforts at writing dance music still contain the idiosyncratic approaches of his ambient works: the deadly deep subs and endless echo spirals on -rising damp- sounds like someone trying to piece together a drum & bass track after an off-hand conversation about the genre. he s transmuted the propulsive energy of jungle into something no less dynamic, full of stops and starts and sonic pressure but flush with space. -tarp climber- is at heart a rollicking digi-dub. the more ambient moments of the lp are equally captivating - the glassy tones of -frozen coat- sound like a space-age ensemble soundtracking a floating lounge on a suite of glass instruments, while -ocean grove- blends field recordings and dreamy synthesizer melodies to create an uncanny sense of place that unroots you from wherever you re listening. there s a heavy emphasis on danny s collaborators as well - the cold emotion duo is reprised on the spacey �hills hoist�. closer -bacchus marsh- is a collaboration with prophets, a cross-state ensemble that defy any easy categorisation. the music here flirts with jazz and minimalism but with a dubwise production aesthetic to produce something that recalls khan jamal s visionary -drum dance to the motherland- in spirit and practice, but this whole album sounds as otherworldly and one-of-a-kind as the aforementioned lp.

for our next excursion, we�re off to the library. in search of library records that is - you know the type, the crazy rare records used for soundtracks and such and such. we have a sick selection of synthed-up beats and pieces chopped together by one earl jeffers, making the most out of his international library digging card* (*not a real thing).
for those that don�t know, cardiff�s earl jeffers is one half of darkhouse family, regular family at our sister label, first word, on which they released their debut album �the offering� late last year. earl is a prolific producer in his own right, also releasing over the years under the aliases chesus and metabeats on labels like mcde, fat city and local talk, collaborating with artists like byron the aquarius, action bronson and kamaal williams / henry wu, turning his hand ably to house, hip hop, jungle, jazz and more. all this in addition to running his own label, mélange records.
