an in-depth look at the 1970s catalogue of the uruguayan label macondo and the roots of subtropical music: bomba, cumbia, guaracha, merengue, porro, plena featuring 21 tracks by essential names such as sonora borinquen, conjunto casino, combo camagüey, sonora cienfuegos, grupo maracaibo, grupo antillano. set up in the port area of montevideo, macondo discos was founded by the chilean entrepreneur luis onel and named after the town from garcía márquez’s fictional universe. in its early days the label produced a catalogue comprising folk, tango, murga and rock. 1975 onwards, after the release of the lps tropical caliente by cienfuegos and exclusivo! by borinquen, marks the golden age of tropical music in our country according to carlos goberna, founder of sonora borinquen. macondo became a veritable tropical music factory in uruguay, amassing together with guacamayo (a sublabel dedicated to new artists) nearly 200 records in its ten years of existence.

last year saw casablanca-based cosmo records launch its most ambitious project todate, celebrating five years of cross-cultural collaboration. the three vinyl releasesfeatured producers such as san proper, radiq, pier bucci and dandy jack working with moroccan musicians to create a true fusion between modern electronics and ancient traditions. the purpose of cosmo has always been to find a natural meeting place between thesedistinct musical forms, bringing out the best strengths of each practice through real time spent together in the studio, where each artist can truly understand the other in a shared quest for sonic harmony. as such, this latest release marks a step forward in exploring this idea through a new series entitled cosmo jam. as the title suggests, the focus here is on live improvisation. in late 2014 parisian producers masomenos and vadim svoboda travelled to morocco and set up their equipment at the coda casablanca music center. they were joined by m’hamed el menjra playing bass, abdessamad boussahfa on violin and sanhaji on darbuka, and the ensuing jam sessions between these musicians now make their way on to vinyl. no editing or post-production took place – the music you hear on the record was created entirely in the moment. each track highlights the magic of a different instrument – on “be” menjra’s double bass comes twisting through effects processing and subtle distortion, meeting with a low-slung broken beat groove from the visiting french producers. sanhaji’s thrilling percussive flair on the darbuka flirts perfectly with the crisp programming of drums and bass on the uptempo “kaled” and the more laid-back “petit”. boussahfa’s violin makes for some of the most arresting moments on the release, meeting with intricate minimalist rhythms on “mon” and shining in the heart-rending ambience of “frere”. presented across two 12”s, this collection of six tracks tells a most honest account of how gifted artists from entirely different disciplines can find a common ground and create something truly unique. without any studio trickery to hide behind, this is the concept of cosmo records laid bare, and the results prove it is a concept worth exploring further.

back in the days at the west-saxon highlands there was a missile, which marked the starting point. when credit 00 saw the legendary rocket rise on tetris’ final screen, it was the first time he became aware of electronic music at all. since then it actually hasn’t changed that much. he keeps pushing that buttons that belong to the impressive pool of music machines towered up next to his bed. after moving to dresden in 2000 to study fine arts, his passion for synthesizers and drum machines got nurtured through visits of dresden’s club-canalisation. he quickly made himself a name as a dj, who is just doing his own thing and got popular for that reason. as a part of the idealfun-crew he started hosting parties always in the twilight zone between legal and illegal. this led to “robo dance”, dresden’s only and (also for some other reasons) best electro club night featuring guests like dmx krew, luke eargoogle or imatran voima. the track credit made with randy barracuda of imatran voima has probably been created some time after the show. apparently, randy was not in good shape anymore and so “lebensraum” unmistakably bears credit’s hallmarks. for his own music he’s inspired by cannibal movies, number theory and birds. still, his music is not easy to pigeonhole. after all, he loves synth wave, electro, afro, kraut, kosmische, disco, italo, miami bass and other proto stuff – a lot of machine music.

greek producer markos spanoudakis aka kreon has certainly made an impact on the electronic music scene.his percussive and jazz tipped sound has found its place through solo releases for labels such as cecille, robsoul and many more seminal underground imprints. his latest offering on serialism has been widely received by a small handfull of the scenes elite who have been dropping tracks from the ep all summer hualtor kicks of proceedings with delayed vocal stabs that roll over a 4x4 kick and a doubled up snare. the bass groove cleverly pitches up and down and is completed with a series of shuffled hi hats which complete this minimalistic winner. up next on a2 is forpsyche, which encomopasses a tough and rolling drum selection with swing added for good measure, a sub bass, warm pads and erratic lead stabs bring the all the elements together nicely. third track ‘valtera’ then keeps to kreons signature laid back grooves, shuffling drum licks and the use of processed vocal stabs, the track seamlessly rolls with a series of lo-fi glitches and pitch shifted chord stabs. finally forpyke rounds off the package as it rolls out a sure fire drum selection full of swing and stripped-back percussive hits, repetitive chord textures ebb and flow throughout the composition which results in a truly hypnotic and raw dance floor killer, with intricate percussion patterns that are packed full of swing.

auf ulrich schnauss 5tem studio-album “no further ahead than today” regieren einmal mehr die elektronisch eingespielten ambient-pop-hymnen, die längst zu seinem markenzeichen geworden sind. diese sollten fans von künstlern wie jon hopkins und brian eno interessieren. schnauss selbst ist umtriebig - seit 2014 ist er keyboarder bei tangerine dream, produziert unter eigenem namen remixes für pop-künstler wie depeche mode, pet shop boys, todd terje und bryan ferry und hat gerade für die decca-compilation “re:works” bachs “prelude in c” neu in szene gesetzt.
“no further ahead than today” ist klar mehr pop als ambient. starke melodien stehen im vordergrund, die stücke sind mit rhythmen unterlegt, zuweilen gar mit gesang begleitet, eine hymnische note ist immer präsent. spätestens seit seinen beiden solo-alben, die bei dem deutschen label city center offices erschienen, gilt schnauss als ein elektroniker, der manche tugenden des britischen indie-shoegaze-sounds auf seine klangvorstellungen überträgt.

...aaaand we’re back. it’s taken us a little longer than it should have to get this third release together, but oh my was it worth the wait. we’ve rounded up a few of our favourite oddballs to construct the first 2sox compilation release, aptly titled “oddsox vol. 1”.

kicking off the bump sampler is head honcho luke solomon, with his remix of anytime insanity by lil mark. it features vocals by us based vocalist allegra bandy. next up is the brett johnson remix of hot by copenhagen based producer kim kemi. on the b side lil mark s original production runaway, gets the remix treatment by the infamous matt tolfrey for his ec1 mix series. rounding off the sampler is bandwagoneer, a brand new production by lil mark.

‘consistency’, the second lp from the berlin-based techno artist. the 11 track release follows 2014’s ‘en route’ and will be released on heiko laux’s label kanzleramt, a label with which kajioka has worked with closely for over a decade. consistency lp bears all the marks of a kajioka release: a collection of deep, driving, groove-laden and synth-focused cuts. heady grooves which leave little question why ray kajioka is held in such high regard among techno veterans, called upon regularly for remix honours by the the likes of heiko laux, joel mull, pan-pot, elbee bad, alexander kowalski and marc romboy, to name but a few. kajioka’s reputation for faultless production remains consistent on this, his sophomore lp. the full, extended physical release of consistency contains 3 vinyl disks: 2 x 12” lp disks plus a free, bonus 12”.

little beat different issues is a new series focused on reissuing music from eastern european regions previously unavailable on western markets. the first release is a compilation by project orm, the moniker of czech producer team petr and pavel orm. originally formed as a disco group in the late 1970’s, pioneers of electronic dance music in former czechoslovakia, petr and pavel quickly rose to fame as the country’s eminent pop producers. working with the then icons of the communist czechoslovak scene such as karel gott and josef laufer, they stand behind countless hits from that era. however, not many knew that the duo also released their own records, whose sound and artistic direction was different to their mainstream pop productions. this compilation cherry-picks the tracks from 4 different albums released between 1979 and 1984.

‘freedom school’ is well known for releasing music from the likes of ig culture, mark de clive lowe, eric lau and rick “the godson” wilhite. the third volume of the freedom school d.j. series features the work of kaidi tatham. there are three solid tracks on this 12” from beat-down house to jazzy down tempo beats. kaidi brings his futuristic funky fusion to give all the dancers warm and peaceful vibes!

limited 250 copies! sheffields hopeworks has become an essential melting pot for the cultural and musical future of a city whose electronic heritage has surpassed its industrial one. as creative director & resident dj lo shea, returns to the vinyl arm of this warehouse institution with a blistering new ep expertly programmed modern sonics possessed by the spirit of 90s rave & the uks characteristic bass influence abound here. from the syncopated and undulating a way through to the straight up ravery of mark x on the a side, to the hypnotic tribalism of primitive operations were looking at a crisply crafted modern techno suite of the highest calibre. bristols hodge handles a weighty remix of b1, amping the atmospherics and rounding off an ep of precision club tools par excellence.

even if russian producer gradient logic is found here turning out the business on serbian label disco fruit, the sound on the far away ep comes on like a snappy fusion of garage-ready new york proto house and laid back west coast boogie of the highest order. it s the third vinyl release for tonbe s label, and once more marks the serious clout behind the eastern european operation and its closest artists. just try grooving to the slick bass pops on feel me without being transported to an early 80s dancefloor. there s a more organic funk to lock into on i want you slide, but as ever it s hard to tell where the sampling ends and the musicianship begins on this utterly natural sounding ep.

it would be fair to say that hypercolour, the uk label founded by alex jones and jamie russell, have come a long way since the label’s inception 10 years ago.

josh praus has been involved in san francisco’s bay area scene for the last two decades. a prolific collector and player of records, what we tellin’ them marks his first public outing as a producer. as debuts go, it’s pretty darn impressive.
praus has been working hard in the studio over the last three years, creating tracks that draw influence from a wide range of styles and artists. he cites “downtempo, disco, house, italo and techno” as major inspirations, and listeners may hear elements from all of these disparate styles on this assured, confident ep.
