it’s hard to imagine being at the cutting edge of electronic dance music for over three decades, and never resorting to cliché or tired gimmicks in order to create unique and forward thinking music, but matthew herbert is still channelling original and thought provoking ideas into his projects all these years later. via his accidental record label, he has always excelled at left of centre productions, and through a variety of genre aliases (including doctor rockit, wishmountain and the matthew herbert big band), his imagination has always run wild, resulting in an infectious catalogue of music over the years. “brand new love-, featuring the vocals of rising star, zilla, finds herbert creating a dense and dramatic bass heavy cut. a steppers beat, utilizing herbert’s trademark sampling techniques, it’s a killer cut with sweeping cinematic qualities that sounds head and shoulders ahead of the rest. special request, the jungle heavy arm of paul woolford’s many recording talents, is enlisted to put his breakbeat spin on the original, and turns in an absolutely lethal version, choppy breaks, spinbacks and booming subs come with intent, whilst a sumptuous string arrangement accompanies zilla’s vocal for a truly uplifting spirit. “the peacock-, with its loose beats and opaque stabs, rolls along with its industrial undertones and ravey motif, discordant at times but a truly hypnotizing but in the finest of side b1 traditions. bringing up the rear, “cheekbone” is frenetic and charging micro tribal rave (a new genre classification right there), a glorious medley of percussion, earworm synths and guillotined vocal samples, showing just why matthew herbert is as vital an artist now as he has ever been.

concentric rhythms is the new extended player from dj guy, the cardiff born producer who, despite being heavily involved in the electronic music scene since the early 90s, has only really begun to open up his vast archive of productions to the masses.

bristol duo outboxx return after a 12-month hiatus with their trademark low-slung house sounds, and another collaboration with vocalist and lyricist, naomi jeremy. with previous releases on fellow west country labels futureboogie and idle hands, outboxx debut here on hypercolour, completing their bristol label hat trick. sealing the release is a remix from detroit’s andrés, the prolific producer behind multiple releases on la vida and kenny dixon jnr’s mahogani music and kdj labels.

the heavy industrial crunch and rubbery synths of fraks trademark sounds come to hypercolour with the four track berga magic ep. the swedish techno trio have been active since the late 1980s, issuing cassette tapes (and later, vinyl) filled with blueprint techno and electronica on their own boerft records label. following in the footsteps of severed heads, d.a.f. and devo, frak have truly embraced performance art and experimental minimalism over the years, never compromising, always innovating. the berga magic ep comes brimming with raw analogue explorations and delightfully incongruous noise.

impenetrable and compelling beats from cassius select on the fake death ep, his first offering for hypercolour after stunning releases on herberts accidental and unknown to the unknown. an ep brimming with forward thinking vigor and razor sharp edges across six cuts of mutilated beats and dense auras.

yeah 2018 repress !! klasse recordings and grafiti tapes impresario, luca lozano, rolls up to hypercolour with a 12inch par excellence of genre blending, future dance grooves. leaning on his sheffield upbringing, its of no surprise that the break beats, edits and bleeps of his native city seeps into his own forward thinking productions.

losoul returns to action with his first long player in almost ten years, and delivers a stunning collection of compositions for the hypercolour released island time. otherwise known as peter kremeier, the german producer has mesmerized us for many years with his organic and emotive house music, largely released on the influential playhouse label, but of late has seen him release singles for karat and tardis records, as well as his very own another picture label. fans of losoul wont be disappointed, as a diverse yet utterly familiar sound aesthetic pours out over the albums seven tracks in his own inimitable style. the jazzy broken beats of gold tooth shine with their micro-sample chops, whilst mean time is a dense and dubby slow stomp, teasing the drums with space echo and injecting sparse bass work where it matters. inventive, spongy house grooves are delivered on boppin lower and square down smoother whilst the album closer, lava in you is a master class in ambient sonics and shimmering keys over a lo-fi swinging groove. its been over 20 years since losouls signature single open door, and the german producer continues to pour out honest and rewarding music.

whitelabel, handstamped, vinyl only! further explorations in electro soul badness from purveyor of fine funk, gary gritness! on this limited 12 hand stamped disc, gritness presents four cover versions of some choice club standards, lovingly replayed and rearranged in his own inimitable style.

as proprietors of the will & ink label, yaleesa hall & malin genie have been maintaining a busy and consistent release schedule of top notch techno sounds, largely releasing their own, well received, productions. the duo appeared on hypercolours 10 years compilation in 2016 with the excellent buchan trap, and weve been blessed to secure a full single release with the on-point pair. the mechanical funk of artin swings with plenty of assured groove, the shuffling hats, dense kicks and dubby stabs that ping pong across this fierce production mark this out as a real killer cut. dario & marco zenker, aka the zenker brothers, take time out from their busy ilian tape operations to remix artin into a brutal yet funky techno goliath. congas perpetually roll forward, with frenetic 909 hats and raw and ready stabs in what may well be one of the zenkers finest remixes to date. the essence of funk continues in hall & malins music, with cahen, a great slab of compelling techno that never slips too far into darkness, instead keeping an ever evolving groove and some abstract drone like synthesis to keep the mood buoyant. wrapping up the release is brown, a track that finishes as urgently as it starts, perhaps with a cap doffed to the purpose maker sounds of a certain jeff mills, but broadening the palette to allow some trippy sound architecture and an effective breakdown mid way through. modern day techno supplied by a duo that will most certainly flourish over the coming months, yaleesa hall & malin deliver the goods aplomb on this hypercolour single.

having given us a taster of things to come back in september 2016, with the pressing matters single, the cyclist returns to hypercolour with a brand new, full length album. and as the title suggests, sapa inca delirium leans heavily on south american mysticism, not just musically, but in the visual imagery that the eleven-track album paints so well across its various tempos and rhythms. from the tropical burst of mood setting opener, go back to the steamy and pacey percussive flow of inhale/exhale which features regular collaborator tanaya harper on vocals, the cyclist’s fourth long player is crammed full of intriguing atmospheres and soundscapes. antiexist, with its down-tempo rolling snare fills and ethereal gregorian chanting segues effortlessly into a blind girl drinks ayawaska, a suitably discordant and hallucinogenic skit that ensures the album flows into the more rhythmic cuts like skateboarding in the jungle and mirrors (the second album cut to feature harper on vocals). even the traditional jazzier vibes of when we all break down featuring joni are kept rugged and boisterous, with heavyweight bending bass, choppy breakbeats and fx’d ambience amongst the smooth jazzy chords and sweet vocal delivery. sapa inca delirium is one of those albums that will reward on repeat listen, such is the diversity of style on show here, and the detailed and wide eyed curiosity offered up across the long players fifty three minutes.

having impressed on the home grown ep, released in march of this year, london modular alliance return to hypercolour with the 5 track wolves ep. once again, a heavy arsenal of modular synths and analogue hardware were deployed in the production of these tracks, each once packing a punch and aesthetic that will appeal to many. ôbrockie detö fires out the blocks with on point electro beats and melancholic pads, whilst militant continues the theme, with dusted drums and thick washes of bass for a real futuristic funk moment. elsewhere on the ep, the disassembled arrangement of advance & proceed gives off a cold and discordant atmosphere, but remains firmly in groove and sonically tight, theres a distinct jazz flare in the mix also! tremors hits hard and heavy, giving the detroit electro cats a run for their money, whilst the ep title track, wolves is a busy and inspired slab of british idm at its very best.

one of the current techno scene’s ‘hidden treasures’, bristol based a sagittariun has discretely released a wide breadth of music over the last five years for labels like secretsundaze, hypercolour and his own elastic dreams label. two highly acclaimed albums in “dream ritual” and “elasticity” as well as fifteen eps have appealed to those who like their techno without frontiers, taking in blistering 140bpm techno, breakbeat idm and ambient dub with ease. his second release for hypercolour displays signs of crossover appeal at long last… lead track “vanishing point” has already been receiving early plays from the likes of laurent garnier (dropping it in his recent timewarp germany set), spencer parker and len faki. big pumping beats and spiralling fx fall aside to a lone breakbeat that ushers in one pretty special breakdown section. the childlike keys and fathoms deep synth stabs (straight out of the john carpenter school of fathoms deep synth stabs) have already drawn comparisons to the retro 80s vibes to be heard on the american sci-fi horror series stranger things. it’s a breakdown that takes the listener to an uncharted dimension, bookended by slammin’ beats that acts as a perfect mood changer in any set. watch this one soar! “the pathway” keeps things on an all together straighter tip, an incessant tribal loop weaves and filters around a thunderous kick and shuffling hats, ebbing and flowing all the way in what might be a sagittariun’s most club-centric and stripped back production yet. matrixxman (dekmantel/spectral sound) is on hold to deliver a superb remix, pushing the original down a long dark tunnel for a growling and reverberating techno overhaul

as owner and curator of the exotic dance records label , j. albert has released a steady handful of projects on his brooklyn based imprint , as well as showcasing new music from deejay xanax and person of interest . add to that, recent releases on the 1080p label and black opal, and j. albert is fast making a mark on the scene for his raw and undiluted deep fusion of house, techno and jazzy vibes. his debut ep for hypercolour opens up with dont hide it a bumpin and jazzy flavoured house cut, resplendent with rolling snare drums and warm stabs, a sampled double bass riff and choppy vocal refrains xtra sauce is another stellar house track, fans of the ron trent/prescription chicago sound will instantly find an affection here with the rolling drums and soft keys, all pushed along at an energetic pace, whilst vista finds j. albert in more playful mode, carving out a 10 minute jackin underground house vibe that cuts raw and hypnotising.

a riotous romp through imaginatively used samples, familiar piano riffs, customary beats and other rave tropes, the master of mischief luke vibert puts together a 10 track ode to the era of m25 convoys, mobile phone hotlines and raving amongst dogs on strings in british aerodrome fields. with a long and extensive history in the uks dance counterculture spanning three decades, vibert has released a barrage of inventive and animated music over the years that really doesn’t take itself too seriously, and is all the better for it. lps and singles for mo wax, warp, planet mu, ninja tune and rising high really speaks for itself, so its a honour to welcome vibert back onto hypercolour (after 2014s ridmik album and 2015’s return of his kerrier district moniker).

returning to hypercolour with a second volume of his sugar cane chronicles, gary gritness lays down more devastating funk and classy riffing over his trusty roland 606. after the first volume, released last april, sold out its vinyl run, gritness delivers more explorations and adventures into his unique and soulful world. having elusively built his reputation as an outstanding session player, live producer and fantastically dressed funkateer, gritness has delivered a handful of releases on labels like clone crown ltd, nyami nyami and his own diy and cassette-only slikk tapes. steady choosin gets downright fusion-jazz and gritness fires out seductive melodies and latin piano playing of the highest order whilst countin up with starr delves into a darker well of synth mania, with a sexual groove reminiscing of rick james, all the while retaining garys signature licks and riffs. runner joes revenge on the flip ramps up the hysteria for a gritty and colossal production that typifies his love of cyberpunk soundtracks and the drama and narrative to be found in this style. the sugar cane chronicles vol. 2 closes with the low-slung pool shark loot wrapping up on a mysterious and captivating tone, its wandering bassline and melodic touches carrying all the signature gritness sounds, with the p-funk sleaziness on top.

hypercolour round off a busy year that has seen recent releases from the likes of kerrier district, gary gritness, roman flugel, dmx krew and outboxx. and in their 10th anniversary year, the label close 2016 with the heavyweight pairing of mathew jonson & sebastian mullaert. two summers ago, with no distinctive aims or deadlines, jonson was invited to come and work with mullaert and stayed for 5 days in the exceptionally beautiful surroundings of one of swedens national parks

it would be fair to say that hypercolour, the uk label founded by alex jones and jamie russell, have come a long way since the label’s inception 10 years ago.
from humble beginnings, to a roster of artists spanning across continents, genres, styles, and sounds, the label curates a very special 16 track compilation album to celebrate ten years of operation, and to capture the essence of the label’s ethos and energies that have been at the forefront of the label’s output in recent times.

und, mor elian is a relatively new name on the block, but her deft tastes have seen her share the stage with the likes of kerri chandler, mike dunn, seven davis jnr, dj qu and many more, and most recently, releasing her debut vinyl release on the excellent prime numbers label, featuring fxhes ob ignitt on remix duties. on drum vortex, mor strikes a killer release for hypercolour, enlisting two big remixes on the release from joey anderson and markus suckut. on her original mix, drum vortex rolls out a ricocheting drum workout that indeed goes through the vortex, otherworldly voices and cosmic drones sit in the middle of the mix whilst the rides and hats intensify. joey anderson has proven himself as one of the most diverse house producers out there, with offerings for dekmantel, syncrophone recordings and tanstaafl planets. joey remodels drum vortex into an old style warehouse dub, rolling congas and snares with incessant synth stabs and bending strings, making up for one serious remix from mr. anderson. another interpretation is on offer from markus suckut, whose techno prowess has shone for labels like rekids, be as one, mosaic and his own exile label (run with johannes heil)

hypercolour proudly announce the latest long player from uk stalwart, ed dmx aka dmx krew, the visionary british electronic producer who has been responsible for a slew of excellent releases for labels like rephlex, spectral sound, permanent vacation and his own breakin records and fresh up records since the mid 1990s. you exist is dmx krews debut appearance on hypercolour, and as expected the record features nine tracks of beautifully crafted, melodic electronic sounds.

released in may of last year, kerrier districts 4 album became an essential long player, not just because it was creator luke viberts first kd album offering in over a decade, but because it captured kerrier district at what it does best funky, sample heavy, entertaining, good time dance music.

very few artists have influenced the sound of house and techno as much as roman flügel. having been active since the early 90s under various aliases, few have been revered so widely as a dj, live performer, producer, remixer, intellectual and record label owner. the record labels he helped found, ongaku, klang and playhouse, are pivotal imprints in the electronic music scene, and his ability to gracefully incorporate and master most styles of 4/4 has seen him create a range of genres from techno, house, electro, ambient, idm, downtempo, and acid house.

house of black lanterns is the latest musical project from dylan richards, the man behind the king cannibal and zilla monikers (on the ninja tune and warp records labels respectively). with an album and two singles out in 2013 on the highly respected houndstooth label, richards returns with a deadly ep for hypercolour, backed with a very fine mosca remix.

man of mystery, a sagittariun, may not be the first, nor the last, in a long lineage of techno producers to go undercover and under a veil of anonymity, but the west country artist doesnt use this cloak to stir up any hype, quite simply the music does the talking, and since 2011, has released a breath taking selection of music on his own elastic dreams label. and so the archer lands on hypeltd after only one other foray onto labels other than his own (2014s lost cities ep for secretsundaze).

hot on the heels of luke viberts halloween(part one), hypercolour present more acidic business from one of cornwalls finest bleeps exponent, backed with two very solid remixes from and faltydl.

with a current knack of attracting some of the electronic music scenes most revered talent to the label (see recent releases from laurent garnier, luke vibert and losoul), it is with open arms then that hypercolour welcome seth troxler to the fold, bringing with him phil moffa in this new collaborative effort. seth needs little introduction, suffice to say his previous releases on labels like crosstown rebels and wolf & lamb (amongst others) has shone like stars, and phil moffa comes with a very decent pedigree and studio prowess that has seen him previously team up with the likes of dj spider and anthony parasole, as well as running the butcha sound studios in nyc.

a huge supporter of hypercolour over the years, and perhaps an embracing of the british labels dedication to the uk sound (considering the frenchmans early deployment to manchesters legendary hacienda club in the late 80s as resident dj), its of little surprise then that the latest garnier project lands on hypercolour this august.

canadian producer kevin mcphee has already released an assured and consistent schedule of records since 2011, cropping up on strong independent labels such as idle hands, demolition man (with gerry read), wncl recordings and our own hypeltd (2011s blue organ ep). so its a return to hypercolour for mr. mcphee, with the boris ep, with added clout from a superb trevino remix.

west norwood cassette library, aka bob bhamra, has been digging through the vaults of his extensive production library, serving up this delightful double pack of gems and nuggets. some of these tracks have been buried deep for a few years, others have been dubplate only for a while, so you are definitely opening up a pandoras box of delights here.

aah, the breakbeat, the very foundations on which the british underworld of dance music was built upon, takes it rightful place once again, and will azada royally plunders the spirit of the rave scene on his opening track, mysterious white powder.
