spectrum recordings returns after the summer months with a fantastic deep dark two tracker to take us into those shorter nights of the year from italian duo ascion & davide carbone. the a side >shaved< is a stripped down dubby groover, with eerie vocal stabs and spacey edits. this has a seriously tripped out vibe, which is perfect for the after hours, but still with more then enough punch to work at peak time, with some layered percussion or effects. the flip side >spectral town< is a minimal funky track, superbly produced and once again perfect for the after hours. a very cool and classy record from a label stamping its mark on the scene, and still only in its first year of releasing music. look out for future releases from ramon tapia, gui boratto and alan fitzpatrick. big things to come!

jesper dahlback is one of swedens leading djs/ producers with a lengthy back catalogue to his name, including co-production on two tiga albums, the hugg and pepp project with cousin john dahlback, and remixes for the likes of rex the dog, zoo brazil, arnaud rebotini of black strobe, thomas p heckman, robyn, the knife, and depeche mode. jesper has music in his genes, but it was the musical movements in detroit, berlin and london that inspired him to start producing techno, back in 1991 in his bedroom studio. completely hooked, by 1993 he d formed the stockholm-based globe studios together with peter benisch and adam beyer (following a chance meeting on the train to love parade?) and has worked there ever since. in 1996 jesper started the imprint, blank, mainly for his own material, and simultaneously launched joint venture dk with thomas krome - one of the first labels in sweden with a techno house crossover approach! in addition to making music for various techno labels around the world and working with planet rhythm, jesper met up with swiss-born stephan grieder who had just started the svek label. the duo started to experiment with different sounds, drawing on house musics roots, utilising vocals and acoustic instruments. jesper now describes his sound as >ranging between the analogue sounds of the roland sh101 and the precision mathematics of my computer. i m a researcher and developer of unheard sounds! since the founding of globe studios, i have always been looking for new ways to bend the rules and test the unknown. when i dj, i just play my own productions blending old classics with new unreleased demos.< a producer first and foremost, jespers dj dates find him weaving a soundscape of his productions, remixes and collaborations with new material at every gig, as well as musical elements and sounds worked through the set. one of his favourite current ventures is his part in jori hulkkonens acid symphony orchestra.

released in 1980 this italo gem has more recently become a huge collectors item worldwide due to its incredibly hard to find status (ú100 ebay / discogs). this album was the prototype for the whole italo sound, with the majority of it written in 1979, but was only a minor hit in its time and not much is now known about the band. the album spawned two singles gipsy and back to heaven but is full of off kilter disco classics such as mister luck and down to the disco. dusted down and remastered this album has really stood the test of time and given a fresh lease of life its bound to find a whole host of new fans worldwide.

as a production team, run stop restore has been a pragmatic group with marc houle, troy pierce and magda pursuing their own hectic schedules of production and performance. recently, the three members have taken the opportunity to meet in the same studio to combine their unique ideas. their items and things imprint - a label set up as an output for new projects, collaborations and ideas with a distinctly left of centre attitude is primarily run by wireless communication

the third release on phonica records is a no-nonsense dancefloor burner from matt tolfrey and d. ramirez, with a stunning remix from lauhaus. >bounce to me< is an exquisitely stripped-back jack track, propelled along by clipped vocal samples, deep chord stabs and funked-up percussion - as the title suggests, its all about the bounce. thats really all you need to know: this piece of music has been built for the sole purpose of dancefloor devastation and will do the job every time. matt tolfrey is the boss of leftroom recordings and one of the uks most compelling young dj/producers, with releases on crosstown rebels and viva music among others. d. ramirez is of course the sheffield-based producer behind numerous hit tracks for labels like four:twenty and his own slave recordings. the flipside remix comes from underground hero lauhaus, a dutch producer whos made quite a name for himself with his muscular productions for labels like remote area and intacto. here he toughens and tightens tolfrey and ramirezs original >bounce to me< into a rolling techno groove, adding real drama and forward thrust with crisp hi-hats and stacatto percussion. the soundtrack to late summer has arrived. bounce!

phil kieran has been in the upper echelons of the electronic music game for more than a decade, but is only now releasing his debut album under his own name. known for rocking clubs and releasing a string of killer twelves, belfast-based phil has hooked up with german powerhouse cocoon in recent times. sven väths label is now about to release shh, a groundbreaking piece of work that will undoubtedly gain phil plaudits across the board. shh seems to not only reference every sound phil has ever loved in music, but is formulated in a completely fresh and futuristic way. listen carefully and you can detect elements of dub reggae, old hardcore like lfo, hip-hop, early 90s electronica such as autechre/black dog and other warp staples, as well as the futuristic techno that phil excels in. for the album phil went back to old sound lab recordings dating back to the 1950s and 60s. utilising some of these sounds in the initial construction, he built up tracks using a combination of old samples sourced from original and weird places and some live new instrumentation as well. there are live drums, some electric / acoustic/ bass guitar and live keyboard playing as well as some choice guest vocalists.

this 4 tracker comes deep and dirty. tube amplified driven grooves with colorful shining percussions - the unstoppable affectiv exciting melodies on top - plus the ever appearing bonus loops makes this again a very exceptional and personal sounding something twelve inch. the included dancefloor madness will shake your heads once you are down with it. house music that will move you, but also amaze your senses in relaxed listening situations. play that tracks in moody places and this record brings you into other orbits. finally this again has that typical stl vibes inside, for what he is notorious for, meanwhile. buy something - your turntable will be grateful!

alex ridha aka boys noize is, along peers erol alkan and justice, part of a new mongrel breed of techno / electronica artist with a maverick bent and solid vision, beaming a myriad of influences from the past through a prism to create something fresh, new and exciting. founding his own imprint boysnoize records (bnr) in 2005 he achieved to establish his very own sound. alex released the first boys noize album “oi oi oi” in 2007 on bnr which featured febrile club favourites like “& down and “lava lava” and also more soulful techno tracks like “shine shine” or what many regard as one of his finest works, his remix of feist’s “my moon, my man”. official remixes for the likes of depeche mode, snoop dogg, justice, late of the pier, his latest work for royksopp, highly regarded dj mix compilations (bugged out! / i love techno) as well as productions for black eyed peas and canadian genius gonzales proved how versatile he could be. now boys noize presents his second longplayer as a lim.ed on vinyl instead of following the commercial path after the unexpected success of “oi oi oi”, boys noize passed on any big name featuring, the great pop approach or feeding trends. keeping it real, “power” starts where “oi oi oi” has ended and shows the freshest of electronica and techno music.

>elixir< is a driving monster with one of the catchiest and most addictive hooks of the year, instantly recognisable and is sure to be the highlight of many sets as it has been for fergie over the summer. on remix duties is mr henry von, who runs excentric sub-label rekluse with fergie. his >tribal rage< remix utilises the original hook, adds an interesting array of percussion, then takes the listener on a mind-melting journey full of twists and turns. gary beck (still on a roll after his massive >consumed< on minus) also takes hold of the remix reigns and delivers a deep and hypnotic workout that has already been included on christian smiths forthcoming renaissance compilation he liked it so much.

for the second release on ki records we invited a very special and talented artist from japan to join our label. daisuke tanabe, who studied art in tokyo and london, has been producing music for the last 13 years. various releases on zero dbs fluid ounce label and an impressive amount of remixes for gilles peterson’s brownswood imprint have proven daisuke tanabes versatility and talent for modern experimental electronic music. as a live act and dj, he performed with gilles peterson, onra, tim exile, hudson mohawke and clark. we decided to dare a leap into a more experimental way by publishing his outstanding flowers on a wall. the four-track ep will be released in august 2009 (500 copies ww on limited vinyl), simultaneously to his first album on japans circulation records.

whos there?, the fifth release on phantasy, is a collaboration between one of the uks finest djs riton & one of next years exciting new artists primary 1. the track was charted at number 1 by a trak and has has major dj support from the likes of brodinski, crookers and annie mac. annie has also been playing it on her radio 1 show, and its also been racking up radio plays from the likes of nick grimshaw (who made it his single of the week), rob da bank, pete tong and sinden. released on a limited edition of 500 screenprinted sleeve / white vinyls with a sleeve designed by fergadelic.

the model is no stranger to gigolo, and we (the royal we) are no strangers to the model. as a supporter of gigolo records, you, our fated reader, should be familiar with our protagonist previous gigolo adventure. but in the words of the late george harrison, >all things must pass< and with this in mind we would like to reintroduce...
the model doesnt just have his own sound, he has in fact attempted to engineer his own genre: dark-techno-baroque. the sound has been crafted through a penchant for aristocratic mannerisms and a passion for high fashion and low fetish. it also happens to pretty succinctly sum up part of his unique personality. set against a backdrop of refined charm, there s an underbelly of something dark and brutal, which is possibly the best way to describe the a-side >in the night<. in many ways this could be seen as a return to form for gigolo, immediately poppy but structured as a classic song with haunting vocals underpinned with a driving techno rhythm. to further consolidate the techno aesthetic look no further then >flex on the b-side and you have a pounding track that could have been played by daft punk in 96 and will probably find a home with a diverse selection of djs today.
the >vampire funk ep< is the first release from the models forthcoming album on gigolo. the concept is in the same vain, but delves deeper into the dark-side of the model. exploring his fetish with the night and creatures that occupy its opulent corridors. like classic transylvanian tales the music from this album will present details that set the mood and composition to create tracks with narrative regardless of lyrics or words. the result being music that moves both bodies and minds and stirs the blood. as pretentious as this sounds the author of this mindless scrap of paper has the fortunate privilege of speaking from experience. as the mind that moves the hands that moves the keyboard is the mind that is being moved by the music as i type and you read. so we are already part way there. the rest will unfold in the coming months.

the dutchman jeroen verheij aka secret cinema is now looking back on almost twenty years of experience within the field of electronic music. his first production sonar system, which has originally been released on the legendary belgian label hithouse under the alias meng syndicate in 1990 and was re-released two years later on music man, is rightly belonging to the absolute classics of rave techno and has antedated the rotterdam-detroit sound axis with providing a staccato somewhere in between a piercing snare and an acid siren.

marcus sur lives 30 minutes from cologne in essen and has recorded for several labels in the past like pottheads with whom he reached no 1 in the dcc charts with his >stop the junk< release. his latest tracks were released on highgrade and keno records. marcus sur played bass in a band but stopped in the 90ies to get involved in djing which lead to famous residencies in clubs such as >rote liebe< and >baikonur< where he was also responsible for the musical programme. with his release >down with the ship< on trapez ltd he shows his love for minimal music. his definition of minimal though has more in common with robert hood than with recent developments due to the fact that his love for rare groove and deep house music has been part of his life. his 2 track vinyl is authentic and cool and speaks the language of the coal mining district in germany, the ruhrpott. house music has always been big there and lead to the founding of one of the first house distributers in germany, ntt . marcus sur is momentarily resident at the gold club in essen where he will celebrate his release on the trapez label night (26th of september)

alex celler has made quite a splash in 2009! since his tuningspork debut ep trapped in dub, hes had a hitrecord la palma for arearemote, and consequently teamed up with fellow londoner anthea of phonica records. as anthea & celler they released a pair of 12?s forfreak n chic and cÚcille, and now their third effort as a duo appears on tuningspork. down with g.o.d. is a chunky and forceful workout, fuelled by jesus juice, with a distorted bass bounce and vaporous dubovertones that just might make the dancefloorbreak down and speak in tongues.

ultimately affected by this summer, remain records 007: cool water e.p. by axel karakasis aims at keeping the vibes high for the new season. this year has been exceptionally good for axel and remain records, so this release is more of a celebration signalling the third year of the label, which grows stronger by the day!this 3 track e.p. opens up with orisha on the main side, a spot on tune with a straight kick and minimal techno elements that gradually build up to embrace the main character sample. at its peak, the track makes an inspired transition into funky, laidback groove, where axel works mostly present day sounds with 90s intelligence! the second track on the side is a far cry from orisha, as let it roll does exactly that: it rolls! bassheavy throughout, it s an insane piece of work with smart cuts that give way to teasing loopy layers. this track is a burner for serious techno players!the title track on the remain side begins as a mishmash of dub groove, and a rolling bassline. midway, cool water has an extended cut that builds up with relentless sirens and its menacing bassline that seem endless. in a word: flawless!

a1) nop, the tokyo wunderkid of japanese house music, delivers a percussive and groovy remix of the title track >el cubo< (the cube), which has already been getting plenty of pre-release airplay during his sets at the famous ageha club. a2) dich himself goes for a more funky house style with minimalistic influences and top notch production. b1) >lovely lady< - a slightly more up-tempo piece of minimal tech-house that draws heavily on latin influences and even reggae to slowly build into a solid house groove full of dub like reverbs and delays. b2) final track >el camino del inca< is pure modern deep, minimal-tech with splashes of dub. from the long droning synth to the noise and ambience this is exactly what you’d expect richie hawtin to drop these days.

saving the title track for last, electric rescue unleashes the beast that is locomoto. industrial and uncomplicated, this 4am bodyshaker is packed with plenty of percussive punch and crowderuption moments to ensure maximum effect. file under >encore tune<.

minimal music has the reputation to create alot of little. alexander pavlenko, a talented producer from ukraine, is here to change all that and even raise the bar while he is at it! you cant deny this young mans skills for production and minimalism, no cheesy lines, no blips and blobs that we all heard a 1000 times allready. >carbon black< is one of those tunes you will instantly remember.. it sounds so crispy, so clean, so... pavlenko.. and it sticks inside your head like chewing um sticks to your hair.. the flip is no different. on >error 99< pavlenko keeps the drive a bit lower but the effectiveness is immense. dark vibes combined with even darker basslines make this one error you cant call the helpdesk for.

mark stewarts first new material for 2009 has been a long time coming and features three new tracks recorded earlier on this year.
>chadderton< on the a-side is an astonishing slice of deep and woozy midnight house, complete with sleazy chords and a frayed spine that is primed for peaktime narcosis.
>above< opens the flip with relentless chords and a shuffling percussive line that never lets up, while >great day< closes the ep with a cathartic spell that ends almost as soon as it begins, letting in rays of sunshine through the dense thicket of sound that preceeded it.

young and talented boris brejcha has a long musical history. he was trained in playing drums and keyboard at his childhood which had been a perfect school for the following chapter - producing electronic dance music. his sense of humour resonates in his productions as well as his predilection for unconventional sounds. he started showing his talent at several stages and online labels which lead him to harthouse mannheim. now he shows the ropes to his audience with his first vinyl ep and you hear him grin because he knows what hes doing. attention please

erphun has had a pretty hectic summer himself, appearing on steve lawler s viva , dave seaman s audio therapy , oliver huntemann s ideal audio and stephen bodzin s hertzblut . not a bad run at all. with previous releases and remixes on mutekki , saw recordings , excentric muzik and forthcoming releases on bedrock (+ john digweed s new comp) as well as 8 sided dice , this guy has had a busy couple of years...
to complete the package mr henry von (joint label owner of rekluse with fergie) has reworked tu sueno, giving it some of his trademark bite and re-marrying the vocal to the breakdown, keeping things shaking until there is no where left to go but to bring that beat straight back in...
