roots vocalist barry brown has an inimitable style that has long made him a favourite of reggae enthusiasts. drawing from the popular phrasing of horace andy, but morphing it into his own delivery through the kind of wordless slurring that occasionally resembles the sound of a quacking duck, brown found his way into the jamaican music scene through the many amateur west kingston talent contests of the early 1970s, along with fellow aspiring talents such as johnnie clarke, sugar minott and the african brothers, and the mighty diamonds. he also honed his vocal skills on local west kingston sound systems such as tape tone, together with other young dancehall-oriented youth such as barrington levy, sammy dread, roy taylor and tristan palmer. there are still conflicting claims as to who was the first to record brown, with production veteran bunny ‘striker’ lee and sugar minott among the contenders, but in any case, during the late 1970s and early 1980s, he produced a range of captivating work for various producers, much of which is rightly coveted today. ‘ital rock’ appeared on barry’s 1983 lp i’m still waiting, issued by rocktone international, a spin-off of sugar minott’s black roots outfit, based in queens, new york (with a further branch in toronto), the b-side has dean fraser’s previously unreleased electrifying saxophone cut, rescued from dub plate obscurity by jah fingers.

mancini and the creepers is a much needed breath of fresh air that really turned my week around from being horrendous to unreal! with the ridiculous vocal stylings of mancini throwing down some truly unorthodox rhythm, along with the unreal british-accented lyrics, this crew is pure entertainment in my mind. the rapping is done over the production crew, consisting of tommy tempa and frank law’s, beats and is put together in a great package.

>lost in love< is the first single to be taken from l-vis 1990s forthcoming debut album, neon dreams. continuing a collaborative partnership which began on last years >forever you< single, breakthrough bristol-based vocalist javeon mccarthy once again takes centre stage here. through its melodious analogue synths, infectious vocal hooks and sub-4 minute running length, >lost in love< in many ways serves as the ideal entrée to neon dreams. this is the sound of l-vis 1990 revisiting the routes of his dance music love affair. picking up his own theme from the original—the classic french bassline—l-vis 1990s neon dreams club mix pushes the low-end triumphantly to the fore. club is certainly the operative word here, feel the remixs bangalter-esque bassline drop and your minds eye fixes instinctively upon an undulating dancefloor. the night slugs allstars — l-vis 1990, bok bok, jam city — also take the floor on their version, albeit via the neon-tinged scenic route. much like the label itself, their remix is replete with colour, difficult to define and relentlessly innovative.

two more recent 70s, modern soul-style discoveries were issued last year on the “hotlanta soul 4” kent cd. lorraine johnson verified that the sumptuous vocals on ‘a love like yours’ were indeed hers, though again the author of the song is unknown. deep velvet give a much more harmonious take on ripple’s ‘complain to the clouds’, transforming it from a funk growl into a true soul song.

red axes have come a long way since the 2014 s ballad of the ice. tel-aviv, now a scene and sound that the duo were instrumental in putting on the map, has burst onto the world stage armed with limitless electronic bravado and the city s strong guitar music heritage. now, the much loved duo return, sophomore album in tow on their own label garzen records.

alex tsiridis of cassegrain debuts on avian as rhyw. the extended ep, which represents the second outing for tsiridis under this moniker, sees the british producer pit a handful of elastic dance-floor workouts alongside a pair of more experimental, ambient reductions. despite careful processing rendering them decidedly monochrome, the dance-floor recordings maintain a curious colour and musicality. lead synth sequences drive much of the work, ducking in and out of the sonic backwater with considerable dynamism – almost hook-like in their execution, sharpened with ample distortion and melding with intricate drum work to create subtle shifts in tone and energy that propel the work forward. whilst reduced in it’s elements, like much of the best of the genre – the music sees those elements hard at work. tsiridis places atypical focus on groove, eschewing a more linear approach in favour of a kind of greyscale funk that finds its potency in the contrast between components. ‘iroquois’ and ‘aversion two’, the beatless compositions that appear on the ep isolate the ambient constituents of the work – with tonal nods to drone and noise musics whilst managing to hold on to the clandestine tunefulness that runs through the whole body of work.

the owl returns for 003 after two sell-out opening releases. there is a bit more sample trickery on this release with beefed up drums and smooth chords added to the original material. the opening track being a clever disco-house take . the drums are chunkier and the groove is tight! donny hathaway s little ghetto boy gets more or the straight up edit treatment with all the good parts looped for a dj friendly mix. hustle is a very clever rework with plenty of new parts added to give the original a much needed dance floor boost. rounding the release off with a simple yet effective re-do of fred wesley s classic house party .

this is a journey into sound. a series of journeys across the globe, in-fact. this time with don leisure from darkhouse family. let us tell you a story. firstly, we first need to answer a question. who is shaboo? it began in africa. nasser barwani was the son of shabudin. at the age of 15, nasser (don s uncle) left kenya and hitch-hiked his way to london. nasser entered the movie business, occasionally finding himself in front of the camera, acting in bollywood films. it was then that nasser changed his surname to adopt a screen name - shaboo.
5 instrumental hip hop tracks, linked together in a truly unique style and fashion, this is much more than a beat tape. this is a journey into sound. for real.

a strange confluence of sound that sounds part krautrock synth label brain records, part hyperdub. techno haze and synth wormholes with spectacular sound design that has banged at berghain and soundtracked winter night drives. greenspan is known mainly for his work with junior boys and jessy lanza and taraval is a longtime touring member of caribou, but both have released several 12” and eps of electronic exploration over the past few years. inspired by synthesizer minimalists like jd emmanuel, cluster and john carpenter, the two attempted to create a type of dance music with hardware that was indebted to their influences but did not feel intrinsically retrogressive. the idea was to make a type of raw synthesizer and drum machine music that could be listened to beside the hypermodern techno of pearson sound or actress. the cover art is a tribute to a mysterious mural that looms over the hamilton ontario area where the album was recorded. each of the five tracks on the ep were edited down from much longer recording jams which were done with hardware sequencers in real time. the recording was done completely off the floor with no overdubs or added material after the fact.

it s been a while since we last heard from juniper, the manchester-based duo who showed much promise with early outings on underground quality and the like. having previously popped up on a various artists 12-, they return to the ever-essential meandyou with a strong statement of intent, packing five tracks into an ep that presents their subversive style immaculately. -indigo children- is a head-turning cut that fuses uptempo motor city style electro and techno with industrial tones, while -life source negative- switches stance for a beautiful, craftily constructed drift into woozy deep house. every track is noteworthy on this release, balancing immediacy and warmth against experimental textures in a way that sits very comfortably on meandyou.

politics of dancing records welcomes one of england most valued deep house producers, nail, who has done releases for classic, diy, robsoul or mosaic, and berlin s much sought after duo, cab drivers on the remix duty. the asterales ep, is a strong deep house number with two cuts, dub me 2 and u gotta be there, and a remix of dub me 2 by cab drivers. on the a side, dub me 2 is an effective loopy teched-out killer, filled with funk and heady vocals. a groovy peak time winner. u gotta be there is a solid deep house track, with intoxicating stabs and tremendous rhythms. on the b side, cab drivers serve us a refined and powerful remix. a mighty interpretation for an essential release.

munich s counterweight is back with some serious stuff from the hands of gonzo mdf. the second vinyl release of the label cuts it straight to the point: this is techno for the dancefloor without compromise. the madness starts with -don t trust those who talk so much- with its acid touch and rough atmosphere. in a2 endlec translated the track into his own language: beast-techno. in -destroy- gonzo mdf finds the perfect balance between melancholy and aggressive percussion and -we didn t give up- is the perfect way to round up the release. so... we let them talk and we keep on working .

with bjoern torske, skateboard, telephones and last not least the sex tags label all hailing from bergen, the city s not been exactly short on world leading “d.i.s.c.o” , but it s geir hermansen aka velferd that recently cought our ear with his keys. in “the city that drowned” it s unlikely only ever so wet, there s bliss, sun, warmth, heat - all painted bright with skyrocketing masterful synths over very neat and dry bass. great! laid back and somehow dreamy the whole thing catches you by the ear and lingers on but then there s so much dedicated kick and an almost extatic groove in each track - irresistable string hooks made in heaven! “never” and “through the valley” add on to where the title song just left and this give the 3 track ep so much perfectly arranged strength… bergen might well have given birth to another disco standard-bearer.

the third release on the emergent dreamtime label finds bobby bricks and miskotom sharing precious wax space with their own takes on laid back balearic house. bricks is up first, laying down a laid back house chugger propelled by fluttering synth lines that have spent time soaking up plenty of vitamin d. amazon blue does away with the drums for much of the tune, letting the new age synth tones do all the work before a mellow set of percussion comes loping in. miskotom has a more nocturnal feel at work on star master, but it s no less plush in its execution, while ad lucem ramps up fretless bass licks and plastic flute tones for another blissful excursion onto the astral plane.

post scriptum is the latest artist to join the sonic groove records roster. previously releasing on functions legendary infrastructure imprint, post scriptum changes gears stylistically in a very big way with his latest release entitled until you drop. leaving his previous looped based purist techno behind, post scriptum takes his sound exploration into the much darker cavernous world of industrial techno.

null+void finally step up with their second release after impressing with the opening salvo from shinra, and this time electro fans will be in a tizz to discover that radioactive man, monoak and london modular s simon lynch have teamed up for four utterly essential workouts that tickle the synapses just as much as wiggling your booty. -tiger stripes- is a tightly wound snake charmer with intricate rhythmic patterns offset by chilling pad sweeps, while -fruitcake- gets even more frantic with its growling distortion and unrelenting tempo. -land- cools things down to a minimalist techno mindstate on the b-side, and then -aesop- teases out a more melodic kind of electro for the braindance crew.
