after storming the charts in 2012 with mysterious 7 inch championed by todd terje & many others, zambon & kapsa - the guys from the very polish cut outs are back with more goods! following the successful debut, they bring us a delicious 12 inch release with 4 amazing edits based on obscure polish records from the 80s. a side is curated by ptaki, a mysterious duo hailing from warsaw. ptaki (which means birds in polish) fly high and want to keep their true identity under the radar. nevertheless, they serve two amazing cuts here, both based on obscure polish jazzfunk. krystyna is the choice cut, with its infectious vocal hook and irresistible groove. marek is a piece of wonderful balearic slow house with rich rhythm and crazy synth action in the middle. b side comes from maciek sienkiewicz, one of the finest purveyors of balearic grooves in poland. two tracks served here wouldnt sound out of place in alfredos set. song for mohindar is the lead track, with its ethereal new-age atmospherics and exotic instrumentation. syntetyczna kobieta lux is an electronic burner that you may (or may not) know from last years tvpc beats in space show.

currently two of the busiest men in contemporary deep house, alex agore and james johnston have still found the time to establish their joint no matter what recordings as a potent outlet. this sixth release sees johnston at the buttons for sole control after a couple of split releases and the consumer ep demonstrates a further refinement of his own distinct brand of house music. arriving on transparent vinyl, lead track give him prozac sets the tone with a thick four note synth lead that accrues all manner of dreamlike analogue qualities as it progresses backed by those crisp rolling rhythms johnston is known for. columbo likes the nightlife takes things on a notably deeper path, all dubby chords and intricate skipping percussive touches augmented by epic sweeping textures, whilst face down and they had cocktails maintains the same feel if upping the pace somewhat. johnston ends strongly with the sublime analogue build of the sleepwalker.

the recordings for the wires cracked were completed in a frenzied two week period in october of 2012. i had mentioned in discussing a previous albums construction that i prefer to forget how i build any particular electro-acoustic amalgam. this is so that i dont get to precious with them, so that i could refine them further, so that the sounds themselves speak beyond their aggregate parts. with the album being relatively fresh in my mind, i can still recall various components to the wires cracked -- the desolate howl of a metal screen activated by a desert wind, the hissing air compression from the cooling apparatus for a laser at the slac national accelerator laboratory operated by stanford university, and the tremolo rhythms from a thin wire that still get me thinking fondly of günter schickert -- but much of the caustic drone, thrumming reverberation, and tactile grit thoroughly escapes me. that is probably for the best, since these various parts speak to an existential rupturing, the collapse of the self, the aftershocks of dark energy, and a belief in the hope for renewal. demdike stare return to the lab with two extended new productions, inaugurating a series of untamed releases brought together under the testpressing banner. collision was recorded in late 2012 and is pretty much unlike anything you will have heard from demdike before, an intense high-frequency re-arrangement of jungle and noise, like a more brutal variant of the demdike-affiliated hate project, fed through a bank of analogue boxes and pedals, left to spin uncontrollably for 10 minutes before fading to black. misappropriation on the flip feeds off a different noise altogether, perched precariously between the mangled percussion you would most commonly associate with muslimgauze and the metallic clank of industry, a proper sunstroke riddim: angry and unforgiving.

two thirds of the hypercolour label team, alex jones and ste roberts, present the first initials 12 inch of 2013 in the form of shard in the hole by blue & green. otherwise known as bareskin & j.wiltshire, blue & green have already developed respectable reputation for themselves. bareskin, aka 19 year old josh thompson from winchester, has set his stall out with non-standard house workouts for losing suki and hypercolour while j.wiltshire has an imminent ep for the prolific imprint.as with previous initials releases,shard in the hole has a techno leaning stance, albeit one with a far from purist outlook. the title track is a broken 4:4 track that builds towards a solitary pulsing bass note and skittering high end percussion and arpeggios. bring me down on the flip is a housier groove complete with an unnerving bassline and clipped vocal samples complimented with distorted washes and theremin-esque tones.
