masami akita and lasse marhaug have been working together since the mid 90ies. the first release on marhaugs (now deleted) label jazzassin records in 1995 was the >first rock< split single. in 2001 merzbow and jazzkammer (marhaugs project with john hegre) released a live album. later, akita and marhaug executed several live collaborations, but often with other artists such as hair stylistics and jim o rourke. in 2010 they finally got together to record as duo. recorded at gok sound studios in tokyo the results can now be heard as >mer mar<.
made using a combination of scrap metal screeching, analogue synths, and enough effect pedals to give you overweight with most airline companies, >mer mar< is a tour de force for both of these noise veterans, hinting to some classic 80s merzbow jams such as material action.

all source material recorded in gran paradiso, july 2015 engineered at odd phasing and echoes, amsterdam nl photography bjnilsen bjnilsen is a composer and sound artist based in amsterdam. his work primarily focuses on the sounds of nature and how they affect humans. recent work has explored the urban acoustic realm and industrial geography in the arctic region of norway and russia. his original scores and soundtracks have featured in theatre, dance performances and film. celebrating 27 years as a recording artist massif trophies is the first solo release for editions mego. in 2015 he set off on a month long hiking trip in gran paradiso to explore the acoustic environments in the alpine landscape. drawn to the monotonous and physical effort that mountains and high altitudes contributes, this became one of the main inspirations for the album, reflecting upon the perception of the landscape during several hours of physical difficulty, let alone rapid weather changes, horizontal thunderstorms and rock avalanches. it is also about the scope of details and perception of the path and the myth of the mountain as the accursed or sacred place. the five pieces contains narratives based on experiences and recordings from the trip.

i-lp-o in dub is the solo project of pan sonic member ilpo väisänen. capital dub chapter 1 follows the 2015 debut communist dub - a year marked by further descent into economic crisis and instability. the usual business cycles of production / distribution / consumption running alongside macro cycles of boom and bust have been replaced by ossification, austerity, the machine seizing up.
ilpo’s “circular riddims” complement the ebb and flow of the circulation of money + commodities and are mirrored by his field recordings of barcelona rain – the final phase of the cyclical movement of water. but of course the smooth running of “paradise capital” is unsustainable. destroyed techno and open spaces contend with sinister swarming atmospheres. a cash machine flickers. zeros and ones displace another factory. dub as decay – the ghostly remains of tracks eroded by time and technology. the “invisible hand” of the market spasms with tremors.
ferocious textural feedback as music for stock exchange crashes. the soundtrack to heaps of money hoarded by the hidden class. capital is value in motion, but there is nowhere to go. after the collapse, picturesque ruins. capital dub chapter 1 simply asks the question: what next?

recorded in haiku-pauwela, maui between 3rd febraury and 14th february 2016 anthony child aka surgeon presents the second volume of recordings of buchla music easel recorded in the jungle of maui. again we find child s in a more ambient guise and setting as the calm breath of the jungle sets a real time back-drop for his electronic explorations. there is no additional layering and all environmental sounds simply occurred throughout the improvisations. the range on display veers from melodic drones to sparkling arpeggios all revolving around a thick bed of (buchla) electronic and (environmental) acoustic interplay. nine personality type map hovers on a bed of syncopated rhythms whilst the nearby sonic mist of the forest seeths in and out of the frame whilst nightfall of diamonds provides a sonic analogy for the darkness and light contradiction that occurs only in such rich natural environments. the simultaneous acts of improvising, listening and creating provide a rich setting for the curious listener. another gem in a catalogue filled with gold.

compound eye is drew mcdowall (formerly of coil) and tres warren (psychic ills and messages). *journey from anywhere* is their second long-player release following *origin of silence*, an art edition lp on the spring press label. this double lp features 4 sides of improvised electronics that lead the listener into the dark recesses of the duos subterranean explorations. each of these works move at a slow and considered pace, gradually unfolding into a transportive blur of dark psychedelic minimalism. like elements of coil long form works this is a music which has the potential to melt time, open space and create a flowing web of liquid memory. a sublime record for those who like music that encourages travel.

ever since stephen sharp and roc jiménez de cisneros embarked on the deconstructive process they refer to as rave synthesis, the goal was to come up with odd relatives of well established sounds in techno culture by constantly messing with the original recipes, expanding the tropes, and hinting at novel paths for contemporary psychedelia. almost three years after the influential rave slime, their fifth long player takes the idea one step further.

ensemble skalectrik is a side-project of nick ekoplekz edwards. previous emissions include the self-released psycho-geographical abstraction of snuff mill tapes and a homage to maurizio bianchi via feral tapes. focusing entirely on spontaneous composition and one-take improvisation, ensemble skalectrik represents the most raw, extreme performance-based electronic music in edwards repertoire.

in its history throughout millennia it is fair to say the gamelan has never had an encounter quite like this. marriage of metals is a devastating extension of the harmonic properties found in the instruments of indonesia.

the recordings for the wires cracked were completed in a frenzied two week period in october of 2012. i had mentioned in discussing a previous albums construction that i prefer to forget how i build any particular electro-acoustic amalgam. this is so that i dont get to precious with them, so that i could refine them further, so that the sounds themselves speak beyond their aggregate parts. with the album being relatively fresh in my mind, i can still recall various components to the wires cracked -- the desolate howl of a metal screen activated by a desert wind, the hissing air compression from the cooling apparatus for a laser at the slac national accelerator laboratory operated by stanford university, and the tremolo rhythms from a thin wire that still get me thinking fondly of günter schickert -- but much of the caustic drone, thrumming reverberation, and tactile grit thoroughly escapes me. that is probably for the best, since these various parts speak to an existential rupturing, the collapse of the self, the aftershocks of dark energy, and a belief in the hope for renewal. for anyone who still associates oren ambarchi exclusively with the clipped, bass-heavy tones of solo electric guitar works such as suspension, this rhythmically churning one-man-band monster of an album-length piece might seem to come out of nowhere. however, listeners who have followed the breadth of his work for the last few years (solo and in projects with collaborators from jim orourke to stephen omalley and keith rowe to keiji haino) will have noted how ambarchi has allowed increasingly clear traces of his enthusiasms as a music listener (for classic rock, minimal techno and 70s fusion, among other areas) to surface in his performances and recordings, all the time filtering them through his signature long-form structures and psychoacoustic sonics.

over the course of a year, keith fullerton whitman performed a piece of live electronic music a few dozen times entitled >generator<. the debut was given in san francisco at root stratas on land festival at cafe du nord on september 19th, 2009 … over the months that followed stagings took place in venues ranging from flooded basements to festival stages in baltimore, boston, brooklyn, chicago, easthampton, iowa city, jamaica plain, northampton, raleigh, saint louis, san francisco, somerville, & washington d.c.
this lp covers the final two performances of the piece over two consecutive evenings , the opening solo set from the final night of high zero festival in baltimore at the theater project, september 26th, 2010, then the performance during the for eliane night of the propensity of sound festival dedicated to eliane radigues work at issue project room, brooklyn, september 27th, 2010. these recordings show the piece in two different iterations, taking two different trajectories entirely. they are considered as the definitive versions of the piece.

the albums foundation was shaped by a memory and a chance encounter. while remastering some of his early 90s releases and peel session tracks.

in january 2011 mark was invited by erik wiegand (aka errorsmith) to make some presets for his new software synthesizer which he was building for native instruments. after developing about 40 sounds*, mark decided to rework his ul8 project by extending the pattern generating systems used in its construction, which he then connected to the sounds produced in erik s synthesizer. the result is this double 12 single, featuring 9 tracks and a remix from mark s friend and colleague mat steel.

the subtle, operatic opening to part one of do you me? i did sets the scene with a calming atmosphere and slight wave-like noises. odd sounds and echoes appear at set intervals over the track s length. the second part is slightly more structured, but no less ambient, textures float around each other while slight instruments are heard in the distance. rough, grating edges appear half way through—a teaser for the third part, which is somewhat more rhythmic, a distant beat is soon joined by industrial sounds and fractured overlaid rhythms bring unease to the mix while the piece builds to a voluminous finale.

well, here it is! the moment you have all been waiting for.... the arrival of the debut album release by peterlicker. despite following on in that terrible tradition of butthole surfers and throbbing gristle of stupid band names, peterlicker (newly reformed after 20 years of inactivity) have, against all odds, come up with a serious slab of modern electronic rock.

evil madness has been described as the traveling wilburys of icelandic electronic music. behind the name stand men like petur eyvindsson, johann johannsson, sigtryggur berg sigmarsson, helgi thorsson and bj nilsen (who is not quite icelandic but was born in a country very near iceland). this album, >super great love<, presented by editions mego will be their 4th album since the time their formation in 2006. now for those of you reading who know the music of evil madness will know for sure that this band does what ever they damn well pleases when it comes to making the music. with >super great love< they want to get people in the good mood for the fresh new year and present them with some upbeat icelandic disko tunes.

mark mcguire operates chiefly as guitarist in the legendary emeralds. however he also has racked up an impressive set of solo releases over the last few years (albeit mainly in small to micro print runs). living with yourself is his new album and we at editions mego hope to meet any demand which may arise from this fine selection of modern crafted guitar tunes. focusing on his family, early friendships and the problems that inevitably develop through years of knowing someone, it takes mcguires sound even further out, and contains some his most accomplished songs to date. the opening track is fine example of mcguires magic technique of taking a lone acoustic guitar then transforming the track into bliss-out electro wash looping off into the distance. and tracks like clouds rolling in and brain storm take off where such mcguire classics as the marfa lights (which incidentally is planned for a future reissue) left off. while connoisseurs of his sound will find all they desire in here, many superb surprises await around every corner. these are songs that cruise, bubble and rise to the top.

>a 1000 keys< is a fatal hommage to minimalism and a consequent denial of virtuosity and the idea of creative genius. paraphrasing the romantic idea of human perfection, brinkmann found a way to create sonic algorithms of tenderness and brutality, establishing dramatic expressiveness in his constructivist analytics. the result is of radical beauty.

with a scraggle of noise and feedback zone beginning 26000, ilpo vaeisaenen and dirk dresselhaus continue their angel duo with a work that inhabits its own zone of cryptic anger and contemplation. if anything, a sense of structure destroyed has been the hallmark of both vaeisaenen and mika vainios work away from pan sonic, but 26000 in particular - with angel added and abetted by performers such as oren ambarchi and b.j. nilsen - introduces a sense of unspoken story to the proceedings, a soundtrack to a sci-fi film that emphasizes cosmic horror by implication. the slow roil that -before the rush- settles into, a combination throb and mechanistic growl, both parallels and contrasts the concluding -paradigm shift,- the subtlest of bass rhythms anchoring overlaid drone murk and screeches of noise shaped and controlled like an event horizon reached and held. central piece -dark matter leak- sounds it, deep echoes and distant footsteps and other outer space haunted house noises interspersed with up-front bursts of percussion rattlings and glitches, a robot companion in space rapidly going on the fritz. the overlaid clatter of -in- and similarly frenetic mess of -out- frame said dead center equally excellently.

ex-harry pussy guitarist bill orcutt s 2009 side a new way to pay old debts was an instant classic for those attuned to his brand of stomach-scrapingly raw, hoary blues improvisation. few could have expected the album to be subsequently issued on cd by editions mego, but the more you thought about it the more it made sense - though all-acoustic, orcutt s music is every bit as extreme, violent and threshold-testing as that of, say, florian hecker, russell haswell or mika vainio. as if to prove it wasn t a token gesture towards eclecticism, mego boss peter rehberg has signed a brand new album from orcutt, and what an album it is. for the most part it s in that visceral, coruscating style that he s best known for, all finger-bleeding fretboard assaults that manage to sound at once virtuoso and completely out-of-control, reaching a psychotic climax on the visible bosom: but there are some more reflective passages too, hell, the title track might even be the most chilled thing he s ever recorded. the album was cut at d+m in berlin, which really teases every last drop of blood, sweat and tears out of the recording, which took place at orcutt s home studio in san francisco in spring of 2011. brutal, bludgeoning but incurably romantic, how the thing sings demands your steadfast attention. mind-blowing.
