hailing from sunny los angeles, plastic love records kicks off our first release with an ep from label co-boss jimmy maheras. maheras made his debut in 2011 with his space jam ep on the crosstown rebels edit sub-label, rebellion. since then he s released remixes and singles on strainjjur, riff raff, supernature, and left d. maheras s two original tracks showcase his depth with the man from another place being squarely aimed at the big room dance floor and the second track, arecibo, bringing a little kraftwerkesque funk. we ve commissioned timothy j fairplay (crimes of the future) and cottam (aus music / ruff draft) for two very unique remixes. fairplay crunches down the original melody and throws it over the famed amen break to give tmfap a hands in air late night feel while cottam s remix brings the dreamy melody closer to acid with storming late night kick ready to knock down a wall.

there is a common thread that runs through all of brandt brauer fricks music. it is this: interesting things happen at the interface of machine and hand-made music. the berlin trios 2010 album, *you make me real*, fused techno and classical. the 2011 follow-up, *mr machine*, saw them go the whole classical-meets-club hog with a ten-piece ensemble playing dance music live. then, earlier this year, came *miami*, a darker, more song-based collection exploring the same man-machine ideas. the berlin trios instalment of the dj-kicks series does the same thing with a mix.

the constant state label launches in style with a record from ian blevins & phil moodys al gobi outfit, who had something of a breakthrough 2013 with releases for disco bloodbath, rothmans, culprit la and audio parallax. while the original mix of a cup of tea is dark and unsettled - beautifully balanced bass notes and piano cutting through heavy, storm-pregnant air, cottams accompanying remix is the distillation of a second wind. his tribal, twisted, acidic treatment of this 3am concrete bunker anthem never overwhelms the piano refrain, instead giving it a new life, like the ghost of a party suddenly bequeathed fresh purpose as tired legs find boundless energy.

london-based producer and rinse fm associate rupert taylor, aka xxxy, has announced his second release for the rinse label, featuring a pair of characteristically melody soaked, floor ready house tracks. it is the follow up to 2013s incendiary club hit *got me so*, and is the latest in a series of releases from taylor exploring ghostly house and garage for labels including infrasonics, ten thousand yen and orca.

2011 system was started as a platform for underground music in minneapolis. after many club, warehouse, and livestream events system is now launching a record label for 2014. behind you is the debut release from system records. there will be a small 250 piece run of white vinyl inside record jackets designed and hand printed by local minneapolis artists.

the last few years have seen chicago footwork rise to international success, and traxmans debut album - *the mind of traxman* on planet mu - played no small part in that. it showcased cornelius fergusons brilliant ability to synthesise the beat digging of classic hip hop with the high-speed abstraction of footworks house-derived beat science. the selection of tracks on this second chapter show a slightly different take on traxman s abilities. instead of bringing in concepts from other genres, he simply creates a wider variety of footwork, made with a minimal, reduced palette. often just one or two samples are selected and diced into brain-blurring cubist puzzles that bear little relation to their original sources, or anything else for that matter.

as ljudverket is a heavily art-influenced label, the second release was made as a part of an sound installation for an exhibition in helsinki. rasmus hedlund & tuomo väänänens 2x12 inch album consists of 80 locked groove loops, 20 on each side. the installation itself holds 4 vinyl players, where every side of the records are represented as a sound source, from where the participators could themselves choose a random loop and thus create their own soundscapes. this is one for the collectors, and no more than 200 copies are being produced.

martin lewis, the insane house kid from berlin is breaking bad with his new and massive “rewind ep” on freebase records. with his first strike “believer” he delivers a flat footed house banger with a grumpy bassline, flavoured with an hypnotizing vocal sample. the second track “ breaking bad”, a genuine groove tool, is also influenced by martins garage credo. sublime melody riffs are competing with a wiggling bassline. tuff city kids, aka gerd janson and phillip lauer come up with two mind- boggling remixes of “believer”. at the “acid remix” they take out their breaky 90s acid drumset. this one is dry, jacking and sophisticatedly tribal. the “tuff city kids remix” starts with desert- dry acid elements which grow up to an uplifting acid soundwall. a true “jack in the box”.
