word of advice to funk lovers, there is not a minute to lose. get on board of the big hustle�s spaceship. before we take off, let s do a little history. the band was founded in 2014 by bass player and composer sébastien levanneur and its aim is to bring together 70 s old school funk with the hippest actual sound laced with influences spanning from steely dan and headhunters, to snarky puppy and soulive. with mighty horn players, a rock and funky rhythm section, the big hustle s music has a very large variety of soundscapes. the first destination takes us to the washington, d.c. area with �turn up�. the groove is clearly go-go music flavored with the trademark sound of cowbells and of course it reminds us of zapp by the use of the talk box on lead vocals, performed here by saad el garrab. and don t miss out shaun martin (snarky puppy, erykah badu, kirk franklin amongst others) as a very special guest performing the talk box solo! second stop is �a curse, a blessing�. it�s an instrumental very much in the freddie hubbard vein during his cti years. the last leg of the a side ends with an instrumental interlude titled �flying donut�. double tribute to jay dee and flying lotus, the music is a simple hip hop loop based on samples. the b side takes us back into the past with two brilliant covers, involving rod temperton the late great british songwriter who scored some of michael jackson s biggest hits. now the idea for this b side is to do the opposite approach from the a side. taking 70 s and 80 s original music and make them travel into time to 2018. we first land with a heatwave song named �the star of a story� from their 1976 central heating album. track 2 is a herbie hancock song named �gettin to the good part� from his 1982 lite me up lp. this time traveler ep journey ends with an interlude. called �gimme dat�, the song deals with the need of new music, new sound. again, this blend of deep rooted funk laced with a contemporary edge is to be consumed without moderation. and do not forget that e.p. also stands for extended pleasure.

coletivo vandalismo kick-start a new 12inch series for the contort yourself label. hailing from the city of porto the duo also dj under the name gam and released their debut lp on lake haze s eye for an eye label. their music has an immediacy that seems to stem from a background in live performance as opposed to polished studio sessions - an improvisational punk aesthetic that manages to carry this ep so strongly. wild, crashing fx and unrecognisable vocal distortions layer atop wonky 90bpm drum machine grooves and the pair even show off what may be their turntablism skills on zombie zombie. theres a nod to early concrete on the closing track black suns demise with whirring, mechanical noise motifs suddenly jolting us into punishing gabber-at-33-minus-8 territory. the diy spirit is alive and well here and the feeling that things could fall apart at any minute just adds to the tension.

those wizards of digging psychemagik doing the business once again. hot on the heels of last year s monstrous gotta hold on me / wildman they re letting folks know that they were still out there searching in the darkest recesses of the last 40+ years of popular and unpopular music, and boy oh boy are they good at it! the trip lives up to it s name. the track kicks off with some ultra beefed up psychedelic shenanigans, swirling, cacophonous sounds whirl and sweep and gradually drag us into the holographic tunnel, gradually giving way to some heavyweight drums and percussions and unfurling into a muscular psych-discoid beast. this one will send the kids crazy and will undoubtedly cause some damage in the club, both sonically and mentally. but what is the original? we hear you say... answers on a postcard please. sisters of the moon on the flip-side is a very different animal - all laid back, laconic steel-guitars and thundering slo-mo drums and percussion. the dark side of a rural witchcraft dream exposed here, almost menacing... and then? those vocals spring out of the mix amidst the throbbing sexually charged atmosphere and drag us back into the realm of near reality with sultry moans and groans. this one s woozy alright, but in the best possible way. so wrong, it s right and possibly the natural soundtrack to too many of those strange shots that that guy in the weird hat gave us earlier when we entered that country pub. what guy? i hear you ask.... ultimate freak-disco and deepest druid funk for the discerning and psychedelically inclined record consumer.

four tracks of ny-flavoured boogie and house goodness - quality is the key word from copenhagen based music for dreams and here is another home run. willie graff splits his year between dj residencies in new york and ibiza. in this new outing with studio partner darren eboli, the influence is, as the title suggests, clearly ny-based. over only four tracks, the pair manage to craft a stunningly comprehensive exploration of the essential elements of dance music. opening track -love flight- staggers into a lush string-driven groove that recalls the glory of metro area meets wally badarou vibes. minimal yet playful, it lounges somewhere in the depths of the house tradition, calling on familiar sounds while throwing in odd details along the way (harmonicas?). it takes both skill, devotion and a sense of humor to pull this track off, making for a strong opening. -moon tan- lingers on a metallic hook that drags you into a plethora of percussion followed by a rubbery soft baseline. dubby key work would suggest this was a new wave band jamming at compass point, while the icy chill of the xylophone transports you into 80s italo territory. -second sun- pulls out the bag of boogie tricks, relying on a firm but humble baseline and smattering drum machine claps. nile rodgers-style guitar licks guide us onwards into a well-orchestrated jam that builds up and breaks down with perfect timing while dreamy chords reach for the sky. -first light- keeps the groove tight while dipping over towards more balearic temperatures. steeped in a watery atmosphere and gentle organic percussion, it focuses in on a trance-inducing arpeggio that lulls you in to the swaying badarou-style synth swirls that intercept it.

jaki liebezeit, der masterdrummer, hatte seine freude an der tatsache, dass der trommelbau seit menschengedenken sich nicht wesentlich verändert hat. ob ein fell jetzt mit schnüren oder mit schrauben auf dem kessel gespannt wird, ob es ein natur- oder plastikfell ist - das prinzip bleibt dasselbe: beide umschließen einen hohlraum, ohne den es keinen klang gäbe (man stelle sich eine trommel vor, die innen drin mit lehm gefüllt wäre.) so ähnlich ist auch die rhythmus-auffassung. das Überflüssige fällt weg. dir leere mitte erscheint. das unsichtbare ist das entscheidende. alle stücke auf der zweiten ep von drums off chaos kreisen um diese leere mitte. im zentrum ist - nichts. hier geht es um abstrakte, groovende trommel-musik. die rhythmen sind so weit auf ihren elementaren kern reduziert, dass sie zwar eindeutig singulär, aber auch allgemeingütig verstanden werden können. es kommt etwas zum vorschein, das allgemeinen gesetzen wie gravitation, ergonomik und akustik folgt. �spiel, was die trommel will,� war einer von jakis sätzen. das hat drums off chaos sich mit ihm zusammen zu herzen genommen. im zentrum stehen rhythmen, die auf einfachen zahlenverhälnissen gründen, um ihren reichtum aus sich selbst heraus zu entfalten.

khalab has arrived onthecorner with �zaire�. �zaire� is the beginning of a new narrative for the artist. in this first chapter khalab creates urgent compositions with layers of sound from the past, present and future. �zaire� is underpinned by an intensely pounding heart of other-worldly percussion. the collaged loops frenetically jab in syncopation breaking off when the inherent swing casts its discrete groove to summon the dance. unrelenting waves of synthlines, basslines and rhythm find harmony amongst the melodic chants and distortion.

chicago damn is the latest esteemed producer to shore up at marcel vogel s intimate friends label, following the hypoleon ep with some forthright, sample heavy funk house concoctions that nod to his other work on wolf music and the like. -bunny hoppin- is a rowdy but soulful belter with a peppy tempo and an addictive line in looped up samples, while -flush- takes things slower and dustier without getting too lost in the undergrowth. -the truth- lays its samples out in bold, bright brushstrokes with a pattering, psyched out undercurrent for deeper, sunkissed moments, and then -tipsy- finishes the ep off in a playful tryst of re-pitched piano trills and scuffed beats.
