am 21. september erscheint das neue, vierte villagers album the art of pretending to swim. nach der zurückgenommenen, intimen atmosphäre des vorgängers darling arythmetic (2015), auf dem sich die zeitlosen singles courage und everything i am is yours befanden, verfolgt das neue album ein vielschichtigeres, facettenreicheres konzept, wie man es schon von conor o’briens debütalbum becoming a jackal (2010) und dessen nachfolger {awayland} (2013) kennt. eine gute prise soul, ein intelligenter rhythmus und ein umwerfendes spektrum akustischer details, analog wie digital, erzeugen eine hoch emotionale stimmung mit überaus eingängigen melodien. fein austariert, mit raffinierten perspektiven und songtexten, die die existentiellen Ängste und hoffnungen in einem eher hoffnungslosen, dystopischen, von technik bestimmten zeitalter umarmen, ist the art of pretending to swim das bislang wohl am opulentesten ausgestattete und beschwingteste album von villagers. das album wurde von conor o’ brien in seinem studio in dublin geschrieben, produziert, gemischt und zu großen teilen auch eingespielt.

stephen malkmus und seine band haben in über 17 jahren 6 alben veröffentlicht und sich auf unzähligen touren zu einer konstante der us-amerikanischen indie-rock-landschaft entwickelt. auch auf seinem siebten album, “sparkle hard”, zeigt malkmus keinerlei kreative ermüdungserscheinungen, sondern bietet klassische stephen-malkmus-songs mit unwiderstehlicher subkultureller strahlkraft. schon 2015 begann malkmus mit der arbeit an “sparkle hard”. damals gönnte er seinem heimstudio ein technisches update, kaufte elektronische drums und arbeitete gleichzeitig an der musik für die netflix-serie “flaked”, für die er unter anderem den song für den abspann schrieb. alle demos für “sparkle hard” wurden an einem tag im april 2017 aufgenommen und nur einen monat später zusammen mit den jicks in portland im neuen studio halfling aufgenommen. letzteres gehört dem the decemberists-multiinstrumentalisten chris funk, der “sparkle hard” auch produzierte. als gast konnte malkmus kim gordon (sonic youth) gewinnen, die mit ihm das duett für den song “refute” einsang. schwarze heavyweight lp mit zweiseitigem insert und mp3-downloadkarte.

julia holter eröffnet mit dem live-album -in the same room- eine reihe, der zu ehren domino ein neues sublabel ins leben gerufen hat. domino documents wird, in anlehnung an die legendären peel sessions der bbc, studio-aufnahmen seiner künstler veröffentlichen, die innerhalb eines tages, niemals mehr als zweier tage unter live-bedingungen in einem londoner weltklasse-studio aufgenommen werden. der erste offizielle documents release ist nach einem song von julia holters domino debüt -ekstatsis- benannt. diese neue, karriere umspannende sammlung ist das ergebnis aus zwei tagen arbeit, die julia holter nach ihrem auftritt beim letztjährigen green man festival mit band in den rak studios geleistet hat.

pavement und preston school of industry gründungsmitglied scott kanneberg aka spiral stairs veröffentlicht ein neues album auf domino records! es sind nun acht jahre vergangen, seit scott kannberg, seines zeichens gründungsmitglied der legendären pavement, sein solo-album the real feel veröffentlichte. in der zwischenzeit ist vieles passiert. von einer gefeierten pavement reunion bis hin zum ausbau seines familienlebens in australien war alles dabei. jetzt meldet sich der gitarrist als spiral stairs mit einem neuen album zurück. “doris & the daggers” wird es heißen und zehn rock songs enthalten. am schlagzeug sitzt justin peroff (broken social scene), am bass hat sich matt harris eingefunden, der schon seit der gemeinsamen band preston school of industry mit kannberg musiziert. als gastsänger sind matt berninger (the national) und kevin drew (broken social scene) mit dabei. scott kannberg über sein zweites album: “i guess i’ve been writing songs for a while now. i like hearing echoes of things i love in the music that i make. writing music doesn’t come easy to me - it’s hard to write a song that’s good. but our memories slowly escape us as we get older, and in songs you kind of relive those moments, the things that matter.”

the album was written, produced, and distributed in garys hometown baltimore, between 1986 and 1987. after a break from performing while getting belated college degrees, gary returned to performing in the early 21st century, back to the singer/songwriter style of his past. gary feels that the generic art ensemble/original soundtrack days gave him an ability to open up his writing. his recent albums feature guitar, but many songs do have keyboards added to give them a fuller, less folky sound.
