Ewan Smith has been making a name for himself with his deep, dozy and ever so slightly melancholy take on house. He’s already slated remixes for Maya Jane Coles, Midland, Dusky & the elusive Gerry Read as well as original EPs for Hype, and Secretsundaze and now makes his Simple debut with a four-track EP titled - ‘What’s The Deal?’. The EP highlights Ewan’s attention to detail whether that be with the pitch-shifted vocal samples coupled with shuffling melodic flourishes in ‘What’s The Deal’ or whether it’s a more patient groovier number like ‘Just Words’ which adopts the less is more approach, focusing on a classy bassline, a few drawn out synth chords and sweet vocal snippets. ‘You Don’t Know’ combines Ewan’s trademark vocal snippets once again but this time with Mike Huckaby esque synth licks, this is probably the deepest jam on the ep and Ewan’s not afraid to take a nod to those from the D(etroit). ‘You Tired’ rounds off the EP, and illustrates Ewan’s deft touch by combining a heavy, groovy bassline and lush, subtle piano flourishes. Youandewan is only getting going and this EP perfectly showcases his sound. With gigs this summer at Hideout, Unknown and Echo festivals, Trouble Vision as well as several appearances at our very own Aus Music and Simple Records parties, we think 2013 is going to be a fine year for Ewan.[txt from ]
