On Side A, we feature the Les Ya Toupas Du Zaire’s ’Je Ne Bois Pas Beaucoup’, an epic dancefloor beast from Zaire and a firm Sofrito DJ favourite during the last year. Comprising members of celebrated group Zaiko Langa Langa and involving the maestro Sam Mangwana as producer, Les Ya Toupas Du Zaire only ever recorded a handful of records. This track was released in Benin on the small Editions MY label during the late ‘70s and is a masterclass in heavy soukous. Featured on the Sofrito: Tropical Discotheque’ compilation, this is the first chance for DJs to grab the cut on an ultraloud 12“ pressing. On Side B, Sofrito dig out a great Lord Shorty cut from 1976 which appeared on his own label in Trinidad and, later, on Brooklyn label Charlie’s as part of Shorty’s ’Sweet Soca Music’ album. Lord Shorty a.k.a. Ras Shorty I is considered as the father of soca – his 1973 hit ’Indrani’ is widely accepted as the first record of the genre. ’Sweet Music’ takes us into disco crossover territory, riding an infectious Caribbean bump ’n’ hustle groove and Sofrito subtly extend all the right parts to create another essential dancefloor weapon.
