G. Family really is family. Pretoria-born cousins Michael G and Jullian Gomes make the kind of deep and emotive house music that befits their close-knit relationship. New Foliage cut People With Bullets is no exception; the track finally hitting a wider audience after its triumphant release early last year on key South African label Soul Candi.

People With Bullets is subtle and melancholic but ultimately empowering four-to-the-floor, its lulling percussive rhythms skimmed by gentle, free-wheeling jazz keys and Nombongo's assured spoken word vocals. Reflections on the 'struggles of life' in a 'tainted world', where violence needs to make way for peace, love and respect, gain significant gravitas played as they are beneath such sunken, introspective dancefloor production.

Inventive German producer Manuel Tur masterminds an exclusive Foliage remix, his enlivened drums the perfect fit for exhilarating Vangelis-like swells of synth and stylish acid wiggle. It's an epic, multi-layered, impressively crafted re-build, able to take Nombongo in a wholly confident new direction.

There is also room for two other G.Family tracks, both of which are taken from the duo's latest album Deep House Chronicles 6. The Guest is soul of the darkest, murkiest hue, subterranean beats and sluggish melodic shifts providing warm, mainline intoxication whilst DJs For Free grooves consummately over a funky, flanged, increasingly key-stabbed backing.

G and Gomes made their studio debut as G.Family in 2007 after years of DJing separately in South Africa. The pair's steadily building reputation, in line with their homeland's burgeoning status as one of house music's most exciting new frontiers, has led to work on a number of influential house labels and now Foliage. G.Family's People With Bullets EP mines a rich and truly expansive seam of sound – deeply involved, agenda-setting dance with which, appropriately, to begin the New Year.
