Christer Bothén’s artistry transcends genre, tradition, and even the tangible. A key figure in avant-garde jazz and global improvisation, he has spent decades exploring sound’s spiritual depth. From playing in Don Cherry’s groundbreaking Organic Music Society to leading expansive projects, Bothén has embraced the unknown, continuously reshaping his musical language.
At 83, Bothén remains deeply engaged, crafting L’invisible, a trio album with vibraphonist Kjell Nordeson and bassist Kansan Zetterberg. This work draws on a lifetime of sonic exploration, blending vibraphone’s shimmering overtones with the earthy resonance of the bass clarinet. Themes emerge and dissolve as the trio improvises with deep trust and fluidity, conjuring dreamlike textures that move between meditative stillness and surging intensity. Bothén’s affinity for the bass clarinet-vibraphone pairing stems from formative listening experiences, including Eric Dolphy’s Out to Lunch. The rich reverb is an echo of another of Bothén's heroes: Earl Bostic. But his influences run deep, from Gnawa traditions to experimental European improvisation. He incorporates techniques like playing inside the piano, creating percussive, unpredictable textures.
Still evolving, still searching, Bothén continues to shape music that is as elusive as it is essential, inviting listeners to embrace the mystery.[info sheet from distr.]
