Born in Spanish Harlem to Puerto Rican immigrants, Louis Antonio Castro inherited his voice from musicians on both sides of his family. Latin music was the predominant choice in the Castro household, but Louis was also inspired by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dinah Washington, Nat King Cole and even Argentinean Tango singers.

To avoid association with the famous Cuban leader, Castro switched to the stage name, Tony Amaro, for much of his career. He also released a few 45s too, the most notable being the unmistakable W.E.L.F.A.R.E. on his own Universal International label. Recorded sometime around 1970 and with just a few hundred copies pressed up, the song laments the difficulties of a man in Spanish Harlem who attempts to hold onto his dignity through times of poverty.

This rare and highly sought-after 45 is in great demand from both funksters after something a bit more heart rendering, and soulies who want something a bit more rhythmical.
