Minus 113 introduces a pair of artists who are new to the label. Jake & Amber met while studying advanced hemp-weaving at Colorado Springs Community College. Their shared passion for baked goods led them to open a pastry shop in northern New Hampshire, called Hot Drippin Biscuits. In their free time Jake was discovering the hallucinogenic traditions of his Native American heritage (he’s 1/8th Comanche) while Amber worked on inspiring gender dysphoria among the locals. But they were unfulfilled until they discovered electronic music by way of a Steve Rachmad CD flying through their car window one summer evening. Deciding that it was the perfect music for dolphins and other sea creatures, they set about making water-tank soundtracks for flippered beat-friends at the local aquarium. With a bit of modest success (porpoises squeaking “ultimo!” after each song) they decided to move to Kensucket County Florida to work at Ocean World. A chance visit to the Orcas in Paradise show by Richie Hawtin changed their fate. He immediately signed his favorite multi-porpoise hits and introduced them to the next chapter of their lives. Now Jake & Amber spend their days tuning 909s to elicit responses from thought-impaired Europeans instead of their underwater cousins. “Teenpop” is exactly what it sets out to be: a lush mating call for speedy slabs of grey, wet meat (we’re talking about dolphins). With a rolling bassline that undulates like waves when the shark tank is ‘arockin, the track sets out with deep, penetrating thickness. Punctuated by gasping vocal stabs and quirky percussion, one can imagine teen mammals of all species clapping their appendages in appreciation. The track hits its apex with a vicious breakdown, jarring enough to wake any comatose raver from his underwater doldrums, only to rock back into place like an orca who has just snatched a small child from the audience and returned to the depths for a snack. “Mine” is a much deeper affair.
