As a taster, this is a splendid DJ friendly 12inch that makes a pretty good attempt to capture the spirit of the Chair in just 3 tracks.

The first track is something very special……

Joubert Singers (or Celestial Choir?) ‘Stand on the Word’ has become topical again with the controversy surrounding the Keedz cover version that’s blowing up at the moment (is it Justice in disguise? Or has someone deliberately made sure everyone thinks it’s Justice? etc.). This track was re-released recently on the LARRY bootleg series as LARRY002 and is a superb end of the night rejoicing moment .Originally recorded live in the First Baptist Church in Crown Heights, New York City, in 1982 and pressed only for the congregation, Walter Gibbons (owner of Jus Born studios and a new born Christian at the time of the recording) acquired a copy and played it out at the 7th Avenue. Rock & Soul shop where he worked. This was the place where most discerning DJs and soulful dance music aficionados picked up on this new sound, and it quickly became a Garage, Loft and Zanzibar club classic, championed by Larry Levan, David Mancuso and others.

No strutting and preening from SUAD’s 1995 conscious anthem ‘Black Men United’. Just raw, undiluted, roughneck hip hop. Rare as hens’ teeth on vinyl and an Electric Chair favourite from the early days. This as much sums up the sweaty, hedonistic, funk fuelled spirit of the Electric Chair as Wang’s disco or Joubert’s exultant gospel.
