a generation younger than the founders of the teklife crew, dj rashad and dj spinn, dj taye was originally a rapper and beat maker before hooking up with the collective and jumping headfirst into the world of footwork production, dancing and djing. however, it was rashad’s untimely passing in 2014 that was the unlikely catalyst for developing the sounds and ideas for this album.

the underdogg is the title of dj tre’s debut ep for hyperdub. he had two brilliant tracks featured on our dj rashad tribute compilation next life, but compared to other longterm members of the teklife footwork crew, he hasn’t released much, so we’re very happy to bring him out to play again here. tre has been about since the early days, born and raised on the south side of chicago. encouraged by the late dj rashad and his partner dj spinn, he has been making tracks since 1999, over a decade before footwork’s ascent to global popularity. on this ep his sound, for the most part is rooted in the speedy 4/4 of juke. it features a sparse and minimalist take on footwork but he’s got a knack of adding in tight little switches and details that keep the tracks moving as essential dance floor weapons.

12inch whitelabel, limited to 300 hand stamped and numbered copies, coverartwork by utramoodem. schockglatze is the distillate of a longstanding collaboration between artists working across the frontiers of several forms. with audio- visual performances, band projects and international exhibitions as part of their armoury, spõnk, nik nowak and moritz stumm have been causing a stir within the art and music worlds for years. spõnk has already cooperated with a range of acclaimed vocalists including warrior queen, sensational and christoph waltz. he forms the solid basis and is the sonic central nervous system (scns) for the studio productions of schockglatze. nik nowak, most notably through his sound tank or ôpanzerö (2011), has in recent years worked closely with musicians such as (the late) dj rashad and dj spinn, and sonic poly-math the bug. last but not least moritz stumm aka ultramoodem, who brings to schockglatze an inimitable rhythmicity and graphic dimension. as a graphic artist, vj and video director he created a singular technique of synergetic audio-visual effects redolent of a hyper-voodooism, the aesthetic of which has become a signature style of schockglatze. the warlord ep showcases their various influences and is only a taste of the sound from éheart of the mandelbulbÆ and includes a remix by hyperdubÆs ikonika

the 6613 ep from dj rashads vaults will be released just over a year after his untimely passing, with all the proceeds going to his family. some of these songs will be familiar to anyone who saw rashad dj.

the second of the decadub vinyl-only releases dedicates three of its four sides to a volley of woozy and twisted footwork from most of the key members of chicagos teklife crew.

william kouam djoko returns to voyage direct with deflourished. after a year with a lot of high highs and some deep lows, william found himself on the dance floor listening to a set by chicago footwork specialists dj rashad & dj spinn.

lil jabba isnt like the rest of them. while they are busy joining the dots between house and techno or whatever is safe right now, he is throwing paint all over the page. he is not american, but he is affiliated with chicagos teklife crew (dj spinn, dj rashad, etc.) and divides his time between baltimore and brooklyn, exhibiting his visual art, riding around with his bike gang and making some of the most hypnotic juke and footwork you will ever hear. local action have been figuring out a release with him for over a year - eventually an ep wasnt enough, and they persuaded him to make it a full-length album, scales. some of scales has already seen the light of day through youtube or limited cassette releases, some of it is unheard. some tracks sound cleaner than others, that is because they are newer. that is how these things work. what is consistent throughout scales is the quality: across 12 tracks, jabba flips, twists and inverts the footwork template with endless layers of samples, gurgled vocal tags, jazz licks and whatever else he feels like. these arent trax, they are tapestries.

dj rashad has been instrumental to the creation and evolution of chicago juke music and has been lifelong friends with other key players on the scene, such as paul johnson, dj gant-man, dj spinn, dj godfather, and jammin gerald.

viennas disko404 organisation are launching their very own label with a split ep by sun people and franjazzco. while the latter is one of the most passionate players in viennas underground music scene, sun people aka simon/off has already stirred international attention with releases on renowned labels such as immerse records or phuture shock musik. for this release franjazzco combined his enthusiasm for jazz, soul and disco with a weighty footwork / juke kit, resulting in three deadly 160bpm anthems.
on the flipside sun people deployed a more uk-influenced style with references to 90s jungle and uk garage … imagine tek9 meets duncan powell meets dj spinn.
the ep is already receiving support from dj rashad, distal, dj clent, rp boo, soulphiction and others, and is just the first of many floor-dominator releases lined up by disko404. super-limited run of 250 copies only.

the ghettoteknitianz are a formidable clique of footwork djs who count rashad and spinn (who have previously released eps on mu) among their members, as well as veterans such as traxman, gant-man and younger producers like dj manny and dj earl.

>bussin down< is the first planet mu single from chrissy murderbot, who comes with a style inspired by his chosen city of chicagos juke and footwork scenes. he playfully mixes in elements of other styles of music he loves, such as rnb and dancehall, to create lively mutations with a warm hearted mass appeal that comfortably straddles genres. >bussin down< features chicago footwork supremo dj spinn over some tasty footwork tracks featuring spinns instructional lyrics, over some high speed jazz funk and cracking claps and klaviers. next track >braaain< is a unique amalgam of footwork with the classic early digital sleng teng bassline. the blend works fantastically, as chrissy slides the originals vocal in and out of the mix in a dub style. on the b-side atki2 takes album track >the vibe is so right< featuring vocals from mc zulu and runs it through a lush treatment that mixes detroit washes with tight, laidback, rolling funky house drums, to instant classic effect. on b2, chicago footwork pioneers djs rashad and spinn send the originals vocal into a whirl of complex delays and layered loops over cold drums and hard techno stabs. just the faintest taste of what is in store on the m-bots incredible >womens studies< album due soon on planet mu.
