for the past two decades, ivan smagghe has perfected the art of making spaced-out clubbers dance, has ridden a fine line and run his label les disques de la mort. rupert cross is a london-based composer who has worked with michael finissy and julian anderson as well as writing music for television and theatre. before/after ma, an album which sat on the fringes of experimental music passed through an industrial particle accelerator. s&c give you the tracks codenamed timothy dalton (according to ivan, the laser sound in the track reminded us of flash gordon). neither pop, nor psychedelic, nor ambient, nor house, nor techno, nor post punk nor even new wave are spared, but none are singled out. to nurture this proto-album, the duo also called upon the talents of tim felton, the outstanding guitarist from the cult band broadcast.

dalton war eine tunesische band. gegründet in den frühen 70ern, waren sie teil einer neuen musikszene in tunis, welche sich sowohl aus westlichen wie auch aus regionalen einflüssen speiste. alech war das einzige release der gruppe und wurde 1972 in italien aufgenommen und als privatpressung veröffentlicht. die wiederveröffentlichung ist von der band lizensiert und die erste platte auf dem neuen jakarta sub-label habibi funk, welches sich auf veröffentlichungen aus der arabischen welt fokussieren wird.

the beacon crowns ashurst hill in dalton, lancashire, looming over the verdant english countryside nearly six hundred feet above sea level. this spartan brick monolith was erected in 1798 as a watch tower to warn of french invasion during the napoleonic war — & there it silently remains, keeping infinite vigil. it stands in tess roby’s mind. the beacon calls to her. “throughout my life i have felt the pull to return to it,” she says. “i’m beckoned by father’s roots & by the sullen landscape of fields leading to the coast.”

anglo-cherokee-japanese skateboarder turned musician korey dane returns with his second album chamber girls. influenced by the likes of t.s. eliot, tom waits, karen dalton, the beatles and the stones, and more, chamber girls was recorded almost completely live at l.a.’s analog time capsule valentine recording studios, searing instinct and experience direct to tape. dane produced everything himself, too, except for a quick assist from legendary producer tony berg (x, public image ltd.) on one song, and he was inspired by the deceptively simple ethos he’d internalized while making youngblood: pursue greatness. “writing a song that you know someone might skip over later is sacrilege,” he says. instead, he wanted every song on chamber girls to feel not only live but alive, too, with that go-forbroke spirit that animates everything he says, does, or sings: “i’m writing all the time,” he says. “i’ve lived by a line a day sometimes. i try and stop when it’s good. if you try and simplify it down to its bare elements ... it’s truly a redemptive act.”

carthago wurde in den späten 1970er jahren als eine fusion von dalton und einer zweiten band namens marhaba band gegründet. beide bands spielten häufig in hotels und nachtclubs in tunis und sousse. musikalisch wandelte carthago auf dem musikalischen pfad von dalton und marhaba weiter, nahm jedoch disco-musik-einflüsse auf, die damals aus europa und nordamerika auch nach nordafrika durchdrangen. die ep enthält neben den raren originalen auch die unveröffentlichten instrumentals und erscheint mit einem 8-seitigen booklet sowie mp3-download-coupon.

the fourth release on dont be afraid >west acyd shelter< takes one of the most important jazz funk records of the 1970s as its starting point. semtek rebuilds the legendary hook from scratch over a disorienting range of acid, broken and techno accoutrements leaving a tweaked out bassline stepper. photonz bring their unique lisbon via essex style to the proceedings with an >i cant believe its not garage< take on semteks beat, proving yet again that they are a force to be reckoned with in 2011. the b-side >east acyd shelter< is a sparse analogue workout that would be at home as much in legendary and much missed kings cross hangout the key, as it would in a james bond soundtrack of the timothy dalton era.

our man francesco grant from italy returns to the mothership with four funky-as-hell tech-house tunes and sure floorfillers on his revolution ep ! he produces his own unique style of cut-ups, field recordings, sampling and packs all into nice kickin? percussions and basslines. his first two releases already made quite an impact on the scene with his still selling first great release body work and his second organic ep.

twisted tongue follow up their acclaimed debut album with the first single from their follow-up lp, >a return to space<. eschewing the p-funk stylings of their self-titled debut, twisted tongue (dave jay & mark dalton) provide an essential revival of the mid-tempo soul stepper, featuring guest vocalist johanna lee sweetly leading a tough, incessant groove that recalls the classic likes of nick martinelli and the mizell brothers. twisting the track even further are the remixes provided by dj ray mang (dfa, mangled), one of the founders of londons nu-disco scene, who has long taken inspiration from new yorks golden era of the loft and paradise garage. twisted tongue writer/producer dave jay joined forces with ray for his >mang vs. mondo< ep on mangled earlier this year, and here mang returns the favour by dubbing out and extending >a return to space< to mind-bending effect. on the flipside is the cinematic, downtempo remix by blue states, which subtly subverts the original, transforming the track into a late night indie excursion. andy dragazis (blue states) has now been delivering his unique brand of melancholy, guitar-led head music for over decade, via labels such as xl recordings, and this mix of >a return to space< ranks up there with his most memorable work

here comes the next biggie: shake it is the result of a cooperation between kid massive who already worked for labels like slip n slide, gossip, realbasic, stoney boy & rootz) and beatchuggers (toolroom, slip n slide, silocasa). on the a-side, theres a remix by labelchief raul rincon, who adds some banging latin beats and a saxophone to deliver again a remix as funky as hell! on the flip side, you will find the original mix with a more electronic bassline and a mix by bryan dalton (toolroom, fame, work) who works closer to the original adding some nice warm synth sounds. your crowd will shake it!!!

island people is a new band project consisting of mastering engineer conor dalton, grammy award winning producer david donaldson, and musician and dj graeme reedie. on their first self- titled record, they present their collaborative work that evolved over the past three years. being based in different cities, namely berlin and glasgow, files had to be exchanged back and forth between the three band members in order to create tracks. for their delicate sound structures, field recordings and other sound sources were heavily processed and rendered unrecognizable. layer after layer, the tracks came into being quiet naturally, not only reflecting their continuous way of working, but also incorporating their different and individual backgrounds: Òduring the whole creation of the album, we never realized our actions were quickly leading us into forming Èisland peopleÇ, we were too busy having fun, making music and sharing ideas.Ó the result of their collaboration is a timeless music that is as open as a natural phenomenon, developing a certain feeling of euphoria over time. all in all, Èisland peopleÇ is a pure listening record in the best tradition of ambient.
