midnight moves. thats what comes to mind when you listen to cale parks s n1, preferably at an hour long after dusk has settled around you in some beautiful, insomniac city. parks finds – or more aptly, seeks – beauty and grace in ambience and shadows. n1 starts as pure atmosphere – it feels at first like a sort of lovely sonic nothingness slowly taking form – before growing into the darkly lit, gorgeous moodscape it later becomes. a sensual bassline, a pulsing downbeat, a cinematic piano, strains of italo disco, and the sensation of breezing down a lightless road. if you could make sensuous shapes of the night – imagine kneading the dark itself – it might, at the very best, feel like this. the task of remixing parks s original is taken up by french duo paradis, who can otherwise be heard making music on tim sweeney s beats in space label. the paris-based producers shine a brightening light on parks s dusky creation, quickening its pulse and trading in its darkwave undercurrents for enlivening techno and house. theres an element of floating here – a dreaminess in the rhythms, an astral aspect to the keys beaming through the beats. and with the addition of vocals, sung in french – a pop finishing touch on a song that already feels like an earworm – the transformation is complete. this excellent introduction to cale parkss music is also his debut release on the hakt label.

having surfaced with a few potted releases in the mid-nineties, my love is underground have taken it upon themselves to call upon las teflon dons to reissue three punchy lessons in that currently most mined of house music eras. theres no arguing with the authenticity of a track like planet eater, as the subby bass and pounding drums take the lead with just subtle dabs of noise and samples chilling in the background. sun fist rising has a more rounded atmosphere, leaning on layers of keys and a classic garage shuffle for a sweet and soulful end result, while psycho ray gets on a darker tip with creepy vocal samples and moody organ bass

as the title suggests the new before the show album depicts beginnings and endings. we believe that life has many different beginnings and endings, and that the various journeys we take from one beginning to one end are filled with detours – and it is these detours which continually shape and define us as the people we are. musically years&years&years picks up where hearts and heads left off, however, it has developed towards a bigger and more complex sound image. it can best be described as a combination of sting and peter gabriel on one hand, and smashing pumpkins and radiohead on the other.

while the first release on wania, busen & paleos >stream of love< (featuring dj sotofetts anthemic overdub-12inchedit) was a rather leftfield affair, dritfett is aimed more directly towards the dancefloor. the label artwork gives a clear clue as to what this release is all about: amongst a number of cryptic messages and shout-outs in norwegian - a tr-909 logo. all the tracks here are based around the 909 - thunderous kickdrums and sharp, hissing hi-hats that cut through the mix. still, theres a broad range of sounds, from head-down, fists-clenched warehouse workouts with an industrial edge, to more melodic tracks with detroit references aplenty. make no mistake though: this is all about the power of the almighty 909. theres no fancy tricks here‚ no ableton-trickery or polished waveforms, just good honest techno with a real raw live feel. this gives the tracks the energy and spontaneity that is sorely missed in many of todays productions. the kind of energy you will find - in abundance - in the house and techno releases of the 90s. the kind of energy that can only be achieved by pressing play on a machine, frenetically twisting knobs and punching buttons while letting the energy of the room decide where to go next.

on sat002 lovework/decisions, black light smoke shows off his pop sensibilities with two sing-a-long summer anthems-in-the-making. lovework is a no-wave-inspired ditty littered with catchy analog synths, an ass-shakin bassline and reverbed claps juxtapozed with a haunting processed vocal from the producer himself that repeats, >you made a mess of my head. now i gotta put it all back together. theres nothing to say, over and over…< which is how this tune will be playing in your head after one listen. on the flip we get a taste of black light smoke in deep house mode with decisions, a lustrous and vibey joint that features a sweeter vocal by suavecito, a new guise of dj/producer and vocalist who is well known by another name. here more analog synths produce wickedly buoyant bass lines and swirling pads that combine with bubbly piano stabs and little vocal sample/edits for what sounds like it could have been a naked music release had the label been operating in 1990.

easy changes supposed dolls ep is a welcome slice of audio that remains in the sweet spot between clubby-booty-shake and avant-garde-sound-grenade. theres more emphasis on acoustic tones as the sound sources for their audio bending activities. the added acoustic richness is in the service of easy changes love of abstract texture, and heightens a sense of almost tribal funk. will mix in and blow minds.

we re not sure if theres been a whole lot of russian vocal led synthy disco around of late / ever, but we definitely like the idea of it. and so we have the first release on the brand new tirk affiliated label nang. d pulses sound is a sonic cocktail that represents the different flavours of its ingredients. great for dancing, as well as regular home listening, making love or preferably cooking. you can call it russian house, full of spirit, soul and its own philosophy. now on to the tunes. the foto mix of more combines cold robo synth bass and stripped back rhythms with the haunting tale of love, loss and the ultimate fulitility of existence (probably). the original mix lives up to the live jam side to the d pulse manifesto with organic funk and jazzy chops leading the way. fellow russian alcos coolkas carries on where his new work on tirk left off, with simple but sparkling and sophisticated electronics working away with snippets of the vocal to mesmerising effect. the package rounds off with the spacey, warm, instrumental highway to saturn. nang has launched!

the a side holds monsoons wings of the dawn (anglo hindi extension) a huge cosmic play and rare as you like on original 12. this edit is a re eqd combination of the english language and hindi versions clocking in at over 10 minutes for extended slo mo dancefloor trip outs. a huge balearic classic by chilly is on the b side and now far more playable for any dancefloor as theres no nasty hoe down chorus to spoil the ride

following the release of synkro aka joe mcbride collection of his formative early works earlier this year, apollo recordings is proud to present a brand new ep that draws on the rich heritage of library music. despite having come up during the dubstep era mcbrides music has always resisted easy classification - hand in hand sees him shift his musical focus in a yet more cinematic direction. mcbride explains: the record was inspired and influenced by my love of electronic 80s uk library records like the chappell av series, bruton, soundstage & de wolfe music library. theres a lot of synth work that carries on from my album using my trusted juno-6 / sh101 / jx8p combo with the addition of drum samples via an old akai s2800 i purchased recently. most sounds ive made from scratch on hardware based on sounds used in the library records i mentioned above along with a few cheeky samples.- synkro s signature expansive atmospherics are still very much present, but now they have been burnished by soaring synth pads and pulsing drum tracks that call to mind the haunted melancholy of john carpenter or contemporary such as legowelt or andy stott. rhythmically hand in hand sees mcbride moving somewhat away from his usual off kilter programming inspired by 2-step and garage, embracing the steady pulse of 4:4 which turns out to be an effortless fit.

optimo trax presents a 4-track ep from germanys mathias schober, head honcho of berlin’s lossless label. as always we prefer to let our artists do the talking. heres what mathias has to say about this release - the idea behind all tracks on the ep was a simple setup of drums and one synth that would do a main sequence/sound, yet theres a lot of detail in all of them. in a certain way features a 808ish beat with a main sequence coming from a tiny monophon synth called atmegatron - 8bit love, it turned out being much more music than i thought it would be when i set everything up. but what rules are made for is the same setup but the sequence is a 101 and so are all the washed out fx synths. on is to break them i went a different route, i had the dub, delayed stabs synth first as i was messin with my moog and a space echo - which btw is used on every single track i release, if you haven’t noticed yet. so i was trying to build something around those stabs in order to fit the track to the others and so i ended up with another sequence coming from my moog. as there was still space on the record, i decided to add an ambient version of is to break them, i love the ambience on this track. i hope that my love for dub sounds is obvious enough on these tracks. happy i found such an excellent home for the ep!

new kid felix leifur made quiet a stir with his debut release on dirt crew last year. the icelandic juggernaut comes from the striving reykjavik music scene and is working closely with the lagaffe tales guys on building a new northern house empire. since his debut hes been working hard on creating a more varied vision of his unique lo slung hip hop approach to house music. with this ep he offers six new outings that have one thing in common, very warm and moody sounds ranging from disco through jazz and hip hop. were certain that he will continue to further cement his name in the coming years and were looking forward to working with him on plenty of exciting projects. opening with eyelids, felix delivers a rough, deep and dark house cut with broken beats, warped piano loops and twisted sampling throughout. classy has a smoky jazz feeling, kept tight with clever beat programming while evolving around a catchy sax motif. our personal fav is the title track, in general, a stunning broken beat house jam, smooth and loose, with swirling keys and a funk flavoured bass. the b-side begins with midwinter, a dance floor gem on a straight up junket. its deep, forward moving and bass driven, much like his track feels like that featured on our deep love compilation in 2016. yet another highlight for us is apollo, theres not many records out there that sound quite like this, thoroughly warped and contorted, depraved strings and a hypnotising rhodes arc and strain until the bass drops and it all falls in place psychedelic beauty! he closes with mine, a dope lo fi hip hop beat that casually wraps our ears, an ice cold soul infused piece.

those with a passion for heavyweight electro and drexciyan sounds have long held french producer franck kartell in high regard. he s been working away on the fringes delivering high-grade material for a decade, and finally got round to dropping his debut album, afterlife, last year. here he delivers a swift follow-up, effortlessly flitting between icy ambience, vector lovers style electro-idm, creepier compositions, and the kind of oddly symphonic, soundtrack-inspired fare that exists to stir the emotions. its a far more fragile sounding set than some might expect, but no worse for it. while theres little dancefloor material on show, kartell s downtempo fare is a cut above most of his contemporaries.

following the success of the consumer ep by fellow label owner james johnston comes the praise ep by alex agore, and its a true return to form for him on no matter what. the record opens with the title track >praise< - an inspired tribute to gospel music, keeping all the soul but reimagining it into something more infectious. uplifting keys combine with vocals that will have you trying your best to sing-a-long, over a bass groove that holds it all together. >falling< is a slower affair, with its dream-like chords, airy synthwork, cowbell hits and seamless hats. a perfect track to start a night or to end one. the b-side completes the package with two undeniable house jams. you will soon realise how much you like >theres no love< when its skippy vocal is stuck in your head, hours after hearing it for the first time. >i can feel you< closes out the ep on a deeper note which will have you thinking of moments when the sun is about to rise, yet the night is far from over.

so what is after the void ... we bang the bomb of course with a lady in a thong surrounded by snakes and hand grenades, obvious really! having been away for some time it appears that a light sounds dark spring is in the air. en route to their next destination (rumoured to be a dark subterranean world full of nasty mutants danger electrified tracks out this summer) with arms out the window and the mothership roof down, its full steam ahead and proper european dance music time. not really train spotting as before although a couple are a bit off piste like maltas very own ian dury by the name of iain richardson rapping about sitting on a green bus! much more like it however are classic italo covers of big in japan, gloria, a wonderful new wave version of falcos euro smash der kommissar and the thoughts massive german hit wait a long time sounding like some long lost talk talk record. light sounds dark do some minor tweaking (going for that natural look) to big beast anthems axodrys you and colme 111s you take me high (early euro take on chicago) and for lovers of something a bit more funky theres some groovy goings on from kraut funksters epsilon urging people to leave the city which might not be a bad idea if the water runs out.

these fellas hailed from leeds, and apparently have some sort of morbid love affair with balconies... mystery meat is on a tear these days and continuing to up the ante bring you a trio of terrific reworks from leeds finest, the dashing duo that is death on the balcony. paul and mark have been on the forefront of the deep house and disco world for a number of years now following a killer contribution to soul claps 2nd free.p >cruel banana< not to mention their >adventures of soul clap podcast - downtown:uptown<. fast forward to 2011 and the boys are on all of the top labels of the moment, including culprit, silver network, airdrop and their own magicbag. its no wonder then that their contribution to the fabled mystery meat imprint is anything short of stellar. >get out of your world< is an electro boogie monster, already melting down dancefloors from london to los angeles, berlin to beijing and back again theres just no denying that bassline! >what is dub< takes things more melodic and dare we say deeper with a hypnotic vocal that you just cant get out of your head. rounding death on the balconys ep out is >if you want my champagne<, a bouncy house re-work of one of the 80s finest voices. bounce to this!

heidis-run jackathon parties have been hitting cities internationally since late 2009, now with residencies in london, berlin, paris, miami, manchester and amsterdam Ð jackd house is truly taking a fair slice of the scene. the compilation isnt an add on, a supplement to the nights: its deep grounded sound and thoughtfully crafted line-up backs up the global club-motion that is emerging within heidis control.mix favourites step up as the deep and bassy foundings of deetrons the juggler, funk-told incoming bitch by soul clap and move-strong whiff it yawl from jamie jones. although the first mix this year to really engage in houses history, its freedom status Ð it escapes cliche, avoiding big cheez for serious deep, electronics: heidi keeps the listing real. the especially-recorded vocal drops of house-legend derrick carter also make the record what it is, his infamous chicago-born vox gives residence to what heidis trying to do: resurrect the old school.dancefloor destruction is on pause, the club is still a playground, still moving hard theres just more room to play now, as steve bugs last track titles: jacks back.

our man ryo murakami sends over the next transmission in his exciting and growing catalogue of productions. always inspired by the raw and soulful sound of chicago and new york, this next ep puts forward his vision and continuation of this timeless house feeling. lead track >just for this< is a wonderful celebration of heavy slow motion house. classic house references and even a few classic samples meet in a dirty, deep ride into the tweaked out and extended vibes of the late night people. a journey through the city of house, a perfect refl ection of the times, bringing warmth and light in a once colder world. graeme clark aka the revenge, a fi gure who has enjoyed much success with his deviant disco sound, steps up for remix duties - and a fi ne job he does too! building his mix from the bare bones, adding a little more pace and forward momentum, his version is also tightly bound within the roots of emotional, deep vibes house. this is an outstanding remix - functional, clear and fully devoted to the classic sound. on the b side a mysterious original, >untitled<, sees ryo pushing things a little further still. the energy levels climb higher and higher as this modern hypno-houser phases and pulses upwards over nearly 8 minutes of jacking, sample laden freshness. we love to visit ryos house, where everybodys welcome and theres smiles all round

strut present the story of one of the most influential and revered labels emerging from new york in the late >70s and 80s<, ze records. after the late 70s punk and new wave explosion in new york, ze became a by-word for the anything-goes culture clashes that typified the big apple during the early 80s. formed by french art student michel esteban and british journalist michael zilkha, ze quickly created its own unique independent universe, signing artists as varied as alan vegas electronic postpunk pioneers suicide, trash disco queen cristina and maverick producer august darnell a.k.a. kid creole. with estebans sharp graphic eye leading the labels visual identity, ze hit the new york zeitgeist head on and became supremely hip û in 1982, the face magazine nominated it ôthe most fashionable label in the world.the labels early success led to a deal with chris blackwells island records, which gave zes releases worldwide exposure and brought worldwide fame to kid creole, was (not was) and more. over thirty years on and ze remains one of the great cult labels of its time. with this new compilation, strut takes a snapshot of the many weird and wonderful fusions that surfaced on its famous nyc cab-influenced yellow and black label. highlights include one of the earliest outings by was (not was), tell me that im dreaming, a disbelieving commentary on reagan-omics, bob blankÆs short-lived disco supergroup aural exciters and a larry levan mix of kid creoles biting parable about corruption in the caribbean, theres something wrong in paradise. other featured artists include ze label regulars cristina, bill laswells material, kookie french experimentalist lizzy mercier descloux, and camp disco-electro icons, les garcons.
