mole city is not in the tradition or deviating from the tradition – it is the tradition. after two decades of launching drums, guitars and pianos through the shifting interzones between harmony and chaos (moonlighting along the way with the likes of sleater-kinney, wild flag, elliott smith, built to spill and a long list of others), quasi are a genre of their own - they write songs in the style of quasi, and mole city is the quasi song book: parlour sing-alongs for the last century.

dutch producer arts the beatdoctor is set to release his newest work, collaborating with pioneering label lowriders recordings. this ep, titled lazy thunder, marks a significant change to his trademark sound. breaking away from his former laid back style displayed on 2007s transitions (unexpected records), 2008s progressions ep (beats broke) and his releases with the q4 (project: mooncircle), this new ep continues the trend already hinted at in his recent remixes: still present are the hypnotic loops and deep atmospheres, but the setting has changed from the lounge area to the main stage

after the recent success of their expansive debut full length on idle hands and while they bask in the glory of their recently well received resident advisor podcast, jacob hodge and matt lambert push on with a new ep on bristols futureboogie. to date outboxx have fomented their own ebullient house style that is imbued with a keen sense of uplifting melody, plenty of analogue dust and some heavyweight bass, largely on bristol based labels, and this new ep sees them continue in that fine form.

major people is a new label from santiago salazar. the debut track *new beginnings* is more of a theme song for salazar as he introduces the major people label. modulating synthes can be heard throughout the track and the catchy bassline will warm any dance floor.
*technik* is a slice of sleek, contemplative techno that is far out on a late-night tip, leaving only a bouncing bassline and skipping tech-house beat to hold down the groove amongst the tune’s more ethereal sounds. on the remix, chicagos defend:r (ricardo mirandas alter-ego) takes apart the original to form a hybrid electro style remix laced with sub bass grooves and just the right amount of synths to take it to the next level.
this is the beginning of much more to come from major people.

high sheens third release of the year comes from sheffield based newcomer pegasus, who has recorded some classic garage sounds while retaining a unique style for 2013. the package comes complete with a stripped back warehouse techno remix from innershades and a deep house reworking from high sheen family lovers rights.

seb zito steps up to the plate for the next release on fuse london with his never ep. title track never delves deep with a moody atmospheric groove whilst sub dubs 111 toughens things up with a stripped back flavour. on the flipside, remixes of never see enzo siragusa and rich nxt inject a d&b style b-line whilst ben rau brings a melodic vision to his version.

messalina records return with a fantastic ep of eclectic dancefloor bubblers from fellow we love space residents jamie fatneck low and lucci capri (aka dj callum). first up is the eagerly awaited vinyl release of fatnecks incredible acid rework of michael jacksons classic billie jean, highly in-demand since receiving heavy rotation from greg wilson (the only dj lucky enough to have a copy) who nicely sums the track up...i love the way fatneck has put a somewhat psychotic twist on billie jean via his acid interpretation - inspired west yorkshire wacko madness! next up lucci capri delivers the quirky balearic chugger dame un beso, with super-sweet latino lyrics and a great reggae-influenced swing. flip over for the beautifully understated because today i saw u which melds a cool deep house groove with esther phillips yearning vocals. rounding off the ep in style is fatnecks superb dancefloor-friendly edit of the aretha franklin version what a fool believes. great stuff - welcome back messalina!

vitalik recordings welcomes sam russo to the ranks with the rather fantastic vanishing test ep. sams production skills defy his years, his style defined and his sound signature. his trained ears have been sought after by the likes of craig richards, matt tolfrey and huxley in recent studio collaborations. his music is non-categorical genre speaking however his influences permeate his music, dub and bass play key roles, darkness and light coexist in a dynamic juxtaposition, bright expansive pads soar over rumbling kicks and moody bass lines.

analog chronicles returns on decabaret records with the electrofield ep. carribean sausage is a funky techno track with a groove that never stops and preacher is an uncompromised electro track showing the duos unique mixing style. finally dj skurge takes us back to detroit with a church remix. including an always collectable artwork by alan oldham.

laurent garnier on tribute & fantasy ep: since the very first ep arno released a few years back on his own imprint, i have been a big fan of his productions. arno has always stood apart from the so-called hype and has developed his own style of trippy-as-hell dancefloor grooves.

e.a.r always pull something perfectly summery out of the bag just as the sun pokes it head from behind the clouds and with *mercado viejo*, it is no different. this carnival style mood lifter is destined to have heads nodding and feet tapping in beach bars and around pools all over the world. news has it that it is already heralding the summer season in ibiza in a wonderfully cheerful way.

small pyramids is las zach hunsaker. heavily influenced by nu disco, early house music and edit culture, zach began cutting up old disco, funk and r&b tracks for his dj gigs in los angeles as small pyramids. making the move from producing edits to sampling for original tracks was a natural progression and crucial step to developing a unique style. as a result of remixing acts like nightwaves and arohan,small pyramids gained blog exposure on sites like disco workout, tracasseur, in the deep end and disco delicious. the first small pyramids ep, another way to feel was released late in 2010 to great critical acclaim and shortly thereafter zach signed to glasgow underground.

cult melbourne band primitive calculators cut a single in 1979 before splitting in the true punk fashion. a posthumous eponymous live album was released in 1981 (also reissued this spring on desire) and that was it. those two tracks are as fresh now as they were more than 30 years ago: in a style not dissimilar to the screamers or cabaret voltaire (circa nag nag nag), primitive calculators used raw monophonic synth lines with scratchy guitars and screaming vocals but the songs were standing on their own (as the unplugged version of do that dance that appears on the primitive calculators and friends 1979-82 could testify. the original 7 inch is now incredibly rare and hard to find and this reissue is its exact replica. first pressing limited to 500 copies.

decoy07 takes a deeper turn with the third act ep. miss sunshine (kms, monocline, tictactoe) has been working flawlessly in the studio for the past six years and this ep is no exception. third act is a heavy workout of riding bells and an old-school synth line which grooves its way through percussion builds and changes. intimidate is deeper and darker with a chugging groove and twisting effects growing into a more graceful melody. ground loop captures miss sunshines more ambivalent mood with a haunting groove that is perfect for those basement techno moments. markus suckut (figure, sckt)supplies the remix with his interpretation of ground loop, taking it more minimal and stripped back but maintaining the groove in his own familiar style.

nicone, the versatile musician and likeable style-icon: unshaven and latently bleary-eyed, of course, but elegant and - thankfully - modest at the same time. over the past years, alexander gerlach has become synonymous with a certain playful touch and light hearted attitude that flows through his music and goes hand in hand with a laidback natural tenor.

*turn me on* by jay w. mcgee is the third release in a series of sought after boogie, disco and modern soul re-issues on légère recordings. the original 12inch vinyl single appeared on the tiny canadian indie label love productions in 1980 and is immensely hard to find these days. *turn me on* is an unusual production for its time, grooving along unbelievably deep in a spartanic arrangement, and fuelled by vocals which are not too far away from sylvesters iconic style of mixing soul, disco, funk and jazz.

rsi is a new label affiliated to the tusk wax empire, and for their first release they look to the unexpected choice of the posthuman duo of rich bevan and josh doherty. hecatism sees the pair wander into deeper corners than their music is usually known for, trading electro breakbeats for a mid tempo production filled with resonant textures and vocal chunks that could nominally be described as house, while helioshock sees them break out the 303 for some heady acid grooves. the remixes of the title track come expertly chosen also, with disco bloodbath resident damon martin taking the track even deeper into something approaching balearic groove, and pork intl, who adds a distinctly more interstellar flavour to the original with its danny wolfers-style analogue house chords.

marco baileys latest attack boasts an impressive array of reworks, apart from his almost-jacking original. the mighty carlo lio goes first with commanding chords playing the lead role, while his sub bass bubbles in the background. mangled samples are interspersed with style and metallic clangs and spacious effects complete the affair.

meditative, absorbing dance music in true moritz style — at times seemingly transfixed by its own elements, and minimal almost to vanishing-point, but quickly back ticking, kicking and amassing, with the lethal dubwise density of the classic berlin sound. twelve minutes long, trenchant and forbidding but sharply alive, the dub itself is a kind of deep fort-da gambit which scoops your brain out for a quick sluice, before replacing it slightly skewiff. dont drop your guard because of the tresor.
