american label beyond the speaker made an impression with their first release angels against dust two years ago, a tasty 12inch split between legowelt & willie burns. for the latest outing, canadian mastermind michael silver aka cfcf (rvng, ghostly, 1080p) celebrates the soul and grooves of house, electro, and techno. three tracks that balance dancefloor hustle, intricate detail and flourishing melodies. lead track head up is a poignant call to the dancefloor, a peak hour house cut with an emergent vocal sample that rallies all for a blissful groove excursion. the b-side is a moodier affair, with mossy wall submerging the listener with potent rhythms as ominous bass intersects with a waking metropolis of melody. and the classic techno sound of sea of love deftly lulls us with gentle vocals and a looping guitar phrase.

alejandro mosso, aka funzion, was born in mendoza, argentina in 1983. a student of guitar and music theory since he was 14, he started his solo minimal house/techno project >funzion< in 2003. his aim is to combine the production techniques of idm and clicks and cuts with the rhythmicalbforms of techno and microhouse. the result thus far has been a tricky, warm and energetic sound that has caught the attention of highly regarded labels such as telegraph, sushitech, and now alphahouse. funzions >stelle< ep consists of two warm, intricate, and percussive club stompers that showcase his grasp on complex rhythms and playful melodies. >random kisses< is a moody vocal excursion into the mountains of your imagination. a meandering track that suits open air parties as well as it does big dark discos, this is a spring season hit. >random love< starts out as a charming shuffley ballad, only to subtly morph into a looming synth rave monster, all the while keeping its playful and hypnotizing grip on the dancefloor. bomb alert!

through the sparkle is a collaboration between french ensemble astr•d and american pianist and composer rachel grimes. rachel grimes is best known for her chamber music project rachelÕs, a hugely influential group formed in 1991 in louisville, kentucky, releasing six studio albums between 1995 and 2005. she has also released a string of contemporary classical works in recent years on labels such as temporary residence. astr•d is a collective of four musicians based in nantes, releasing records on rune grammofon and home normal. after years of mail and email back and forth over the ocean, from nantes to kentucky, astr•d invited rachel to come for a residency to make music together and play shows in france. they gathered for a few days, here and there, in 2012 and 2013 to write songs in cyril and vanina s home studio in the countryside.

there will always be a bass drum making people dance, but it will rarely sound the same. techno and house are in continuous flux. there will always be people celebrating. and each year new kids join the scene, hungry for pleasure, for beauty, for ecstasy - for life.
