2016 repress , having provided a remix for the label back in 2010 ethyl & flori now release their first full ep for the label, the last ninja kicks things off with an unmistakable old school tech-house feel which to us at fof recalled the classic architecture dj mix by terry francis with its punchy kick, sharp percussion and imbued uplifting warmth. fornjot by flori on the flip is a different proposition, although still deeply entrenched in a throwback to yesterdays production stylings, this is a much more techno orientated groove with the tracks repeated metallic bass riff anchoring the track in a gloriously hypnotic yet fresh way.

the story of bonobo is one that has become uncommon in contemporary music. there was no sudden, viral internet sensation, no one-off big hit, no abrupt, accidental alignment with the zeitgeist. instead, over the course of four albums, myriad tours, singles, remixes and production work for other artists, he quietly but very definitely became one of the most important artists in electronic music. the hard work paid off, and culminated in 2010s black sands, a masterful album that married greens inimitable melodic genius and musicianship to bleeding edge electronics, bass and infectious drums.

after last year’s massive “brainbox” album, de:tuned presents the 7th and final installment “unboxed brain” which contains 3 excellent re-interpretations by future/past (aka kirk degiorgio), mark broom and the black dog of selected tracks off the album and an exclusive new track by the future sound of london. yet again, mastered by matt colton (alchemy mastering) and related artwork by designer kevin foakes from openmind (aka strictly kev, dj food from ninja tune). both kirk degiorgio and mark broom rework b12’s “worlds end”. kirk degiorgio, who makes a rare appearance as future/past, increases the energy levels and turns the original into a dance floor bomb. broom’s version heals back to a more electro and breakbeat vibe by adding some deep ballsy and stretched out beats. on the flipside, scanner’s “eros” gets the black dog treatment. the illustrious uk outfit strips down the original into an eerie futuristic soundscape. lastly, the future sound of london brings us an intense piece of sound design: sit back and let the music take control, stay tuned!

for their 10th release manchester based label my first moth present a collaboration between two visionary artists from opposite sides of the atlantic. new york born rapper blurum 13 should need no introduction after lacing countless records from the last decade with his distinctive gravel-voiced flow, most notably the classic ninja tune album >children of possibility< which he recorded as one-third of one self alongside dj vadim and yarah bravo. producer frameworks is a relative newcomer although still fiercely prolific, having notched up collaborations with long island legends qnc and uk rapper bang on amongst others. with releases on first word records, hero records and organik recordings, frameworks is quickly forging a reputation for a solid production technique, fusing old-school sensibilities with a touch of live instrumentation and a keen ear for a killer sample.

for the first solo ep on horror boogie, fedka the irritant steps up, after his outstanding track on horror boogie 01. fedka the irritant is probably best known as the trombonist in the excellent band pest (ninja tune), alongside ben pest (panic bridge, victim, bonus round). he is also a seriously original and versatile producer in his own right. he has released on panic bridge, alongside the other pest members and his trombone techno live sets are something to behold. here, he drops four varied tracks, starting with the behemoth >words for friends<. a heavy slice of wonky techno, with a big kick and rasping synth. next up is one uncertain eyebrow. a building, funky, fuzzy acid-laced track that drops harder and harder as it goes on. on side b, calypso-flavoured, jazzed up >stick it< progresses on to a become a warbling bass effort with a smooth hip-hop vocal. last but not least, is >you only die once<, another funk-laden monster, with a killer slap bass line.

following on from their own ep, the latest offering from hanuman and atki2s steak house imprint sees baobinga, poirier and a host of mcs join the steak house family. steak 003 sees the label moving into bashment territory with the original bass music badman baobinga serving up three prime cuts of juicy vocal raggastep. backed by a remix by karnival king poirier, this record is crammed full of party heat. sam baobinga has been one of the most important producers on the british music scene over the last five years. with releases on labels such as soul jazz, ninja tune and positiva as well as his own build imprint and remixes for artists like guru, the ragga twins, and the wu tang clan, baobinga has consistently reinvented and reshaped his sound and stayed several steps ahead of the game. this release sees binga push his heavy raggastep sound, bass heavy vocal bashment with a nod to the lush full synth sounds of future garage and featuring original voicings by some of the uks hottest mcs. fire!

released in conjunction with john tejadas lucid dream: recovered data 95 full-length album as part of the phthalo origins series, reworked data is two singles and eps featuring (as the release name implies) updated remixes, reworkings, and versions of john tejadas original electronic compositions by his contemporary peers in techno and house production.
reworked data vol. 1 features bodycode applying the house and techno sensibility of his recent immune album for spectral sound to tejadas production, followed by labelmate broker/dealers sophisticated melding of the source materials nearly fifteen-year-old anvil vapre-era sense of melancholy to an insistent 4/4 rhythm. traum schallplattens dominik eulberg continues his tradition of developing elaborate, drawn-out explorations of the ebb and flow of techno dynamics by adapting the asymmetrical idm sounds of tejadas source into a persistently propulsive techno narrative. finally, ninja tune and plug researchs daedelus applies the accessible synthpop template of last years love to make music to to tejadas melodies — almost crafting another >fair weather friends< in the process.

another serious result from our warehouse rummaging! si begg is a man of many musical personalities, his list of aliases is impressive to say the least (bigfoot, buckfunk3000, lenny logan, s.i. futures, zygmunt janowski...). but one of his oldest, and certainly one of his strangest, is cabbage boy. in fact i confess i am old enough to remember his releases in the early 90s on cassette tape under the umbrella of the >cabbage head collective< (which also included such techno notables as cristian vogel & tim wright) - and pretty mental they were too. the lost tapes vol. 1 doesnt disappoint on that front, containing such gems as a remix of 80s pop mysteries frank chickens>we are ninja<, and an electronic cover version of >king kong< by frank zappa (ask your parents...). totally out there, but totally cool at the same time...highly recommended to anyone looking for something with some real personality amidst the hard-drives full of faceless (and usually nameless) digital fluff

the last 12 months have been a boon for fans of luke vibert, with the veteran cornishman delivering a killer acid album for hypercolour, and a slick, melodious set of disco-inspired jams under his kerrier district alias. here he returns to regular home planet mu with another typically entertaining set inspired by classic british electronic music. utilising his battery of vintage music-making machines, vibert giddily doffs a cap to early 90s intelligent techno, rave-era hardcore, bleep, chicago acid and braindance, occasionally veering off track via easy listening inspired future jazz, wagon christ style hip-hop head-nodders (the title track, which doffs a cap to a forgotten, mid-90s remix he did for ninja tune) and squidgy, synth-propelled mutant electrofunk.
