airhead, (aka rob mcandrews) a resident, founding member and spiritual ocelot of the 1-800 dinosaur crew, will be releasing a four track ep *believe*, the first of a series of releases from dan foats emerging artist collective. this believe ep is a turning point for airhead, equivalent to the moment in the film *witness* when harrison ford, as john book, realises that the hitmen (witnessed by the amish kid in the toilets) are actually policemen. the inward has been exchanged for the outward. where airheads critically acclaimed debut album *for years* was all about tip-toeing barefoot into thick carpeted darkened rooms, this new ep, inspired by two years of 1-800 dinosaur parties, is all about the boom-boom oscillation and hands-in-the-air machine gun parties.

it’s been a while since red lasers last release which left a void in the uk output of manctalo synth jams but now a planned schedule of three releases in quick succession means plenty more analogue chug for you to rattle your bones too.

there has been an emerging uk synth scene for a few years now, with vinyl labels like cyberdance, flight recorder and red laser pushing the sound onto vinyl pretty much alone in the uk. defiant against the odds, their resilience is now coming to fruition as it finally seems the scene is exploding inspiring new generations of synth disco lovers to create labels or parties based on the european output of the scene. an artist that has been associated with all said labels and has been riding the wave even when it was a mere ripple is kid machine.

cyber dance records return with a full-length double-vinyl album from manchesters kid machine (aka mark wilkinson) following a string of instantly sold-out eps for viewlexx, red laser and flight recorder. a long-time collaborator of world-famous italo disco dj flemming dalum, it is no surprise that many of the tracks have that hallmark space sound reminiscent of the likes of cyber people and koto, but mark stamps his own distinct identity on the genre by slowing down the bpms and incorporating many other influences throughout so that this is no retro affair but a distinctly fresh and modern take on the genre.

kidnap kid’s birds that fly label got off to a flying start with his ow&#8203,,,,,,n release,‘ moments’ feat leo stannard picking up over two million plays and shaking up the spotify / hype machine charts. next up on the imprint is rising uk star apple&#8203,,,,,,bottom with &#8203,,,,,,‘the ride’ ep, an artist that draws many parallels to kidnap kid’s own early career as he barely has made his way out of his teens but already caught the ear of some of the most sought-after labels and radio establishment. annie mac can’t get enough of him and his releases on kerri chandler’s madtech, zed bias’ biasonic and uk powerhouse black butter records have coined him one of the future figureheads of dance music. applebottom has come to be considered a beatmaker able to transverse genres with that rarest of production talents: the consistent ability to make a straight-up club banger, which makes him the perfect follow up for birds that fly. “‘theride’ was quite a diff&#8203,,,,,,erent piece of music for me, ’he explained of the track, ‘i had been thinking about where i d want to release it and i was pretty stuck. but shortly after i d finished it kidnap kid’s first ep on birds that fly came out, and straight away i felt a connection with the sound and a lot of the music i’ve been making recently. it already feels like it has a clear and distinctive sound forming and i can t wait for my music to be part of that.” applebottom hails from the musical mecca of bristol but shares a pioneering view of its style and output. “&#8203,,,,,,i think a lot of people have just gotten too comfortable making the same sounding dance music - and for me that kind of defeats the point, there’s so much variety in it. i feel that particularly for my generation anyway, we’re a lot younger as producers and it’s kind of our job to be that next generation that produces that next sound. we should be striving to make something new and different and build our own vision of what it should be.

catherine and gerald o-connell s work as lives of angels quietly and subtly helped to define a whole generation of post-punkers for the greater part of the 1980s. much like other luminaries of the scene at the time, the couple have remained in the shadows of time, highly praised by the collectors but barely ever cited by the mainstream, and if that s not punk then we don t know what is. dark entries are doing the honours of course, and the imprint have managed to license a whole bag of previously released and unreleased material, the former from a bunch of dusty cassettes which are now going for gold on the second-hand market. this was the era of the drum machine, and these 11 tunes are all carried by that unmistakable analogue swing, at times harsh and leaning into something tech-minded, and at other times playful and quirky, a tendency which defined this outfit and the time in which they operated. what a record, this is another dark entries monster

hot on the heels of the well received dirty channels vs danny russell watchin out/ frazelle today is the day (linkwood edit), we bring you more twelve inch heat. this time in the shape of an unreleased nugget from funk and soul legend, bobby boyd, the founding member and lead singer of bobby boyds congress - who metamorphosed into the lafayette afro rock band, after bobbys departure in 1971. on the a-side, producer and engineer extraordinaire bob blank - whos worked closely with the likes of arthur russell, taana gardner,sun ra, larry levan and kid creole - turns out a mix that hits the sweet spot between boogie and proto-house with a hint of latin freestyle. whilst the flip sees darting synths and swirling pads layered over a tight machine groove, as bobby reminds us of the simply joy that dancing can bring.

new york electro residents meet latvia. diverse comp. ep with hot machine-funk tracks for real freaks only. alonzo, a new york resident and miami native brings the sub-bass and pocket calculator sounds. dmitry distant and starpliktuve deliver eastern european hot, traditional electro. new york s chase smith brings back a funky version of late 1990 s electro-disco. new york s kid ginseng brings a combination of mid-1980s new york/la electro to the table. this is a very diversely packed compilation ep with the loudness and depth typical of kraftjerkz.

newcomer cody currie looks to better listen records to host his sophomore ep after lighting things up with his debut on pusic late in 2016. the effort is stacked with deep disco stylings similar to that of sample + synth maestros brame & hamo and fouk. its an exquisitely layered effort from the london kid, one which will please the intellect and dancefloor demand equally.

sebastian maschat a.k.a. stoneage kid has been around in the house music scene for about 15 years now: cult stoner house with extra produktionen , drummer in erlend oye s whitest boy alive and numerous other projects. stoneage kid is an hardware / mpc based act, with own vocals and a very distinctive electro pop aesthetique. his first ep on smile for a while creally sounds like captain comatose meeting isolee in some purple haze panic room. you ll find melancholic drum machine jams, some serious synths, lotsa vocoder and a lot of bassline-bumping. phillip lauer delivers a refreshingly cheesy remix with god singing solo and the holy ghost on drums just as expected. hang on to a dream is quite a special tune, written and sung by german indie veteran otto von bismarck. this remix version is really something for intimate connoiseurs of both pop and house music.

this is the year of peder mannerfelts rebirth. after seven years he has laid the subliminal kid to rest. with this new 12 inch, the chains have been locked in and the road map has been obliterated. ep1 is focused like a laser etching out intricate patterns in massive, humming machines. mannerfelts ideas have been reduced to a razors edge and he balances these freeform compositions like a master.
this ep could be seen as a prelude to peder mannerfelts debut album under his own name that will be released by digitalis industries in february and at the same time is the first part in a ongoing series of self released records by mannerfelt.
