one of the founding figures of the jamaican music industry, arthur duke reid produced many of the classics of the ska, rock steady and early reggae eras. and when, in the mid-1970s, dub music took hold, he was able to call upon one of the most talented soundmen in the business, errol brown. utilising some of reid’s most memorable rhythms, performed by the producer’s legendary session crew, tommy mccook & the supersonics, brown created some of the finest dub mixes of the period, a dozen of which were gathered on treasure dub vol. 1, one of the most acclaimed collections from the golden age of reggae.

reaching its 15th release, amphia sees the return of cezar lazar’s double ep, intuitively called “archetypes”. known for his innovative approach both behind the decks and productions, cezar’s creative alter-ego enacts a variable puzzle with hard-edged sonic pieces laid out over five tracks, each with their own distinct acoustic palette. side a holds “equtime”. this side-long track envelops a stripped-down melody with perforated rhythmical pads, fleshed out with disconnected threads of vocals. side b is dedicated entirely to “badgervox”. displaying a weighty bass section alongside the shuffled percussion work, its intricate melody is integrated smoothly creating a unique soundscape. “thicken court” holds the first half of side c. sharp in its composition, it holds an assorted percussion ensemble and a collection of fizzy waveforms. they complement a thunder-like bass protagonist that holds the center stage. we continue with “boe dark”, where textures and sharp tones grow in layers upon layers creating tension. the apex is reached when modular timbres are hindered by sparse piano patterns, completing this electro-acoustic scenery. on the flipside, “wedmar” holds the key to our puzzle with its accurate four-to-the-floor feat. with a series of programmed overlapping organ vibes, the sound feels both piercing and intense, creating a sort of sensory impairment. “archetypes” displays cezar lazar s gentle subtleties and fluency in different dialects of idm.

a new year means new musical horizons here at the bordello. curses formed his sound in the distortion and sweat of back alley dive bar bars amidst the crash of guitars and the audible gulp of beer. hints of disco and wave balance this rougher edge, smoothing down those creased lines for a style that adheres to no boundaries. -pedal to the metal and don t look back- is a perfect introduction to curses multifaceted sound. beats orbit burbling bass and brash strings in a work of dreamy hypnotics. -knife in teeth- comes from a similarly shadowy lair. dark bars are further inked by industrial percussion in a track born on the factory floor to strict ebm parents. terr takes on -pedal to the metal and don t look back- and does the original proud. bass rumbles to the tune of a guttering engine before lighter notes take hold. murky currents are cleared by bright synth blasts in this uplifting remake. the bird of paradise closes the ep with his psychedelic take on -knife in teeth.- drums take on a more sinister tone as tribal rhythms give rise to jungle imagery and the immediate threat of what might lurk behind those supposedly innocent sounds.

having recently appeared on bosconi records and altzmusica, daisuke kondo is a producer on the rise at present. this outing on vibraphone adds fuel to that particular fire with four distinctive cuts that push to the outer edges of house music without losing sight of the groove. -hold on to love- is, on the surface, an upbeat, disco-infused house jam, but there s a certain trippy approach kondo takes in the processing department that edges the music into a different head space. -life- meanwhile gets gritty and bass heavy at one end of the frequency range, and airy and melodic at the other. -feelin blue- gets even dustier and scratchier with its sample treatment, and then -fallen star- lays down some unflinching machine beats with wonky, distant piano licks.

hold tight for a shocking, rare discovery from the dusty vaults of a forgotten 90s breakbeat house outfit s minidisc archives. the two tracks that make up the repertoire of the two bad jews crew are steeped in the wistful optimism of the good old days - they just don t make them like this any more. -holland memory- rolls on a measured use of a break and a simple chord sequence that could melt on for days, plus there s space for the odd cheeky sample to remind you of the unpretentious era these tracks herald from. -tony hayers (dub)- meanwhile ups the dx7 funk with a rollicking house cut that would sit right with any true deep house head who wants a little uk attitude in their soul stew.

setting out to make some happy music, sophie lloyd produced calling out in a dreary january as an antidote to the pervading doom and gloom of the news, summoning the power of the most joy-filled sound of all, gospel. this no-holds-barred anthem radiates all the live atmosphere of gospel worship in mid flow, with full instrumentation, keyboard breaks and understated kick drum pulling it all together. bringing in the uplifting voices of soul trio dames brown to re-record some old gospel samples was the icing on the cake, adding the last element of authenticity. a new member of the classic family, sophie lloyds impeccable knowledge of disco, soul and house shines through in this sparkling record, available on 7inch for the very first time.

pelerin s first release presents the bewildering works of brind, also known in certain circles as ban ditman, a friend of both classical influences and soundly crafted electronica alike. -hribi in noapte- ep shapes the tone of a well thought out concept, using melody and harmony as the center piece of creation. a side - -glotas in tarziu- grabs hold of the essence of the ephemeral human existence, capturing tales of long forgotten ache and nostalgia, making for an excellent after hour tool. flip to b and we have -lacul norilor-, an even more organic piece uplifting us with voices of angels speaking of hope and heavenly landscapes as the waves slowly cover the shore. excellent moments for both dancefloor and late nights at home with friends, vinyl only with original artwork.

umeko ando (1932-2004) was a folk singer from japan. she is a representative of the ainu culture on the hokkaido island in the north of japan. iuta upopo was released on her last cd upopo sanke in 2003, produced by oki kano (oki dub ainu band). upopo is the name of a particular singing style which involves repetition, while iuta simply means song. umeko ando performs this minimalistic vocal in a brittle, emotional manner which is framed by a slow, percussive pulse and oki’s tonkori patterns (the tonkori is a string instrument of the ainu). when pingipung’s andi otto toured japan in 2017, he came across this enchanting, folkloristic and danceable song in a dj set of a friend. he made contact with oki kano who agreed to license the track from his own label chikar studio. it is pressed on vinyl for the first time. this single is part of pingipung’s ongoing concentrical series of 7inches. we are very pleased to have a m.rux remix on the b side. he is not only a brilliant original producer, as his ep in the hold (ynfnd 2016) has proved, his claim to fame is a sublime collection of edits & cuts (for free on his bandcamp) which skillfully takes classics by nina simone, townes van zandt and others to the slowhouse dancefloor. his remix adds a gliding subbass, a kickdrum and occasional claps to the enhanced percussive structures of the original. umeko ando’s vocals adapt seamlessly to m.rux’s powerful electronic production

alter is the new album from belgium-based double bass player and electronic producer otto lindholm. divided into four colour-inspired, long-form movements, alter takes off from lindholms previous work a self-titled album released in 2015 on icarus records, and pushes the already abundant palette of sounds even further. this new work is more brooding and hypnotic. a deep, resonating bass is present - hinting at the likes of greek, chamber-doom merchants mohammad but perhaps with more attention placed upon textures and melody. the record moves at a funereal pace and opener fauve hits abyssal depths from the outset. a bowed melody is coaxed through the throbbing bass with dissonant harmonics drawing you in and holding you close. the ghostly beginnings of alyscamps create an overwhelmingly tense atmosphere where acoustic and electronic elements collide and evolve into a heaving, ceremonious drone. shafts of light emerge through the fog but the tone remains a haunted one. closer, heliotrope, strikes a more hopeful note. a lighter, more open feel emerges - bringing to mind early work of the rachels or perhaps deaf center.

h.takahashi, tokyo based architect and sound designer follows up his revered collection where to be? on where to now? records with raum, a full length lp suite of meditative pulse minimalism. raum draws its cues from a melting pot of closely connected yet wholly individual strands of minimalism - from the japanese minimalist works from the likes of hiroshi yoshimura and satoshi ashikawa, to masters such as erik satie and john cage, and ambient leaders brian eno and roedelius, takahashi soaks this historical influence and rings it out it through a modern filter to create a record of stillness, ethereal beauty, and transcendent energy. takahashi composes all of his music on his iphone, and this is no gimmick, rather a conscious decision which allows takahashi to constantly create on the go without the constraints of space, and for takahashi raum serves as a mediation on the relationship between sound and its environment. for takahashi this creative process feels something like an invisible phenomenon taking over & mutating these constantly changing spaces into abstract sound, creating a brief pseudo space which expresses and highlights the features of the environment for a moment in time.” although perhaps quite an abstract statement of intent, when deeply immersed into takahashi’s pieces this idea of slowly gliding through different architectural spaces is naturally conjured through the gentle repetitive pulse which runs through his work and the playful unstructured tonality of objects which weave around this forward (or upward) motion. raum was created across the city of tokyo, be it a café / park / office / road / platform / subway these pieces explore the power sound holds to emotionally enhance and mutate the listeners environment. the power of the music presented is in that which is barely there, embracing space, silence, and cyclical repetition. the music is to help us function - it s music to work to, to sleep to, to help us find a sense of space and oneness within a world that is increasingly wild and untameable.

check track 3 .... field records looks to l estasi dell oro (christopher ernst, aka penalune) for a new three-track ep for sound systems that once again takes us down the rabbit hole. following on from his previous i look upon nature while i live in a steel city album in 2015, this is another masterfully drawn out and engaging affair. -either to please or to educate- is the intended purpose of this ep release, utilizing guitar, tabla, and other electronic and acoustic instruments. the incessant movement of the metronomic tremors felt underneath our plains lay the rhythm. the threadbare dialogue we use to communicate frays slightly further. these spirals are given an explicit voice through leader annabelle kuwe s dispassioned public address to the remaining world at the great meeting of 2166, as recounted by sadie lapierre on closer achieve ignition .

london star alexis raphael returns to hot creations with the dance floor killer it’s kinda jazzy, with fine french exports dan ghenacia and chris carrier teaming up to deliver the remix with electrifying results. title track it’s kinda jazzy is an ultimate peak time weapon. alexis explains how its a real melting pot of different musical influences that have inspired me over the years. there s everything from hip-hop to 90 s uk house and garage, jungle/drum and bass, upfront house and techno and, of course, jazz. on the flip dan ghenacia and chris carrier deliver a solid remix that keeps the pace, changing gear through trippy turns. last up, second original track strip off lays down the swing with sultry vocal slices. an influential player on the london scene, alexis raphael earned his stripes across the pirate radio stations of north and east london during the late 90s and early 00s and went on to hold residencies at legendary london clubs the cross and bagley’s. his first release spaceship was picked up by hot creations sub-label hot waves in 2011. since then, he’s had numerous releases and remixes on labels including jackathon jams, of unsound mind, avotre and get physical and not forgetting his anthem, i know. dan ghenacia is the undisputed kingpin of the paris underground scene, having founded and ran freak n’chic for seven years and now one of the three creative minds behind new label and b2b2b dj outfit apollonia. chris carrier is another heavy-weight from the french underground scene. together they have delivered some recent killer ep’s on appolonia, music for freaks and adult only.

the next release on man power’s me me me features two emotive leftfield house cuts from dsc, the newly minted production alias of desert sound colony, aka liam wachs, the man behind the newly launched holding hands record label. wake up, is a sweetly melodic track of pulsing house, with coming round providing a pumping and muscular leftfield techno counterpoint. on remix duties man power invites north east upstart elliot adamson to remix wake up, before his full length ep coming up next on the label. hotly tipped by everyone from jackmaster to jamie jones, elliot is a superstar in the making, and relishes the opportunity to flex his more esoteric muscles with a slice of deconstructed electro that hints at the startling musical breadth, which the young producer is only beginning to reveal. coming round is remixed by none other the legendary rex the dog, who is not only an artist who man power has huge admiration for, but also someone he is pleased to call a good friend. the trust between the two artists shines through, as “rex” provides possibly one of the most unfettered dancefloor tracks of his career.

second release from the label offers up broken rhythms, jacking grooves and deep spirituals. hold me explores lyricism within tight repetitious rhythm, on which saxophonist tyrone isaac-stuart explores hook lines and story telling whilst bassist jordan christo maintains control over the low-end spectrum. that he man of hers melds jacking, upbeat tempo with romanticism and melancholy on top, with louis ktisti providing guitar accompaniment. one s own permanent faith, on the other hand, provides for a moodier and more subdued spiritual dance rhythm, which warms one up before the spiritual explorations in would you tell me about you. in this final track, the guitar rhythms provided by jabriel alsuhaimi and spiritual exorcism of the saxophone by tyrone isaac-stuart present a different angle in the approach towards discovering the endless groove.

repress 2017 , allez! as the curtains come down on another crazy summer of love, apollonia drop their latest release courtesy of io mulen - the ukranian rude boy who appeared on the label at the beginning of the year with ‘unknown to the unknown’. he’s back with a hefty six-track package which is sure to please his fans, and win him a whole new army of supporters. we get straight to business with the first track, ‘rdm37’, one of those trusty apollonia bouncing bombs. skittish beats work off a sublime groove, while io keeps the background full of interesting sounds, boings, cheeps and all manner of whimsical effects, introducing more and more as the track progresses. by the midpoint you’re so gripped by the track that your whole body is moving uncontrollably, super glued to the rhythm. next up, it’s ‘xdt54’ coming through with a deep, persuasive bassline that jigs around in the low end luring you into its web. simple, polished percussive elements keep things moving at a pace while subtle keys and barely-there vocals add further layers to this catchy little number. the third track in on this lengthy ep is ‘mpc13’, a walk on the sensual side. vocal snippets are interspersed among sultry pads, skipping four to the floor beats and a sleazy b-line to create a delectable slice of dance floor naughtiness. this one flirts with you as it writhes around, taking you ever deeper…four tracks in we have ‘zgb41’, another alluring cut that has all the hallmarks of a deep house classic. those shimmering pads, a bassline that feels like it was born in nineties chicago, diamond-cut beats and a general feeling of what we would call ‘true house music’. there’s soul, there’s funk and there’s realness, what more can you ask for?ypt58’ keeps us locked in to that hypnotic groove with an insistent b-line holding things down - together with the infectious rhythm cultivated by the drum arrangement, it’s a killer combo. put those together with the smooth atmospherics plus synth lines staggering in and out of the background and you’ve got yourself a roller. last but definitely not least is ‘zxy22’, a wistful slice of technoid funk which has a delicate melody at its foundation. as it develops we get sucked in to layer upon layer of beauty, from the analogue low end to the electric guitar riff – each layer complementing the other and creating a symphony of sounds that acts as a perfect way to close out the ep and will no doubt end plenty of dj sets, when it’s released. so monsieur io (mulen) returns to apollonia with an instant classic, make sure you snap it up right away. magnifique!

picking up where they left off three years ago, modern heads, the much-respected collaboration between gianluca meloni and dino sabatini, are back with a dynamic and intriguing four track ep. the duo go straight in here with the club-ready athena. throughout this track, tight percussive elements wind in and around one another, creating an ever-changing rhythm that you can only just hold onto. under this, tense synths pulse away, producing an opaque and insular atmosphere. next up, eumaeus lightens the mood somewhat, providing clarity with a distinct opening drum pattern. this mood doesnt last long though, as indiscernible, haunting vocals begin to echo in the distance, gradually moving closer and further in the mix as sharp pads swoosh either side. side b of the record opens with the deepest and longest track of the ep, eurycleia. simple yet unrelenting drums frame this hypnotic sci-fi episode, through which otherworldly screeches and rumbles reverberate over the twinkling sounds of machines. eurycleias atmosphere continues straight into the final track, laertes theme. this beatless piece takes eurycleias exploratory mood and extrapolates it over five and a half minutes, resulting in what feels like the perfect soundtrack to a glacial expedition in alien territory. as an ep this is a complete and coherent package, a perfect extension to modern heads previous work. the sound palette is familiar, yet refined, developed upon and taken further. the old beggar is undeniably worth the wait for anyone with a taste for the extraterrestrial.

the unrelenting force that is hot creations often acts as a breeding ground for raw talent. this next release does just that with four ‘hot jams’ from upcoming artists lee walker, pete dorling, neil parkes and greeko. first up, young producer lee walker from middlesbrough makes his debut on hot creations delivering ‘that little ditty’, which takes hold with a deeply intoxicating bassline, prominent hi-hats and punchy stabs that build to a frenzied climax. shooting onto the scene in 2015 with his off-the-cuff edit of dj deeon’s ‘freak like me’, which played by the likes of marco carola, dixon and loco dice, soon gained over 1 million hits on youtube and was finally picked up by defected records. having featured on ‘hot summer jams’ on the label back in 2014, essex dj and producer pete dorling is back with another killer track. ‘manyana’ drives with a heavy bassline as tribal vocal cuts are played throughout. other releases can be seen on the likes of viva music, resonance productions and nofitstate. also appearing on the same ‘hot summer jams’, neil parkes is back on board the label with ‘peil narkes.’ a swinging bassline sets the groundwork as layers of moody synths roll out over punchy hats. since his first release on metroline limited, neil has spread his wings releasing on labels such as madtech, leftroom limited and underground audio.

midnite spares, australian music devotees andrás and instant peterson hold a candle to overlooked avant-pop and electronic works by antipodean artists and outsiders working through the 80s and 90s. through co-presenting weekly radio show strange holiday, the duo slowly upturned their locale for inspiration - archives, country bookstores, private collections and convenience stores, searching for a place to anchor their own identities in the oceans of the island continent. the 10 tracks acknowledge a minor history, passed on via a network of friends, friends of friends, the libraries of radio station 3rrr and more often than not, the artists themselves. renowned mixed media artist maria kozic enters with the mysterious downbeat of trust me, her partner philip brophy responsible for digital and analogue sonic construction. a recurring character in andrás and instant peterson’s investigations, brophy reappears with a score piece from his divisive feature film salt, saliva, sperm and sweat, recorded as ??? repress! toulouse s finest upstarts zendid inaugurate their discobar debut with a glittering model of latter-day micro house. skittish signature beats fluctuate with precision low end whilst carrying agile and developed themes. diversity oozes from each track, consummated by a signature trippy flow and bold melodic cohesion. the duo s respect and deft grasp of the modern colour of the dance floor belies their youth, and earns them a warranted position in the discobar family.

following his uplifting 2015 single holdin on and its techy b-side faces, rony seikaly is back for another release on yoshitoshi that proves this renaissance man is a force to be reckoned with in modern house music. the two tracks on this ep possess deep grooves, but also flex a fair amount of melodic muscle. they liken back to the sound yoshitoshi became well known for in its infancy. the sword centers around some tribal percussion and carefully woven melodic ideas, but the track?s focus is decidedly on low end. a burly, assertive bass gives the mix a driving character suited for late nights. at time it feels like a modern take on progressive house from another era. all of a sudden is more or less an extension of the first track, giving the ep defined consistency. it s a delicately arranged and straightforward house feeler, the meat coming from a multitude of interlaced chords and melodies maneuvering carefully over more tribal percussion and a monstrous kick. the mission here is to inspire awe and wonder in dancers, and seikaly delivers on both accounts.

django djangos debut album came out in january 2012 on because music and was lavished with praise. it was updated psychedelia that beguiles and delights (the guardian), consistently mind-melting and often brilliant (q), bursting with ideas (pitchfork) and gloriously, unpredictably new (mojo). by december it had been shortlisted for the mercury prize and named one of the albums of the year by rolling stone and nme. they became known from their electric live performances full of energy, and went on to play memorable shows at festivals across the globe including as glastonbury and fuji rock.

the second release we do with french artists upwellings aka vincent raude who is professor of modern art at the academy of brest and has been recording music since 1996. his ep comprised two tracks. a-side >dubbin at the strobe< feat. michael zerang shows a nice interaction of drums and sounds developing a profound deep mood. drum parts were recorded in chicago by michael zerang, a real jazz legend who played a lot with peter brötzmann and joe mcphee, hamid drake. the flip side >lighthouse dub< has the aura of an place which is extremely isolated. the sound is at times extremely pulled back and melancholic and holds a sentiment that reminds us a bit of joy divisions >we are the young men<. the track undergoes a transformation beatwise when going more uptempo.
