ltd 100 copies, yan tregger can be considered as one of those composers and instrumentalists who have successfully explored various musical styles during their career, a true experimentalist with a motley repertoire, including pop, soul, jazz, rock, and even disco, he remains a must-have for connoisseurs. from the 1960s to the present day, whether as a composer, arranger or conductor, he is the author of more than 25 albums intended for the library music. the majority of his timeless works, coveted by -diggers- around the world nowadays, set his uncommon productions well apart. with their singular arrangements and rhythms which have the particularity of -sticking- to each musical era, his music continues to delight dj s and other beatmakers. this reissue of catchy, allows the listener to rediscover musical moments from an era full of inventiveness. a spirit of creativity very hard to match again today...

amongst hip-hop fans, boogie down productions first two albums criminal minded (1987) and by all means necessary (1988) both loom very large. and for good reason: they both captured one of the late 1980s most important and influential crews at their highest powers of lyricism and musical invention. that being said, too many people sleep on bdps third lp, ghetto music. released in 1989, when the hip-hop world was truly beginning to explode and reach new heights of sales and exposure around the world, the album is arguably as powerful as the groups first two. as on by all means necessary, in the wake of the tragic death of original founder, producer and dj scott larock, krs-one pushed along mightily on the production side, with help from his extended crew. musically the sound created on albums 2 & 3 was funky, catchy, and continually innovative, giving him the perfect backdrop to build his edutainment syllabus. lyrically there was never a question about krsã power, and on ghetto music he continues to impress, teach and ask important questions. clear cases in point are two of the albumãs singles, you must learn and why is that? but he gets even deeper on lesser-jocked tracks like the anti-police thought-piece who protects us from you (still sadly relevant in 2017), ghetto music and world peace. still as strong and entertaining today as it was almost three decades ago, this new reissue is a perfect way for younger fans to embrace one of the most underrated hip-hop platters of the era.

it’s hard to imagine being at the cutting edge of electronic dance music for over three decades, and never resorting to cliché or tired gimmicks in order to create unique and forward thinking music, but matthew herbert is still channelling original and thought provoking ideas into his projects all these years later. via his accidental record label, he has always excelled at left of centre productions, and through a variety of genre aliases (including doctor rockit, wishmountain and the matthew herbert big band), his imagination has always run wild, resulting in an infectious catalogue of music over the years. “brand new love-, featuring the vocals of rising star, zilla, finds herbert creating a dense and dramatic bass heavy cut. a steppers beat, utilizing herbert’s trademark sampling techniques, it’s a killer cut with sweeping cinematic qualities that sounds head and shoulders ahead of the rest. special request, the jungle heavy arm of paul woolford’s many recording talents, is enlisted to put his breakbeat spin on the original, and turns in an absolutely lethal version, choppy breaks, spinbacks and booming subs come with intent, whilst a sumptuous string arrangement accompanies zilla’s vocal for a truly uplifting spirit. “the peacock-, with its loose beats and opaque stabs, rolls along with its industrial undertones and ravey motif, discordant at times but a truly hypnotizing but in the finest of side b1 traditions. bringing up the rear, “cheekbone” is frenetic and charging micro tribal rave (a new genre classification right there), a glorious medley of percussion, earworm synths and guillotined vocal samples, showing just why matthew herbert is as vital an artist now as he has ever been.

new york, early 90s, the haydays of the new york and jersey clubhouse! with labels such as nugroove, nervous, freeze, strictly rhythm, henry street music taking all the spot light, there is jovonn working on a small but sensational catalogue of music that somehow gets overshadowed by the popular releases on the mentioned labels. the honest productions, jazzy melodies and playful vocals (rooted in gospel) were taking things into a more musical, more spiritual way, lacking gimmicks or dispensable samples. for the real diggers, the true lovers of house music jovonn always was a name to watch, a producer of some of their favorite ny house tracks, tracks that have a raw edge combined with a sincere human touch and pure underground house vibes

french artist based in paris. this prolific musician gets noticed by the od records label that has produced his 2nd ep in 2006 mixing in all his productions influences from the 80s, 90s and 2000s through cheap but stylish synth sounds, melodies that underlie a certain sense of tragic and his own gimmicks, he builds tracks socked in old school house, minimal and electropop that immerse us in a cold, sensitive and personal ambiance.

belgium is back! besides activists like the gimmers, marco bailey and spirit catcher there is a new star rising up in the landscape of electronic music. besides releases on labels like turbo, blue fin and king kong, kolombo has founded his own creative cell called vice versa. >seat back< is the original version produced by the loulou players member himself and >back seat< has been remixed by swedish top producer david ekenbäck who has already made several great productions with stockholm wunderkind john dahlbäck. definitely something to watch out for
