get on down presents an often overlooked crucial reggae release from the 1970s with johnny clarkes rockers time now. the record is a mix of covers and originals, including ethereal versions of the the abyssinians satta massagana and declaration of rights, smash hits on the island just the year before. rockers time now was first issued in 1976, clarke had just been named artist of the year in jamaica for the second year in a row. this is just one of three full lengths he released that year as this was a very prolific period for clarke, in particular from 1974 onward when his output was directed by legendary producer bunny lee. the pairing resulted in a creative energy that resonates to this day. the release was recorded at channel 1 with bunny lee producing, which of course means the band backing the popular jamaican vocalist was the aggrovators, which at the time included robbie shakespeare, earl -chinna- smith, augustus pablo, and aston family man barrett. the release was mixed at king tubbys by osbourne ruddock…aka king tubby. crucial all the way around. now is the time to rediscover a classic of the genre, rockers time now.

man kann sich tim mislocks debütalbum -now is the last best time- auf zwei weisen nähern. rein musikalisch betrachtet handelt es sich um ein von der gitarre dominiertes ambient-werk. mit seinen organisch fließenden klanglandschaften ist es hörbar von größen wie brian eno, stars of the lid oder eluvium beeinflusst, was hier durchaus als kompliment verstanden werden darf. abgerundet werden die sechs tracks durch minimal-einflüsse eines max richters oder jonny greenwoods. jenseits der musik ist es mislock aber auch ein konzeptionelles anliegen, mit seinen kompositionen auf die krankheit alzheimer aufmerksam zu machen. -i wanted to raise awareness of the disease-, so der musiker. mit alzheimer kam er durch die erkrankung seines stiefvaters in kontakt. alzheimer ist eine schwere erkrankung des gehirns und die häufigste form der demenzerkrankung. in deutschland werden jährlich rund 120.000 diagnosen gestellt. tendenz: steigend! für familienmitglieder ist alzheimer eine extreme belastung, und so war es auch bei mislocks mutter, die sich aufopferungsvoll um ihren mann kümmerte. und auch daran dockt -now is the last best time- an: -i also wanted to develop a historical document to thank my mother and tell her that her generosity and kindness have not gone unnoticed.-

played by sebo k, karotte... layo and bushwacka! are equally at home turning out summery housey affairs as they are peak time stormers, and >now is the time / the time was then definitely fits into the latter category. a double header, the loose concept behind the release is to represent the sound of the dancefloor now versus the sound from a few years ago. >now is the time< has its feet placed firmly in 2008 - a crisp, clean techno bassline, topped by hand claps, snatches of breathy female vocal, and full of an irresistible array rattles, whooshes and other indefinable sounds that the duo seem to pull from the depths of their imaginations. it breaks with some simple electronic sounding chords and a stirring martin luther king sample that makes this record so memorable. >the time was then< is based around that same sample, but gives a cheeky nod to a few years back, with a bassline and keys that wouldnt have sounded out of place on their seminal ‘night works’ album. it never goes too far towards nostalgia, though, and either would rip up a late night dancefloor
