african scream contest’ is the third release by the analog africa label. the project initially took off in august 2005 when label owner and vinyl collector samy ben redjeb arrived in cotonou, benin, “without any special expectations, just hoping to lay my hands on few good records - what i found in the process cannot really be described in words-. this first trip was followed by eight more to the region. thirty months and few thousand records later analog africa proudly presents this 14-track compilation. redjeb conducted 16 interviews in various cities in benin and togo with artists, producers and sound engineers to reconstruct the history of the 70s music scene for the 44 pages booklet which also features many rare photographs directly received from the artists. delve into the forgotten raw and psychedelic afro sounds from 70s benin and togo and experience the african scream contest. very, very limited copies in, and this might notcome in anymore.... tip!

john tejada and arian leviste are back on areal after their much celebrated release “reactance“. these guys are working for 25 years together meeting up weekly in the studio to try new things. they say themselves that it is their longest and most special collaboration. they use mainly hardware with an old school mind set that comes more from the early 80s nyc hip hop culture than anything else. early pioneers misusing gear and making the best of their limitations. their newest release “hysteresis“ comes along strongly functional for the club.

following his stunning everything is nothing ep, which kicked off the hubble telescope series for solar one music in 2015, luxus varta (aka emeric di paolo) is back with a new four track ep for french label, intramuros. ‘rosenhan experiment’ (named after david rosenhan’s famous study to determine the validity of psychiatric diagnosis, published in 1973 under the title “on being sane in insane places”) takes us on another electro trip into the human mind with paris the black fu from detroit grand pubahs once again making an appearance, on the track ‘losquato’. the ep opens with the wonderfully shimmering ‘wenn’ before luxus varta makes striking use of his background as a drummer on ‘lizzy’. ‘losquato’ is a playful addition with stripped back rhythms under paris’ story telling that bemoans a man’s work frustrations and resulting mental state (“i gave up therapy about a month ago. my therapist jumped out of a window”), while closer ‘tempsun’ is almost melancholy in its measured minimalism. recommended for lovers of drexciya and dopplereffekt.

this one is for the dreamers - first up is ‘aa’ from newcomer t. margos, it’s your ultimate chance to cop that secret banger that s been blowing up dance-floors from london to budapest this year. it’s a tricky one - taking your mind into the stars with deep spacey pads, but yet working your body with the raw 303 bass and painfully heavy 909 treatment. next on the a-side, swiss wunderkind douala’s turn to fuel that spaceship of your dreams. ‘it’s all in your mind’ soothes your soul with dubby space echoes, tear jerking chord progressions and a dreamy acid bassline.
as we slip into the lucid state of the dream, over on the b-side ray kandinski’s ‘dirty sneakers’ pieces together the kind dimension shifting dream-state that disneyland could barely imagine. when those vocals and pads kick in, combined with the tricky beats everything becomes a wash of surrealism and logic – and it all happens just in time for you to awake into yet another dream, this time deep within your sub-conscious on ‘walk through’ by the mysterious dj lucy with mike l. a nostalgic trip to your most beautiful memories, with uplifting flutes and juno chords.

this monster 1976 lp from nassau s munnings brothers aka beginning of the end is a stone cold classic. fact. well deserving of a place in any record collection! this, their second lp (with 1971s infamous funky nassau preceding it) features the brothers original, fresh sound a mixture of tough funk rhythms, bahamian soul and flourishes of jazz and rock is an extremely well executed and produced body of work. not surprising considering the band were one of the bahamas foremost musical outfits. the brothers musical backgrounds could not have been any more fitting, they cut their teeth playing regularly alongside the likes of nat king cole and count basie at their fathers well known nightclub the cat and the fiddle, what we get on this lp however is not jazz, but lean, melodic soul music! original copies of this seminal lp can change hands for 100 s on the used/second hand market and is a solid constant at the tops of the wants lists of record aficionados. the lp has been illegally reissued numerous times without any care or attention being taken to retain or respect the quality of the amazing music contained within. not so on this occasion, this is a fully legit, sanctioned reissue done in conjunction and with the assistance of miami s tk disco empire. now is the perfect time to revisit the deep, soulful sounds of the munnings brothers endeavours, a truly sublime collection of songs, drenched in sunshine, masterfully produced and performed with pure vitality. a truly classic album. sounding as fresh as it did almost 40 years ago. jump in the water!

henry wu applies jazz infused hip-hop sensibilities to these synth-boogie, and deep house tracks. this was wu’s debut release and set the platform for further massive releases on eglo and rhythm section. on the flip jeen bassa goes in deep with percussive house infused afro-beats laden with jazzy hip hop rhythms. haling from a family of talented musicians (mo kolours and reginald omas mamode iv) he has since gone on to similarly large releases, including last years sterling time waves ep on 22a.

nice price deal !!! ”rundgang” (feedback in swedish) is a track made with feedback and i would call it a.o.t’s very own and personal interpretation of dubstep with ”lyrics” that reflects his wicked sense of humor. ”woot!” on the other hand is an evil excursion in filtered frequency noises and a distorted start/stop rhythm and this is nothing for the faint hearted so brace yourself you are in for a crazy trip verging on techno. the go koyashiki remix takes remixing to another level because go has stripped ”rundgang” to it’s bare essentials and produced a very minimal and slow pulsating track that ends with sublime pianoplaying.

belgian duo raw district return to the crosstown rebels label with addicted, teaming up with the formidable aquarius heaven again for the label, this time remixed by the infamous doc martin and keinemusiks rampa. an ex reggae dancehall and hip hop singer aquarius heaven brings the colors of the caribbean to addicted. raw districts flamboyant percussions grinds the beats into a track that stretches the limitations of electronic music. rampas remix illustrates the breadth of his studio skills, as founder of a production company teile, he builds soaring synths and strumming piano to elevate the emotional aspect to addicted equipping it for the early hours of the night. doc martin has earned the respect of many over his extensive career for his timeless style that bridge many genres. his remix is a driving, dub-tastic, tribal take on the original that has been going down a storm!

based in montreal, ombossa appeared on dvs1 s mistress recordings in 2015. the young and talented french producer is set to have his first ep released in september on fracture, with a remix from silent season s asc. the blinding flare of 61 virgins is an elegant techno trip, an ode that goes deeper and deeper during 8 blissful minutes where you lose your own sense of time. on remix duty, asc skillfully makes it weirder, for a first ep that will please the more daring selectors out there.

jonas friedlich, better known through mistress recordings and carl gari, releases his first solo 12- on molten moods. the versatile 4 track ep starts with the rather straight -bo s breakfast- that begins with a polyrhythmic 303 bass line leading into a catchy garage-ish chorus, kicking in out of a clear sky but fittingly. -bus driver- is a wicked trip, the combination of the long acid build up and a nicely chopped vocal bit is irresistible. a proven, tested (and molten moods certified) club banger, regardless of its rather untypical breakbeat. track number 3 called -praise your name- aces groove through perfectly cut vocal samples and a fancy reference to 90s hip hop and drum n bass aesthetics. the next and last piece on the record is the eponymous -deskjet-, which is inspired by friedlichs conceptual sound art installations using printers. here rather restrained synthie lines are underpinned by a powerful kick and psychedelic tape delay noises. the 12- vinyl is handstamped on both sides. mastered and cut by scape mastering. artwork by paul bernhard.

as the label continues to serve up mouthwatering house and hip hop, d3 elements now dips its toes into more techno leaning territory with a series entitled technologie. the first release comes from american d marc cantu under his lesser known rival alias and features three tracks of hypnotic and widescreen grooves.

raam is back with a solid 4 tracker. the ep starts with ment which is a raw and jacking deep house track. a big rolling bassline, drum machine grooves and melancholy pads create that special house feeling. lipslide is a sublime and discoish house track with dubby chords and bubbly synths that slowly but surely unfolds into a serious groove that really work the floor. on the flip ment get some remix treatment from samo dj (lies, ttt, born free etc) and alexi3d. they transform the original in to gritty and percussive techno trip. the ep ends with ask which is a slow house-not-house track.

after about 30 years as techno/house/synth dj, borft now release joakims debut album. you can hear that he really knows what it takes to get your crowd crazy. this record is full off classic (yet bizzarre) house/acid/disco styled stuff and on the entrance track he got company by wonderful vocalist silvia on a classic trip chicago - helsingborg.... check this def. out!!!
