as proprietors of the will & ink label, yaleesa hall & malin genie have been maintaining a busy and consistent release schedule of top notch techno sounds, largely releasing their own, well received, productions. the duo appeared on hypercolours 10 years compilation in 2016 with the excellent buchan trap, and weve been blessed to secure a full single release with the on-point pair. the mechanical funk of artin swings with plenty of assured groove, the shuffling hats, dense kicks and dubby stabs that ping pong across this fierce production mark this out as a real killer cut. dario & marco zenker, aka the zenker brothers, take time out from their busy ilian tape operations to remix artin into a brutal yet funky techno goliath. congas perpetually roll forward, with frenetic 909 hats and raw and ready stabs in what may well be one of the zenkers finest remixes to date. the essence of funk continues in hall & malins music, with cahen, a great slab of compelling techno that never slips too far into darkness, instead keeping an ever evolving groove and some abstract drone like synthesis to keep the mood buoyant. wrapping up the release is brown, a track that finishes as urgently as it starts, perhaps with a cap doffed to the purpose maker sounds of a certain jeff mills, but broadening the palette to allow some trippy sound architecture and an effective breakdown mid way through. modern day techno supplied by a duo that will most certainly flourish over the coming months, yaleesa hall & malin deliver the goods aplomb on this hypercolour single.

lithuanian alex krell rides the new wave of deep and dark techno straight into the sodai fold, delivering a comprehensive and cohesive four track ep for gardens of god’s respected imprint.
enticingly deep and dubby, title track parallel seduction sets the tone with a rumbling bass and reverbing stabs. optyx picks up the pace, with driving percussion and shimmering synth soundscapes. the subtle distortions of wiemar are next up, conjuring a deep brooding atmosphere. lastly, knocturne is expertly crafted for the dancefloor leaving us fully immersed in a flawless ep.

first track poise i is a deep and dubbed out techno track with deft synths slowly shapeshifting and bringing sombreness to the quickened groove. it’s late night music to zone you out with sparse but rich detailing to keep your mind occupied and it gets ever-busier over the course of thirteen enthralling minutes. then poise ii is a 16 minute masterpiece that is watery and dubby. it has undulating synth currents and increasingly textured snares. building to a peak then pulling back, with occasional freaky vocal sounds and sci-fi motifs, it is a truly cinematic piece that closes out an ambitious ep.

iron curtis is back on hudd traxx with the second installment of his lights ep. much like the first round that dropped earlier in the year, the man like johannes paluka is on sterling form, dealing in the kind of refined yet earthen, deep but punchy house music hes built his name on to date. spectral is the consummate opener, deft piano chords and rock solid drums with additional dubby fx pulsing through the mix. well well well is a sunnier affair aiming for that euphoric terrace moment, while see ya brings a rough swing to the party with a cosy, intimate line in soulful sample licks. l&p finishes the ep off with a warm, acidic bassline and more of that deep diving beatdown business.

recording and touring together on and off for several years now, sonic journeyman dj vadim and californian songwriter katrina blackstone unveil their long awaited full-length album ‘double sided’, released on bbe music. after providing a pair of stellar guest appearances on vadim’s 2014 dubcatcher album, katrina blackstone joined vad on tour and the duo have been steadily laying down tracks ever since. eschewing samples in favour of drum machines, guitars and a dizzying array of synths, vadim’s compositions on ‘double sided’ range from dubby downtempo grooves to upbeat afroboogie business. katrina’s crystal clear vocals, catchy melodies and highly relatable lyrics provide the perfect foil for vadim’s raw productions.

next up on asking for trouble after selling out the album and re-pressing comes a four track remix ep for radioactive man’s luxury sky garden album. life-time friend of radioactive man and control tower partner dexorcist aka simon brown is first up to deliver his take on ‘sonic portal’ on the a side. his style has always been uncompromising and as a music lover and dj he s been a major influence on tenniswood’s style and taste for a long time. dexorcist turns in a detroit influenced banger which goes deep. ben pest then follows with his own take of the same track. a member of funk band pest, purveyor of wonky techno, music tech teacher and hardware enthusiast ben has also released on jerome hill’s don t’ label, i love acid and horror boogie to name a few. his take on ‘sonic portal’ is as genre bending and weighted as you’d expect. over on the b side pain struck stanley dumb remix ‘blast furnace’ - a fast and furious electro track which was released as a digital bonus to the album. they work it into a breakneck speed techno number. taste the amphetamine! completing the package biggabush (aka glyn bush) brings his dub influence to the mix. bush of rockers hi-fi connected with radioactive man during a mastering session asking to do the mix after hearing the record. the results are impressive and provide a welcome tempo and vibe change to the ep with its deep and dubby elements.

time for something a little different from public release.
eye o is the convergence of a few bay area stalwarts—kevin woodruff, formerly of tussle, and jason schwartz - and “deux o & debut” is their first studio-recorded public offering. the five-track, fifty-minute- long lp is a weaving journey through a pastiche of styles that’re all nephews, cousins, brothers, sisters of one another. kraut-rooted motorik drums reconfigure into more complicated math-y patterns, razor-sharp dance-punk guitars stretch out and dissolve into dubby post-rock atmospherics, synth loops you’d more commonly find in house tracks get grafted onto fuzzy psychedelic breakdowns, hard rock licks lock into chunky industrial grooves.
less for dancefloor destruction and more for trippy weekenders, the instrumental record manages to both be a focused, cerebral, conceptual hunk of fat to chew on and a spaced-out, intuitive ride through the cosmos. for use during those off-kilter small hours of the night just as much as it is vision quests and introspective weekends. it’s rare that an outpouring of so much can feel so simple and sublime.

maurizio cascella debuts on love blast records with a 2 track ep, violet capsule. well known for his past productions on elettronica romana together with such names as giorgio gigli, dino sabatini and donato dozzy he s a founder of the roman techno scene. in his new release cascella propose his concept of techno: catchy, dubby and groovy with a mental hypnotic touch, developed in long efforts, taking you to the darkest side of the dancefloor.

leipzig’s qy join r.a.n.d. muzik recordings with two deep and classy cuts pressed on 10 inch record with full cover artwork. a1 a club ready, bass heavy stomper with plenty of percussion work that always manages to maintain it’s composure. b2 is a deep and warm and dubby with plenty of swing to keep you moving.

delsin records inertia series is back with a powerful four tracker from yan cook. the producer from ukraine has also released delsin s main label and associated ann aimee, as well as planet rhythm and cooked. he makes straight up techno that arrests your attention and does just that again here. toucan is first and is a spangled, underwater techno track with gurgling lines wrapping round shuffling percussion and insistent drums. it s one to get into your head, while puffin is more physical, with more warped synths and paddy drums woven together into a fluid, rippling groove that never lets up. the drums on dialogue are deep and land with real resonance while dubby chords rattling out to the horizon. last of all flamingo is the most manic of the lot, with hi speed synths and booming drums all coming together to make for powerful, sub shaking and room filling techno madness.

french producer okain has long been entrenched in the minimal house movement, from time spent on four:twenty and tsuba through to memoria, no fit state and now shoring up on dogmatik. babylon is a sharply focused workout with playful organ trills darting in and out of the mix, while radio therapy gets into a light-headed, bubbly state of mind thanks to some shimmering synth work. permeable drops a little dubby magic on the track and r4r5r6 finishes the ep off with a more muscular groover for when you need to keep the energy up on the dancefloor.

dutch producer sota is the latest to be snapped up by ornate music, presenting his second ever release having first come to light with his own talaman label earlier in the year. subsonica rides on a tough house groove, keeping the elements as spartan as possible while heading straight into the deep end of the night. inverse is a skippier affair that deals with heavily processed synth flares and a deadly swinging groove, and then chatka finishes the ep off with a dreamy cut peppered with delay processing for the quintessential dubby trip through refined 4/4 dance music.

international reggae star alborosie returns with the dub version of his celebrated “freedom & fyah” album from last year titled “freedom in dub”. the distinctive production of these ten newly recorded dub mixes underscore alborosie’s skill and credibility as a master of dub. all tracks are produced and (mostly) played by alborosie and recorded at his shengen studios in kingston, jamaica.

route 8 and s olbricht are both highly regarded artists in their own right, but less light has been shed on their collaborative endeavours as ste pwri tmod. largely lurking around the go! finger label, this second instalment of selected works is taken from the album of the same name, giving a proper vinyl outing to some of the stunning tracks previously confined to cassette. -when i pictured myself- is a wonderfully laid back jam peppered with personality at every juncture, while -horriflowers- takes a more uneasy trip into machine techno led by a growling synth. things cool off considerably on the dubby -nirrimi- and then -strobes- rounds the record off with a brooding, wavey cut for dark, romantic dancers to lose themselves in.

fernando makes his debut iib release with the 3 track shining ep. side a is the home of the truly epic title track shining. an 11 min super mellow hypnotic trip. driven by rolling bongos and bassline some funky guitar and delay soaked effects. a real gem. the b side fernando pitches up the tempo. horizonte rojo is a cruising deep balearic house groove with the same dubby feel as shining. the final track is karmic a soulful disco tinged after hours house groove. island music for day and night. dive in.

after the first release in june 2016 and #002 following in early 2017, the berlin- based imprint through these eyes is ready to announce the next release. this time it features two heavy jungle tracks by austrian based artist sun people. on the name giving a-side of his through these eyes release sun people uses an iconic vocal sample, adds a gut-wrenching 95 style bass-line and tops it all off with some of the finest razor sharp percussions in the genre to deliver one of the most stomping tunes you ll hear this summer. nu gun on the flipside gets a lot more dubby with it s perfect jungle beat edits and moody chord stabs - all that laid out over a well known vocal sample. it can easily be considered a prime example of sun people s signature sound which is heavily rooted in dub, jungle and juke/footwork.
