ltd 2020 repress !! tj hertzs first original release since 2014s critically acclaimed flatland lp comes in the form of objekt #4, a continuation of his club-focused white label series and a tribute to the sadly now defunct basement q, a formative and beloved haunt in berlin’s schöneberg district which quietly but profoundly shaped the musical identities of hertz and several of his contemporaries until its final closure in 2012.
the two tracks on objekt #4 pay tribute to two of the many musical facets of basement q in its later years. a-side “needle and thread” aims to condense several hours of a thursday night in the basement into 9 minutes and 26 seconds, embellishing a hypnotic rolling techno backbone with hyper-detailed atmospherics, enchanting melodies and tight, strident breakbeats. b-side “theme from q” is hertz’s reinterpretation of a basement q anthem, owner and founder dj bogdan’s own “love inna basement (morning dub)”, which never saw an official release despite providing the soundtrack to over 20 years of late morning love-ins in the cellar underneath the sattler & söhne glue factory. together, the two tracks offer an incomplete but nonetheless seductive illustration of one of the most idiosyncratic and overlooked clubs in berlin’s recent history.

ltd 2020 repress - 250 copies only - chi started in the late punk years in the early eighties. a time of change and mind-blowing albums. we started doing sound experiments in an old farm in moordrecht (thanks to jan van rhee and kees van der veer). in the summer, all the doors and windows were open, birds flew in and out. in the distance we saw the highway to rotterdam. in the winter we sat close together, no heating, only blankets, candles and brandy.

slackk first came to the attention of most with an ep of roughneck uk house on numbers, before a series of more emotive, melody-driven records on local action and unknown to the unknown saw him emerge as one of the most unique and influential artists working in the peripheries of grime - taking the genre’s hallmarks and audio tattoos but placing them in a context that owed as much to eastern mood pieces and the complex melodies of classic jazz records, hinting at other key influences on slackks music. his debut album palm tree fire was a particular success: resident advisor calling it a beautiful glimpse into the mind of an under-appreciated producer.

it’s been three rough years since mirrors for psychic warfare sprang into existence with their startling self titled debut, but don’t think for a second that the time was spent idle, this unit (comprised of neurosis’ scott kelly and producer sanford parker) constructed an even more unnerving and destructive record with “i see what i became,” i know, hard to believe. over the course of these eight bile-rich pieces a sonic abattoir is erected, exploited, and razed. turbulence rises and churns giving way to rhythmic machinations, lights flicker, a grand mal/guignol seizure besets a frog-headed snitch, blood collects in a stainless steel gutter. claustrophobic sudor that evokes all you held dear from skinny puppy, foetus, godflesh, bath tub tina, and wondering where the fuck you will sleep, provided you ever do. there’s nothing fun here, nothing but the cold of an autopsy followed by the heat of a crematorium. a sliver of galvanized bone flies from a circular saw into the toothless maw of a streetwalking kali yuga. good or bad, i’m not sure what we did to deserve this.

the remarkable second album, “indigo”, from singer and pianist kandace springs is a 13-track lp of originals and choice covers that showcases the full breadth of kandace’s artistry from smoldering r&b (“piece of me”) to gorgeous jazz ballads (“unsophisticated” featuring roy hargrove) to the pop songcraft of “breakdown” and “don’t need the real thing,” the album’s lead single which is out today. all but two tracks are produced by drummer/producer karriem riggins (common, erykah badu) with additional production by jamie hartman (rag n bone man), jimmy hogarth (amy winehouse, corinne bailey rae), jimmy harry (madonna, p!nk) and evan rogers and carl sturken (rihanna).
