jun kamoda has been a solid contributor to japan’s electronic music scene for quite some time. producing under his illreme moniker for over 15 years & also as member of hip hop trio baleine 3000. he is also a cartoon illustrator for japanese independent magazine ‘usca’.
2016 saw him release ‘the clay ep’ (with *that* physical graffiti tune) on new york’s seminal imprint mister saturday night as well as a track for a dirt crew recordings compilation. having recently remixed clap! clap!’s ‘hope’, jun kamoda’s debut for black acre is set for release in june.
infectious licks and raw drums come together to form ‘blind disco’, an animated production that blends a cacophony of samples into a raucous party jam. ‘ramen funk’ is a moodier cut by comparison, featuring a medley of percussive elements, vibrant guitar melodies and a seedy bassline, until ‘savanna on the palm’ chops up and loops a wailing vocal sample before leading into echoing chords and a twisted groove in a mesmerising conclusion.

baker’s dozen heads back to the east coast where veteran producer marco polo brings a welcomed boom bap flavor to the series. new york city is the birthplace of fat beats (and as many would say, hip-hop in general) and current nyc resident marco polo is true to form in representing our roots. as always, every volume of bdz features one artist and twelve tracks (with limited random copies including the baker’s dozen bonus track on a flexidisc) and comes equipped with a 5x7” postcard insert that features a photo of the artist’s workspace along with the equipment used in their music making process. a personal narrative of how they got into beat making in the first place is featured on the back of the jacket. visually cohesive and packaged with the utmost attention to detail, baker’s dozen is a series that speaks up for artists whose craft renders voices superfluous, and whose instrumentals alone suffice to make a statement.

ne’astra music group now presents a new compilation of rare dilla material: vol. 0. ten tracks featuring the classic slum village lineup of dilla on vocals and production, with baatin & t3 also on the mic, collected by modern sv member young rj from unreleased material and demos recorded between 1994 and 1997. the knowledgable hip-hop head may recognize key tracks from the circulated ephcy sessions, while others have never seen the light of day. a piece of hip-hop history that would have otherwise wallowed in obscurity, until now.

after one year of high energy industrial and punk-leaning music, kess kill presents something slightly more contemplative: the vinyl debut of the swedish act grand mal x. the solna based duo started in 2010 and was first known from the cassette scene, which was also where we stumbled across their work. drawing from a long and wide palette of influences — from osho dynamic meditation and eu highways, to artists like suicide, coil and rune lindblad — their music breathes an ethereal yet catchy air, a difficult line to tread. the fact that one of the members is active at the legendary experimental ems studios in stockholm might be the reason for the unusual amount of depth and maturity, steering the music sternly away from the plainly accessible. opener ‘late night call’ is a brooding and growling number perfect for setting the mood in any room or occasion needing an infusion of sweaty sexual energy. ‘speed of light’, the record’s most up-tempo song, leans towards both synth pop and electro-punk. on the flip ‘the trip’ does the exact opposite of the opener, winding things down both emotionally and energy wise, replacing sex appeal with lithium-lined angst, not unlike alan wilder at his deepest. ending the ep is ‘rabbit’, an unadulterated trip down a similarly named hole for those who feel like falling. summed up it’s the most abstract but surprisingly catchy kess kill release to date, an essential beacon in grasping the label’s concept.

the second installment for the label comes from sheffield based artist tommy vicari jnr. the ep starts with always be here, track which gives the release the name and sets up the mood with an uplifting vibe. rudow explores more esoteric realms, bringing you into deeper states of mind. ramshackles ventures into more dub influenced territory, expansive chords and a twisted beat make it a monster in big sound systems. untoucome closes the ep with a heavy bassline, sprinkled with some tripped out sounds making it perfect for a closing trip.

new years deal - a1 - luc marianni - six synthetic suites (anno stamm remix) berlin producer anstam’s remix of six synthetic suites is quite a trip. the producer has crafted a dubbed-out version, almost sub aquatic in its sound design, structured around a murky but driving techno beat on which he layers marianni’s sounds. exotic instruments, unusual timbres, daring melodies and even slapped bass: the contrast between these sounds and stamm’s grayscale groove is powerful. a2 vril - synthetic suite giegling artist vril uses samples from marianni’s six synthetic suites released in 1986 to produce this lovely slab of dub techno. carefully crafted, this track is all about soft edges, with a kind of blurry and hazy vibe that permeates it. a sense of motion is conveyed by the sparse but efficient rhythmic section, with chords and melodic elements giving the impression of floating. with much more contrast and complexity than it might seem at first listen, this is beyond your usual dub techno cut. b1 luc marianni - six synthetic suites (margaret dygas remix) also based in berlin, margaret dygas’ own remix of six synthetic suites is a deconstructed affair, built around a half step groove, ready to be used creatively in dj sets. somewhere between an ambient excursion and a more rhythmic jam, the producer uses a sparse palette of hallucinogenic, dizzying sounds with a dash of eerie darkness that gives this version a melancholic, unsettling nature. words by edouard isar.

paul blackford returns to cpu this time donning a 7inch downtempo tip. light years vinyl takes 2 of the highlights from the accompanying lp, all of which demonstrate his versatility in expressing his hip hop and funk influences from an electronic music perspective. on first pass you might think you are listening to nightmares on wax, but without the heavy sampling as blackford favours creating his sounds from scratch. comparisons to photeks hidden camera can be made in terms of atmosphere but keeping things within a slower trip hop framework. light years is for chilling out, but theres a strong temptation to mix hip-hop vocals over the top due to the lps solid instrumental foundations.

reda dare comes back with his own brand new imprint, reda dare records. for this ep, he decided to press three of his smoothest tunes. the wax’s a-side is the one and only ‘albadare’, representing his classic strict groovy mindset and bouncy harmonies. then comes ‘orgy of the dead’ an old school hip-hop inspired house track, with a heavy bassline and a festive rhythm. finally, the vinyl ends with ‘x’ a spookier vibe that’s perfect to set the dance floor back on track. this limited issue is a collection of reda dare’s finest over the years, don’t miss out ,)

sampling as an art is a concept: taking samples away from their origins forward something new, emotional or even funny. -le grand détrounement- was a movie made in the 90 s by great actors of french media -canal+-. it took several 50>80 s movies with classical american actors, cutting them and redubbing to make a big funny story. s3a records is delighted to welcome a new french artist, who wanted to make the same on his music with this project. s3a rec is very excited to present 6 tracks ep between minimal sampled house music and dirty hip hop!

fredfades is a norwegian producer specialising in the uncut raw hip hop. here’s his debut solo album, “warmth”. (vinyl includes download code) in 2013 he dropped a classic with ivan ave called breathe on kingunderground records. warmth is his debut solo album following a long line of singles, collaborative albums, cassettes and load of independently released projects. the album has 16 tracks made from jazz, soul and boogie samples with gritty drums and a dash of synth stabs, mixed by fred and mastered at strype audio in oslo by christian obermayer. the title track warmth is the last track on the album and was sampled from a live recording off one of fred’s favourite jazz records that is always on heavy rotation at the crib. guests at the table include med (stones throw), mndsgn (stones throw), ivan ave, (jakarta), moruf, koreatown oddity (stones throw), chester watson and more.

asc made his first appearance last year on fracture, remixing the newcomer ombossa. the san diego based electronic music producer comes back on the french label in 2017 with two fresh tracks that show him going further into his exploration of techno soundscapes. the canadian duo orphx doesn t need to be presented. they have been responsible for some of the most interesting techno records in recent years. in their hands, dissolve becomes a frantic and out-there trip of almost 10 minutes

soul jazz records’ new boombox 2 is a new selection of early rap music from the period 1979-83, with barely a household name in sight. featured here are some the earliest hip-hop records that came out of new york city following the enormous commercial success of the first ever rap record, ‘rapper’s delight’ by the sugarhill gang, in september 1979. artists and producers alike tried to jump aboard the new commercial possibilities of hip-hop. by the end of the year there were 30 hip-hop singles, all released by independent new york labels. the following year there were over 100 more, and so on.

passafire s longshot, the full-length follow up to vines (2013) and the interval ep (2015), finds the band continuing to stretch in new musical directions, while still maintaining a strong core of reggae elements. some songs tread into 90s grunge, hip hop and even current pop, but for hardcore passafire fans, this genre-bending style will come as no surprise for a band that has always pushed itself through experimentation, with a foundation of hummable hooks and vicious musicianship. a guest spot by rapper mr. lif also contributes a new angle on the song -blow. vines debuted at 1 on billboard record chart.

shaddock 09 – people like me – comes courtesy of boost riders, alias of a well known hip hop producer from madrid. they deliver a classy and catchy latin freestyle tune featuring a prominent voice sample. -people like me- has been lying in our drawer for some time, it is a personal favourite and this track is the reason why shaddock records was founded. finally the time for its release is here – backed on the b-side by a mind-blowing and much darker electro/industrial remix by dj stingray.

2017 re:issue , keys of life continues with its series of releases paying tribute to the sound of acid house... tin man a.k.a. johannes auvinen is of finnish descent, having lived all his life in los angeles. tin man says his tracks relate to the history and mood of acid house, calling them <just simple dance songs, with an emphasis on the bassline slowly changing>

picking up right where ep 1 left off, ep 2 kicks things off with a bang. first up is catz n dogz and yotam avnis for blakkat a high pace burner ideally suited for dance floors from panorama bar to under the leds of watergate and every club in-between. the duo return with the bright version of afterglow for the second cut on ep 2 and aptly titled, it pushes an intense, glitter filled ride to its limits. embarking onto the b-side, o.a. peas from heavy hitter eats everything & lord leopard take a trip down memory lane with a heavily sample based feel good tune that will absolutely demolish dance floors worldwide. rounding out the ep is a final collaboration between catz n dogz and reno wurzbacher with ma people and its by far the smoothest and most laid back tune of the bundle, but never does it let you rest as a mesmerizing groove and lush atmospherics tell a deep, complex tale of late nights and early mornings.

fresh off the dusty spools of the sony tc-186 @ discrete tapes hq, toronto, comes a blinding 8-track va for the label’s fourth release. ranging from deep, dubbed out meditations to raging techno trips this diverse v/a exposes the subterranean connections between our disparate sonic landscapes. tracks include a dub-technoid hip-hop monster from label head thought project, raging acidic electro from dj rare and deep sonic mirroring from montreal-based producer nitecc.

o celebrate the 25th anniversary of ugkãs first album, get on down goes the extra mile, presenting it for the first time ever on vinyl. and 2-lp clear vinyl at that, giving the strutting, funky grooves the chance to really stretch out on your system. back in 1992, southern hip-hop was still proving to the world that it could sustain a fan base that was chiefly raised on rap from new york and la. the geto boys and 2 live crew had made strong cases by the earliest 90s, and pimp c and bun b were ready to make their own. most of the trunk-bumping bass comes from drum programs and basic sampling on these tunes in later years they would build their sound into something even fuller and deeper. self-produced with additional work from houston locals bernie bismark and shetoro henderson, the tracks here are minimal, slow and menacing, which matched their lyrical approach quite nicely. you can hear the beginnings of the groups true greatness in these early lyrical workouts ¹ several taken from the regional cassette-only ep the southern way that got them signed to jive with tales of street hustles, relationships and self-reliance in a world stacked against them. they may have been done early-on, but that doesnt mean they arent crucial to ugks legacy cases in point being the three singles: something good, a charismatic update to bill withers use me up, and pocket full of stones (the latter featured on the menace ii society soundtrack). beyond the singles, deeper cuts like iãm so bad, feels like iãm the one whos doin dope and cramping my style made it clear to the world that this crew had the attitude and charisma to make even bigger waves in the years to come.

selected advent deal, henrik bergqvist is back on aniara after releases on boss musik and trouble in paradise with some spaced-out house bangers and a revitalizing groove excursion on the flip. have a nice trip!

nacho marco lands on feline for this fourth release. acid bay is an acid trip through different electronic landscapes. coyu, ferenc and mm(nacho marco & angel molina) give their own re-interpretations from this superlative track.

almost 10 years have passed since onra arrived with the charmingly eccentric chinoiseries lp. 32 hip-hop beats formed the sample-based project - dusty chinese vinyl hissing and crackling throughout – resulting in an intriguing and spontaneous mix of the producers interest in exploring a newly-discovered style of music with his love for classic hip-hop production.
using the style of analogue mpc production combined with the somewhat restrictive record sampling of strictly chinese music records, he has been able to be creative over three volumes, an amount of 100 instrumentals, despite the challenge of finding more obviously standout samples in chinese music.
the chinoiseries projects are the type of albums that invites the listener to play it from beginning to end, in order to really enjoy the trip and appreciate the variety of rhythms and textures spread over those 32 short instrumentals. in that way, “pt.3” is no different to its predecessors, but the originality of the samples, the curious harmonies and the odd-drum patterns still makes the album sounds as fresh as the first one.
onra finishes this epic trilogy with class as a result of extended record digging across the far east and the producer s own development over the preceding 10 years.
as a producer who has released records inspired by 80’s funk, 90’s hip-hop and r’n’b, electronic and even a spiritual jazz project, “pt. 3” brings this stylised set to a close.

the patron saints of altered states known as john frum welcome in the golden age of musical enlightenment with a stirring in the noos. nearly 6 years in the making, john frum’s unorthodox debut maneuvers through 40 minutes of darkly psychedelic and meticulously crafted death metal, acting as a medium for malefic musings, the backdrop of a bad trip. john frum borrows its name from a relatively isolated group of natives in the south pacific islands, known as a cargo cult, whose encounter with the outside world led to an awakening of new beliefs and lifestyles. the mysterious john frum is the manifestation of four musical minds coalescing in a collective consciousness developed from time spent playing with the dillinger escape plan, the faceless, john zorn, cleric and many more elite projects. a stirring in the noos is a dismal distillation of oneric transmission and a totem to modern primitivism in heavy music.
