pig & dans elevate label is going from strength to strength in 2014 with a series of stunning releases. if you are familiar with pig&dans work, then you know that they produce and play music that is far from linear. they are always looking to push the envelope with genre-bending music and a devotion to creating something special that gets right under your skin and elevates the spirit. pig&dans attention to detail is a mark of their creative excellence. having created a trio of dynamic techno grooves, they give each track its own distinctive identity. whether they do twitchy (sandstorm), full-scale onslaught (power), or transcendent beauty (there is no turning back), they always do it with unrivalled style and panache. it would be hard to find another duo whose creative juices flow so freely right now. what they have is a very special meeting of minds that is being cherished and developed to ever-greater heights as the years tick by, leaving the future of techno in very safe hands indeed.

last year moscow records set up sub-label moss co and each release so far has introduced a new set of artists. for this third release it is nu zau, aka stefan gabriel zamfir and loopdeville, aka d zlatinov. nu zau debuted on fear of flying in 2012 and his 2013 was prolific with seven releases added to his name. he provides an 11-minute drum track, *cumse cuvine*, that is filled with kooky and super minimal, squeaks, tweets and vocal samples, a fine production. loopdevilles kick drum on *piance* in comparison to zaus a-side is standout, and here he provides a cold and moody track designed for those deeper moments of the night. it is the london-based producers third release after debuting in 2013 with two 12 inches, one of which, phantasmagoria, inaugurated new label delooped.

a twenty year break away from making music is almost unheard of especially within electronic music circles, but that is where antenna happy finds himself with pinto. clocking in at 9.09 pinto draws from psychedelia and techno set straight for the sun. this kaleidoscopic sonic excursion has all the makings of a cult classic, and heads up the debut 12- release on newly founded imprint reinhardt records. taking lead on the b-side an entirely different affair in the shape of fallen. this is benchmark electronic music, as arpeggiators take flight mirrored against hypnotic acid bass, for a journey into the outer house territories. closing the ep, spark holds the reigns. conceived within the same stretch as pinto, however it wasn t until some months later that spark took on its full form. emotive modular synths lay the groundwork, connecting the dots between low-slung techno and house music, culminating in a track that sits in neither genre camp. spark will appear on the digital release only. the ep title track takes its name and inspiration from paintings by antenna happy s three-year-old daughter, whose birth inspired him to return to making music. close-ups of these paintings can be seen in the artwork for the release.

a sublime three tracker that continues endless short history of releasing music that encapsulates an otherworldly beauty. the title track is a smooth deep dancefloor cut driven by a catchy chord pattern and crisp beats, while >vabene< encapsulates a rare exquisiteness with its chugging bassline and evocative melodic keys and already has a special place in clubbers’ hearts and minds after it was the opening track of lucas lauded set at sunday debauchery in nyc in june – a set he rates at the finest of the year so far. the ep is rounded out with the outstanding >la valse de la pertinence< that’s led by a call-and-response dual bass and key melody that drives the cut, making it simultaneously groove-ridden and sublime and spacey.

with focus battling between murderous bass and bewildering soundscapes throughout the ep, the choice of three energies and tones makes kalawila s debut a surely applicable dance floor tool for techno and house devotees alike. stockholm/berlin-based kalawila debuts on his own imprint, mountain explosion device, with an ep made for warehouses. slagsmal utbröt pa mount everest ep’ is an ensemble of three dark house tracks on the verge of techno, each sonically similar and yet delicately versatile in function. slagsmål utbröt på mount everest is a forward-leaning and fast paced roller with long build-up. meanwhile khajuraho is steadily reclined on cooler percussion and kindred warehouse bass-sounds. pluto far sparken then shifts focus slightly to the peripheries in a deeper passage of harmonics and reverberations.

following his lotus s7ven album with hector moralez, chris carrier delivers his first full length since 2010 s gosse de paris double-pack. a staple for the french robsoul label, carrier now finds himself in holland writing lps for slapfunk records, a label launched in 2012 that s so far released music from a host of emerging house heads. carrier, now slapfunk s marquee artist, delivers a full listen of smooth and sweet deep house with a slight touch of abstract perlon-isms and creative, almost industrial, sound designs - and a release that ll put slapfunk on the map at that.

five highly absorbed months of compiling later and, at last, we have the finest, truest definition of modern soul yet - soul love 2014. no effort has been spared in bringing this album together, all corners of the globe scoured over much of last year for 25 contemporary cuts of exquisite groove, musicianship and emotion.

airplay from steve barker (the wire) on bbc radio and support from tomas rubeck (eshu) among others. kicking off the new fifth interval label, san francisco based dub techno producer federsen heads up the premier release. the title track is a hazy dub techno trip filled with washes of tape delayed chords and crisp snares while the b1 track - 50hz is a far more broken affair, 140 bpm gear comparable to the likes of deadbeat and strategy. for the final track, isodyne (one half of forward strategy group) shakes up 50 hz, slowing it down to an incredibly weighty 115 bpm, finalising an excellent release with something for discerning djs of all tastes.

another banger from love fever protege, and wunderkid laurence blake aka citizen. with a truly astounding trajectory thus far we revisit the start with the original and best track he s produced so far. re-mastered, re-imagined and wholly smashed out the park with the aptly named warehouse dub. this is straight up, unadulterated dance-floor gold from citizen as love fever up the pace with a high quality and hectic release schedule and party pressure in 2014.

yawn zen is la-based hip-hop producer ringgo anchetas debut album for stones throw. mndsgns psychedelic beats have already won him fans such as danny brown, who snapped him up to produce a track the lead track for his classic drug referencesrelease and bbc radio 1s benji b. dazed & confused described him as *one of the west coasts finest beat-smiths… each track is a patchwork of lush electronic samples blended together to create warm, sun-drenched little charmers.* on yawn zen, his debut for stones throw, mndsgn has carved himself an unusually calm-sounding place in the los angeles beat scene. the influence of labelmates madlib and j dilla on this on this collection of laid-back beats is never far off, but yawn zen has a psychedelic, jazzy flavour that equally recalls the likes of flying lotus, gonjasufi and samiyam. the vinyl lp includes a download code.

bright sounds present their third release, from paris-based producer shlømo - owner of kindred spirit label taapion. having made a big impression in late-2013 with taapion s debut release the harvest ep (featuring conforce and stephen brown remixes), shlømo now presents his second full solo ep: rechaïm explores similar sonic textures to those found on taapion and bright sounds releases so far - a richly layered and dense world of dub techno atmospherics with dancefloor versatility. the four tracks all allow for different aspects of shlømo s exemplary production skill to shine through, marking the producer alongside bright sounds owner and fellow parisian as producers and a&r talents to keep close watch of.

nathan fake and wesley matsell are both producers best known for their releases on border community - nathan fake has been putting out psychedelic permutations on dance music since 2003 for the label, while matsell recently released the blissful total order of being ep for them earlier in 2014. cambria instruments is a new label venture from the pair, and for the first release they have teamed up for a split 12- of kaleidoscopic electronic sounds. nathan fake s contribution black drift starts things off, an initially inauspicious tripping beat gathering momentum and morphing into a far-out piece of fuzzy house underpinned by sunken low-end rumbles. it s the kind of brilliantly wide-eyed track we have come to expect from the producer. over on the flip, wesley matsell s bismuth is a more shadowy, moody affair, a tight techno rhythm holding things together while synths spin wildly. a highly expressive, lysergic trip and one of his finest productions to date. all in all, you couldn t hope for a stronger start from a new label.

usually found in partnership with blocks on their own narratives imprint, here we find escher flying solo with two beautifully contrasting compositions. deep architecture has already been causing a big stir online due to its wild time signature and off-beat percussive patterns. physically its drum & bass, but mentally its most definitely techno as it pummels with loopy drum insistency. spirit bounce, meanwhile, is a stark and breezy stepper that oozes space and shimmers with emotive synths. its a simple but soulful synthesis many have attempted over the year but only few have mastered... klute, marcus intalex and now escher, too. the return of 31 has been one of d&bs best stories so far this year.

it s been a busy 2014 so far for label head dubfire. whilst nothing unusual for the persian-born producer, with the revival of deep dish (alongside sharam), the release of their new single quincy, the continuation of the sci+tec radio show, the release of his much vaunted remix of come featuring asia argento and his relentless global touring schedule, it would be a surprise to find even a slither of studio time for original dubfire productions.

up next on craig bratleys magic feet label is the vanity ep. this release is aimed at the vinyl completist and features four remixes which have so far been unreleased or received a digital release. the ep contains three remixes by craig, catalepsis *quartz giaponese*, the souls *tonight* and four walls *no use* as well as the sought after sean johnston remix of *obsession*.

in the ever-expanding universe of deep house, julius steinhoff is far from being a stranger. half of the dynamic duo smallpeople, founder and one of the steersmen behind hamburgs smallville empire (record store/ label/ party curator around the globe) as well as a producer and dj in his own right, steinhoff is closely associated with a group of like-minded people that unite fresh ideas and individualism with a certain consciousness of tradition.

luckyme are very proud to present the ‘rosario ep from s-type.s-types rise started in spring 2012. emerging, gleaming and show-stopping from rustie’s seminal bbc essential mix was a track called ‘billboard’ from a new producer that was part of the luckyme family as far back as his teenage years. the track had soundcloud and blog commentators looking around for the hugest most galactic superlatives for this ‘superhero’ music. as skyscraping as the biggest us hip hop instrumentals but born of the ferment of glasgow’s world-wowing club world, it made it into end of year ‘best of’ polls as well as the dj sets of rustie, tnght,and benji b. s-type aka 27 yo scot bobby perman started getting recognised down the shops glasgow. he was catapulted onto a 30 + date us tour and found himself in the studio with kindred spirits araabmuzik and baauer. there were rumours of national electronic goods adverts in south korea and s-type tracks in the running for inclusion on drakes nothing was the same album. on 19th sept 2013, the buzz started all over again as luckyme family member Éclair fifi dropped a new s-type tune ‘rosario’ on her bbc radio 1 in new djs we trust show. now luckyme can announce the wait is over. lm017 aka s-type’s ‘rosario’ ep is coming out on 16/6/2014. ‘rosario’ sets the scene with a 2 min intro called ‘outside (inside)’, featuring rustie and yc the cynic, a rapper from hunts pont, the bronx that xxl called ‘one of the most promising artists in recent years’, the complex wordplay sounding perfect over bobby’s wide screen arrangement. ‘franco’ is a fierce club banger with plenty of his signature chord work. ‘lost girls’ stunts and fizzes in the way only an s-type track can. for the outro ‘inside (outro)’, bobby’s sweeping instrumental sets the scene for long island mc (and one time flipmode squad member) roc marciano, who sharply describes the beat as ‘historic’. s-type addicts, he’s back. early dj support from hudmo, kode 9, baauer, joker, rl grime and jackmaster.
